THE JUNK THAT 8 K-TOWN (View-Master Haiku Series 1, 2 & 3)

My first session taking photos of bush junk near the K-Town train station led to an addiction. I started to see things within images that aroused deeper contemplation. The miniature Eiffel Tower within one landscape seemed to expertly align with a gasping car belly that paid homage to Peter Dam’s The Dogs That 7 Sparrows.

Absent past owners became unconscious artists. Objects in their adopted environments became creatures with lives beyond previous incarnations. I saw things as representations, serendipitous alignments, but more importantly, a culture addicted to …

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

Taking a critical heritage approach to late modern naming and placemaking, we discuss how the power to name reflects the power to control people, their land, their past, and ultimately their future. Our case study is the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve (MABR), a recently invented place on Vancouver Island, located in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Through analysis of representations and landscape, we explore MABR as state-sanctioned branding, where a dehumanized nature is packaged for and marketed to wealthy ecotourists. Greenwashed by a feel-good “sustainability” discourse, MABR constitutes colonial placemaking and economic development, representing no break with past practices.

For centuries the stories of disabled people were not our own to tell. We were silenced by politics and power dynamics beyond our control, and when we succeeded it was “in spite of” our disabilities. I am interested in the reframing of this narrative and discovering my place in this historic trajectory.

The purpose of this project was to explore how light affects the overall emotion of a picture when color and facial expressions are removed. Typically, a viewer’s emotion is affected by color and expressions seen on different faces. Each model will have their portrait taken in six different light set-ups. Through those six different photos, I will demonstrate how much light affects a viewer’s interpretation of mood for each picture.

Arguably, there are few examples of imagery in advertising that are more powerful than professional quality fashion portraits. However, creating successful images in this genre is incredibly challenging. Photographers must not only master the crafts of lighting, posing and other techniques in their profession, but they must also master scheduling, time management, communication and interpersonal relationships. The photographer must rely on a team of professionals, from make-up artists to models. The art of creating a professional quality photographic por­trait is a skill that an undergraduate student may take their entire educational career to master. On a separate path, an undergraduate may also take their career to master freehand drawing and sketching. When these two creative paths align, the results can be extraordinary. This poster will showcase the journey of one undergraduate student to combine their photographic and artistic portrait skills along with software techniques to create one of a kind photographic portrait sketches. The poster will serve as a best practices guide to the creation of each image.

Infrared photography is a seldom-explored photographic technique, however there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained in regard to tonality and surrealism when utilizing this technique. The process of capturing infrared images through an infrared lens filter is a more practical, yet still complex, approach to this photography technique. Resulting images lack definition and need refinement through digital editing. This poster will serve the following purposes: 1. Outline the process of capturing images with an infrared sensitive lens filter. 2. Outline the process of editing infrared images in order to properly utilize their tonality and surrealistic properties.
