Bureaucratic Modernity And The Erosion Of Practical Reason: A Rhetorical Education As An Antidote, David Impellizzeri Dec 2019

Bureaucratic Modernity And The Erosion Of Practical Reason: A Rhetorical Education As An Antidote, David Impellizzeri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To what extent and in what ways does modernity reveal itself through the bureaucratic? This project aims at an interpretive understanding of bureaucratic modernity. The rationalization of society and action in the (late) modern world requires that an increasing number of human activities and domains be explained in allegedly neutral, ‘rational’ terms and without reference to morally substantive ends. Ultimately, this entails a form of epistemic reductionism that elevates instrumental rationality to the exclusion of practical reason and probabilistic ways of knowing. Bureaucratic modernity signifies a decrease in choices that can be legitimized in public on some basis other …

Voices On The Horizon: A Theory Of Ludic Rhetoric, Jeff Lohr Dec 2019

Voices On The Horizon: A Theory Of Ludic Rhetoric, Jeff Lohr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Voices on the horizon: A theory of ludic rhetoric begins with the assumption that rhetoric and play offer hope for cooperation and community in a fragmented and divided world. Rhetoric and play share an intellectual trajectory in the history of ideas. The earliest use of the terms rhetor and rhetoric in the Western tradition encouraged playful cooperation. The move toward reason and science during the Enlightenment relegated rhetoric to mere techniques for persuasion and silenced alternative avenues for seeking truth. Reclaiming traditional rhetoric as a meeting place for potential negotiation and cooperation encourages constructive civic discourse. The conclusion of this …

“Tell Me, Bambi Or Yogi Ever Hunt You Back?” The Windigo Myth: A Metaphor For Imperialism And Mental Illness, Christine Carlough Dec 2019

“Tell Me, Bambi Or Yogi Ever Hunt You Back?” The Windigo Myth: A Metaphor For Imperialism And Mental Illness, Christine Carlough

Senior Capstone Theses

The Canadian indigenous myth of the windigo, originating from Algonquian-speaking tribes of the subarctic Northeast like Ojibwe and Cree, is a manifestation for a multitude of fears. This myth originated hundreds of years ago in order to explain the horror and lack of understanding of a mental illness, which would later be known as Windigo Psychosis. Windigo Psychosis is a culture-bound syndrome for an insatiable desire to consume human flesh. A culture-bound syndrome is recognizable and unique only within a specific society or culture, so in other words, Windigo Psychosis is specific to this area in Canada due to a …

Called To Serve: Understanding The Role Of The Woman’S Mission Decision Narrative In Latter-Day Saint Culture And Belief, Rachel Ross Dec 2019

Called To Serve: Understanding The Role Of The Woman’S Mission Decision Narrative In Latter-Day Saint Culture And Belief, Rachel Ross

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In my thesis I explore the role of mission decision narratives of women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Before 2012, women could not serve missions until age 21. Once the minimum age was changed to 19 in October of 2012, many more women were able to serve on mission as the opportunity was less likely to disrupt their education or romantic relationships. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, missions are seen as a priesthood duty for men but a matter of choice for women. This ability to choose and the narrative that follows …

The Changing News Paradigm Of South Mississippi’S Sun Herald As Seen Through The Eyes Of Its Journalists: 1968-2018, Judy Day Isbell Dec 2019

The Changing News Paradigm Of South Mississippi’S Sun Herald As Seen Through The Eyes Of Its Journalists: 1968-2018, Judy Day Isbell

Dissertations

From the earliest days of the American democracy, one of the key tenets of the new government was rule by an informed electorate. This notion of rule of the people, by the people, for the people was established in the first article of the United States Constitution when the houses of Congress were carefully designed, and the idea of a knowledgeable constituency was emphasized in the first amendment when among such basic freedoms as speech, religion and assembly was freedom of the press.

