Micah Bloom’s Codex examines the fate of books in the aftermath of the 2011 Minot flood. Researchers in many disciplines have turned to Google Street View to replace pedestrian- or carbased in-person observation of streetscapes. It is most prevalent within the research literature on the relationship between neighborhood environments and public health but has been used as diverse as disaster recovery, ecology and wildlife habitat, and urban design. Evaluations of the tool have found that the results of GSV-based observation are similar to the results from in-person observation although the similarity depends on the type of characteristic being observed. In September 2016, Nicole Ludwig led a group of her neighbors in Germany to assist newly-arrived Syrian and Afghani refugees. The volunteers collected clothing and toys, organized activities and field trips for the refugee children, and taught them German. Later, the volunteers offered homework support and led library reading groups. For the adult refugees, the volunteers provided cultural assimilation instruction and cooking classes. Theses and Dissertations

I photograph objects and sites that exhibit translucent and reflective surface properties. These objects and scenes project multiplicities and degrees of transparency and opacity that suggest depth, movement and passing time. I think of these objects and sites as artifacts found in situ. My photographs are affirmations of a constructed, found and realized world that is often unseen or unrecognized. These images are a personal iconography, symbols of a process of awareness and identity that involves combining childhood memories of play and looking with intent as necessary cognitive and emotional processes.

The Goose

Desert Pool {If every desert was once a sea} is a site-specific art project by Canadian artist Karen Miranda Abel completed in 2016 while artist-in-residence at Joya: arte + ecología, an arts-led research centre situated in an alpine desert within a national park in southern Spain. The elemental installation represents an envisioning of the ancient sea that occupied the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park millions of years before the current desert ecology, a time when its highest mountain peaks may have been islands.

This thesis explores the ways in which photographs by Ralph Eugene Meatyard provoke the uncanny—or Das unheimlich as Freud originally wrote in 1919—by breaking from conventions of mid-twentieth century family photography often utilized to establish and maintain genealogical unity. Meatyard’s photographs of his family and friends are accentuated by blurring techniques, prolonged exposures, and the incorporation of dime-store masks, and as a result depict moments when reality is disrupted by the return of repressed material from childhood. For a multitude of reasons, Meatyard’s photographs elicit comparisons to Surrealist photography as well as certain American modernists who also explored the notion …

This thesis is in support of the exhibition entitled ES-SEN-TIAL on display in Tipton Gallery located in Downtown Johnson City from February 27, 2017 to March 10, 2017.

The exhibition is a presentation in fiber medium of the human impact on the landscape, specifically using the extractive industry of coal mining as example. This is accomplished through the use of digital imagery printed on textiles, hand and machine embroidery, and surface design techniques of dyeing and layering. The Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin, Texas is the only forestry museum in the state. It preserves artifacts and educates visitors about Texas’ forest industry history. The museum has a Sawmill Town History Wing that is outdated and in need of a refreshing exhibit design based on current best practices. Using a previous museum audit as a guide, the new exhibit will have better flow, panel aesthetics, content, and interactive elements. By creating a new exhibit, the museum is better able to educate and entertain the visitors about Texas’ forest industry history.

This dissertation accompanies compilation of my thesis work, consisting of a succession of digital photographs printed on canvas. Within the dissertation, I summarize the theoretical, historical, and applicable influences that have affected the production of my images. I contend that the digital photographic process is the dominant component in my works, and describe how it has developed and evolved in a contemplative approach throughout the growth of my thesis work. Examining Participation Among Persons With Spinal Cord Injuries And Disorders Using Photovoice, Salva Balbale, Keshonna Lones, Jennifer N. Hill, Sherri L. Lavela Phd, Mph, Mba

The Qualitative Report

Participation is a significant rehabilitation outcome for individuals with spinal cord injury and/or disorder (SCI/D), yet few qualitative studies have described the social aspect of disability and community participation. We used the photovoice methodology to explore perceptions and experiences related to participation among Veterans with SCI/D. We recruited a convenience sample of individuals with SCI/D at the Hines Veterans Affairs (VA) SCI/D Unit. Participants were asked to take photographs exemplifying their experiences and activities regarding participation. Within four weeks, participants returned their photographs and completed semi-structured interviews to discuss their photographs. Interview transcripts were analyzed using an inductive coding approach …

This proposition was composed from a reconstitution of elements that integrated the project “Paris – Tokyo by train,” third part of the Japan trilogy, realized by the artist in 2009. More than illustrate or reveal the background of this project, the texts and images that are reproduced here intend to open new perspectives on how the echoes of the past can be articulated with the personal narrative. This approach allows as well as to resignify the dynamics implied in this quest of new senses.
