Something I have noticed about Denison is that I am surrounded by people who care immensely about the world and about humanity. These people have encouraged and inspired me to educate myself, experience things for myself, and form opinions myself—all of which were new to me as a freshman. These experiences have led me to a very important understanding: we all have the capacity to contribute to the community, and we all have the responsibility to be informed and compassionate. Life is based on the relationships we build and the community we are a part of.

This short story is derived from the Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda poem “A él.” It incorporates phrases from the poem and develops them into a concrete plot. It explores the literary and personal interpretations of a poem in the form of prose and imitates the style and narrative emphasis of the original work.

The Chilean author, Diamela Eltit, is known as a writer who discusses oppression of women and the historical-cultural conditions that Chile has lived in over the past thirty years. Her literary style creates an opportunity for writers and artists to express and demonstrate political resistance in an obviously defiant manner. In much of her writing, Eltit examines society after the coup d'état in 1973 and the dictatorship of Pinochet in Chile. She evokes a vivid image of life during the dictatorship, or in the case of her novel, Los vigilantes, under the effects of dictatorial oppression.

In this essay, I interpret the experimental film El padre mío (1985) by Diamela Eltit and Loty. The film explores the symbolic father figure of Dictator Augusto Pinochet. Cinematic techniques are used to emphasize his changing role in Chilean society. I focus on the concept of “family”—that is, as a symbol of Chilean national identity—as it transitions through the chronology found within El padre mío. At first, the elimination of individualism within the Pinochet-headed “family” allows for a clear understanding of its nature and the inherent components of uniformity, conformity, structure, and censorship. In the contemporary Chilean novel, Lumpérica, author Diamela Eltit makes a strong statement about the brutality of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile and the effects of this rule over the Chilean people and society. Within the text, Eltit cleverly disguises various components of the dictatorship into theatrical symbols in order to create a sense of theatricality about the “production” put on by the dictatorship. The imagery and symbolism show the interrogating nature of the dictatorship, as well as the physical and mental constraints placed upon the country’s citizens throughout this era.