Newspapers in America have changed significantly since the writing of that constitution, but most particularly in the …

Video Game Audio Techniques Applied To Board Game Companion Applications, Jaydon Osborn

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Video games have been one of the most popular forms of entertainment since the turn of the 20th century. Starting in pinball machines that developed into arcade games and now lovingly into virtual reality, console, and handheld gaming systems, video games have become a normal factor in people's lives. It is no mystery why they are so popular; games not only give us a sense of accomplishment beyond what our physical and mental limits could achieve, but also evoke our imaginations by drawing us into a new world that is magical or something we would never have seen before. Think …

Nuclear Ban Treaty And The Southern Asian ‘Nuclear Troika’, Sitakanta Mishra Nov 2019

Nuclear Ban Treaty And The Southern Asian ‘Nuclear Troika’, Sitakanta Mishra

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Of late, nuclear weapons have been multilaterally outlawed similar to the other weapons of mass destruction. But the nuclear weapon states, barring North Korea, and the sole victim of nuclear weapons Japan, have remained outside the treaty process. This does expose the usual clarion call of the nuclear weapon states for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. This study attempts to enquire the policy approach of the three nuclear weapon states in Southern Asia – China, India and Pakistan who proclaim themselves as ‘responsible’ nuclear states – regarding the ban treaty comparatively. While China’s stated position seem to be based more on …

The Lives Of Things On Pulau Ujir; Aru’S Engagement With Commercial Expansion, Joss R. Whittaker Oct 2019

The Lives Of Things On Pulau Ujir; Aru’S Engagement With Commercial Expansion, Joss R. Whittaker

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In places with limited access to manufactured goods, people must develop creative strategies to make the most of available materials, both those produced by humans and those taken from the natural world. Although Pulau Ujir, in the Aru Islands, has a long history of engagement with global trade networks, until recently the community’s access to manufactured goods was limited and infrequent. As a result, in the past objects there tended to take on new lives, and still do today: they are modified, re-purposed, and recycled in ingenious ways. This article explores the relationship between people and things in Ujir from …

Oral Traditions In Cryptic Song Lyrics; Continuous Cultural Revitalization In Batuley, A. Ross Gordon, Sonny A. Djonler Oct 2019

Oral Traditions In Cryptic Song Lyrics; Continuous Cultural Revitalization In Batuley, A. Ross Gordon, Sonny A. Djonler

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Oral knowledge and teachings are referenced but not salient in cryptic song lyrics sung at ritual festivals in Batuley villages of the Aru Islands in Eastern Indonesia. The article examines the relation of the lyrics in songs to associated teachings and how they are vitalized and transmitted over centuries with veracity. Song teachings relate to pearl oyster and sea cucumber harvests, and cosmological beliefs associated with the Maluku Siwa-Lima trade-based moiety system, which took on a unique form in the Aru Islands. Song-related teachings demonstrate cultural adaptations giving meaning to centuries of peripheral engagement in hemispheric trade networks by a …

Tamalola; Transregional Connectivities, Islam, And Anti-Colonialism On An Indonesian Island, Hans Hägerdal, Emilie Wellfelt Oct 2019

Tamalola; Transregional Connectivities, Islam, And Anti-Colonialism On An Indonesian Island, Hans Hägerdal, Emilie Wellfelt

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The present study focuses on a set of events in the Aru Islands, Maluku, in the late eighteenth century which are documented in some detail by Dutch records. A violent rebellion with Muslim and anti-European overtones baffled the Dutch colonialists (VOC) and led to a series of humiliations for the Company on Aru, before eventually being subdued. As one of the main catalysts of the conflict stands the chief Tamalola from the Muslim island Ujir. Interestingly, this person is also a central figure in local traditions from Ujir. Moreover, his story connects with wider cultural and economic networks in eastern …

The Pearl Rush In Aru, 1916; A Case Study In Writing Commodity History In Southeast Asia, Adrian Vickers Oct 2019

The Pearl Rush In Aru, 1916; A Case Study In Writing Commodity History In Southeast Asia, Adrian Vickers

