Preliminary Archaeological Investigations Of Part Of The San Pedro Acequia, San Antonio, Texas, Fred Valdez Jr., Jack D. Eaton
Preliminary Archaeological Investigations Of Part Of The San Pedro Acequia, San Antonio, Texas, Fred Valdez Jr., Jack D. Eaton
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In April 1979, Mr. R. W. Miller, Director of Construction Management, General Services Administration (GSA), contacted the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, to request archaeological investigations of GSA property located south of the Old U.S. Arsenal, between South Flores Street and South Main Avenue in downtown San Antonio. The investigations would be conducted to determine if the Spanish Colonial San Pedro Acequia (not to be confused with San Pedro Creek nearby) ran through the property as indicated on old maps; and if so, to locate it and describe its construction and condition. This information …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During February through April 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an intensive archaeological survey at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Llano and Gillespie Counties, Texas. A summary of the 120 newly recorded sites is presented, along with more detailed information on shovel testing, auger testing and two excavated sites. Data from faunal and constant volume analyses at the excavated sites are described and tabulated. Appendices include documentation of a local collection, an artifact inventory from an earlier survey, and an analysis of phytoliths from one of the excavated sites.

In May 1977, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, and the firm of Eugene George, AIA Architect, carried out an intensive investigation and recording of a German farmstead in Victoria County, Texas. A detailed history of the family and the site and a complete architectural recording and analysis are included. Archaeological investigations of standing structures and sites of former structures are described. The results of the investigations are discussed in relation to archaeological investigations at other rural sites. Appendices on phosphate testing and detailed architectural drawings of the Schob house are included.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The monograph being published here is the first in a series of data-oriented reports derived from the archaeological and ethnohistorical project centered on the modern town of Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico. To our gratification, the project produced a great deal of information. We have decided to meet the problem of adequate publication of the results in two ways. The first is by a volume of essays which aim at synthesizing the various aspects of the data and drawing conclusions from it. This single volume will be published elsewhere and is now (1979) in preparation. The other means of publication is by …

Ethnohistoric Notes On Indian Groups Associated With Three Spanish Missions At Guerrero, Coahuila, T. N. Campbell
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Three Spantsh missions, San Francisco Solano, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo, were established near the Rio Grande at present Guerrero, northeastern Coahuila, during the years 1700-1703. Remnants of at least 88 distinctively named Indian groups at various times came to live at one or more of these missions. In 1975- 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas San Antonio, supported by funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Kathryn O'Connor Foundation, conducted archaeological excavations at two of these missions, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo. Since the cultural debris recovered from excavations is …

The Vicissitudes Of Solo Editing, Don Higginbotham
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
To be the chief cook and bottle-washer for a project in historical editing -- literally, a one-person enterprise -- invariably results in problems and circumstances quite foreign to many of you. This editor is surely a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. He cannot assign to others specific responsibilities for periods of time or types of letters. It means, as is the case with the Iredell Papers, that the lone editor does it all -- searches for manuscripts, transcribes, edits, and so on. Indeed, during the initial years of the undertaking, I taught at Louisiana State University, which was far removed …

Reviewing The Reviewers, William B. Willcox
Reviewing The Reviewers, William B. Willcox
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The present level of reviewing for our editions is, to my mind, lower than that of the editing itself. Leave aside the occasional critics, high priests of ipsissima verba, who bemoan our textual impurities; look at the average, run-of-the-mill review. It normally contains a paragraph of mild praise for the editing, a paragraph on what the editee, if there is such a word, was doing in the period covered (this can often be written from the jacket blurb), and a paragraph that points out a few errors or, for lack of them, challenges a few specific editorial comments. The result …

Letter From The President, Arthur S. Link
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The main purpose of this initial letter is to appeal to each member to constitute himself or herself as an informal member of the Membership Committee in pressing a drive for new members. I also want to emphasize that the Association for Documentary Editing is interested in having among its membership persons doing documentary editing in all fields, including persons who work in texts of ancient history, Arabic texts, medieval manuscripts, literary texts, and so on down to the documents of our own time.

"Verbatim Et Literatim", Arthur S. Link
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The introduction to Volume 31 of the Papers of Woodrow Wilson provided President Arthur Link with an opportunity to repeat some of his editorial rules. Their relevance to some recent pros-and-cons voiced on literal transcribing and other facets of editorial decision-making make these excerpts from Link's most recent volume appropriate.

The Lost Art Of Reviewing, And Other Matters, R. A. Rutland
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
During this first year the ADE Newsletter has been, like all efforts, a bit untidy. We have probably paid too little attention to some important aspect of documentary editing. It seems to me that our rapid growth as an organization proved that the regular journals are not meeting our demands, but it may be too ambitious to aspire to publication of a regular journal. Perhaps subsidies for books dealing with the editorial process would be a better way to spend our funds.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Building on the base established by Robert Rutland, the 1980 numbers of the ADE Newsletter will seek to become an arena for dialogue about the craft of documentary editing. Dialogues are perhaps not always conducted in arenas, but then in his presidential address at Princeton, Arthur Link urged that we initiate "lively communication and discussion • • • to improve our standards" of selection, annotation, and methodology.

Until 1975 only 20 Henry Fielding (1707-1754) letters were known to exist, but the efforts of Martin C. Battestin, William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of English at the University of Virginia, have led to the discovery of 40 additional letters in recent years.
A New Generation Of Editors, Lester J. Cappon
A New Generation Of Editors, Lester J. Cappon
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
As the number of projects increased, more editors were needed; and young historians were gradually attracted toward editing, to some degree impelled by the crisis in the educational marketplace. Editors of the 1950s and '60s had "learned to do by doing," applying their knowledge of historical methods to the task. By and large, they were seasoned historians who responded to the challenge of comprehensive editing and its potential contribution to scholarship. By the 1970s the multiplication of projects raised serious questions about the supply of editors and the training of neophytes. An interesting correlation during the quarter-century 1950-1975 can be …
