In September 2024, New York fashion brand Sandy Liang faced backlash online for its girlish style codes as part of a broader debate about trends that reinforced gender stereotypes, like tradwives, “girl dinner” and the coquette aesthetic. However, critics misjudge the brand, which is grounded not in internet trends but in the designer’s real-world experiences. In addition, thanks to the complex fashion landscape, no garment is inherently political but dependent on the wearer’s intentions and styling choices.

This piece examines Palestinian singer Elyanna’s historic Coachella performance as a cultural moment shaped by visibility, constraint, and the politics of existence. Through firsthand observation and contextual analysis, it traces how Palestinian art—particularly music, fashion, and embodied performance—functions under conditions where identity itself is politicized. Elyanna’s presence on a global festival stage is framed not as a singular breakthrough, but as part of a broader continuum of Palestinian cultural assertion before and after October 7, when artistic expression increasingly carried material risk. By situating her performance alongside shifting industry responses, audience reception, and the evolving role of Palestinian artists in …

For centuries, the U.S. has had a complicated relationship with immigration policies and people of color. And the U.S./Mexican border has long been a source of contention. From Operation Wetback to Trump’s “Build the Wall” campaign, Mexicans have faced outright prejudice and hate. This work will delve into the contradictory policies of the U.S. using Mexicans for physical labor while simultaneously deporting them back to Mexico. It will investigate the experiences of Mexicans in this country and the incongruity of many Americans that maintain anti-Mexican sentiments while also celebrating Mexican holidays, such as Dia de los Muertos or Cinco de …

After recent inclusivity movements, the fashion industry had a reckoning that they need to do better when it comes to diversity. Size, age, and gender have started to have better representation in recent years; however, disability representation is still lagging. If the fashion industry wants to become truly inclusive, it needs to start representing disabled individuals positively and regularly both on the runway and in campaigns.

This critical essay examines the use of tropes and themes in modern comic books and how they are used to protest President Donald Trump’s policies, actions and supporters. It begins with a detailed history of tropes used in comic books and how some of the first superhero comic book writers created these tropes in order to protest the social injustices of their times. It shifts to the first trope, the “compromised hero” where a hero is turned evil. It is used in “Secret Empire,” a book where Captain America turns evil and takes over the presidency. His rise to power …

In 2015, President Barack Obama pledged to admit more than 10,000 Syrians fleeing the civil war, but with an asterisk: the near absence of religious minorities, including Christians, Yazidis and Shia Muslims. It is an omission that some have charged is discriminatory but, at the very least, has left some of the world’s most vulnerable hanging in the balance.

In 1964, legendary comedian Lenny Bruce was brought to court on an obscenity charge after years and repeated arrests for using what was then deemed to be sexually vulgar language. Despite the testimony of fellow artists and intellectuals (Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, James Baldwin), Bruce was convicted. The symbolism of what Bruce stood for is way more important than the four months he consequently spent in a workhouse. It proved that comedy has the power to shake the system- make people challenge authority and question the value of parallel thinking. Now – in 2015 – America is obsessed with outrage. …