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

While the long history of “commerce” in Southeast Asia is well studied, less examination has been made of the histories of capitalism, particularly in terms of the encounters that took place around commodities. This article provides a translation and analysis of a description of Dobo on Aru in 1911. At the time it was a “Klondike”, on what Julia Martínez and I have termed “the pearl frontier”. The Aru islands were the site for an Australian-led pearl shell consortium that ran from the beginning of the twentieth century until the 1940s, which brought in a large number of Japanese divers …

Between Resistance And Co-Operation; Contact Zones In The Aru Islands In The Voc Period, Hans Hägerdal Oct 2019

Between Resistance And Co-Operation; Contact Zones In The Aru Islands In The Voc Period, Hans Hägerdal

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The article is focused on early colonial interaction with the Aru Islands, geographically located in southern Maluku, at the easternmost end of the Indian Ocean world. The study examines how relationships were constructed in the course of the seventeenth century, how they were institutionalized and how this engendered forms of hybridity. Moreover, it discusses forms of resistance and avoidance in relation to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Aru constitutes an interesting case as it is was one of the easternmost places in the world in which Islam and Christianity gained a (limited) foothold in the early-modern period, and it …

Money And Masohi; An Anthropological Review Of Copra Commodity Management, Tony Rudyansjah, Ode Zulkarnain Sahji Tihurua Oct 2019

Money And Masohi; An Anthropological Review Of Copra Commodity Management, Tony Rudyansjah, Ode Zulkarnain Sahji Tihurua

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In discussions on exchange, as well as an object in gift exchange money is often seen as a medium of exchange and a universal equivalent in the circulation of commodities. However, in the case of the management of the copra commodity which we researched on the island of Seram, money had become a factor in shaping a dynamic of gift continuity and transformation in the realm of the copra economy (in this context of the customary practice masohi). It transpires that money has promoted both the observance and erosion of masohi custom. Masohi is a tradition of community work in …

Human Foraging Responses To Climate Change; Here Sorot Entapa Rockshelter On Kisar Island, Hendri A. F. Kaharudin, Mahirta Mahirta, Shimona Kealy, Stuart Hawkins, Clara Boulanger, Sue O’Connor

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This study explores prehistoric human subsistence adaptations within the context of changing marine and terrestrial environments on the tiny Island of Kisar, beginning during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition around 15,000 years ago (ka). We use zooarchaeological data on faunal remains (vertebrates and invertebrates) recovered from Here Sorot Entapa rockshelter (HSE) in temporal relationship to climate data from Flores to document prehistoric human responses to regional sea-level, temperature, and associated habitat changes that occurred after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Human settlement intensity peaked during the colder drier conditions of the Bølling-Allerød period at 14.4-13 ka, and the site was abandoned during …

Reclaiming Impact In The Age Of Awareness-Raising For Human Rights, Azadeh Pourzand, Ali Arab Oct 2019

Reclaiming Impact In The Age Of Awareness-Raising For Human Rights, Azadeh Pourzand, Ali Arab

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

In the last decade, the practice of awareness-raising for human rights has appeared as notably common across the board. Nevertheless, widespread awareness-raising has not necessarily always resulted in meaningful and sustainable impact. Accepting that awareness raising is not a panacea, we challenge the global collective fascination with big impact, while considering the power of small strategic impact that invests in education, and building alliances, and has the potential to last and to expand by way of gradual encroachment through contextually-defined grassroots means natural to its course.

Empowered through social media, advocates are increasingly enthusiastic about reaching massive audiences by way …

Beyond Light, Medium, And Dark: Diversity And Inclusivity In The Makeup And Beauty Industries, Adrienne Werle Oct 2019

Beyond Light, Medium, And Dark: Diversity And Inclusivity In The Makeup And Beauty Industries, Adrienne Werle

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The goal of this project is to promote diversity within beauty and continue the push for representation and inclusivity. I conducted research on the history of makeup in America during the 1900s and studied how the makeup industry has evolved into what it is today. Rihanna’s launch of Fenty Beauty in 2017 was seen as the start of a new era, challenging beauty brands to be more inclusive. As Fenty created a new industry standard of 40 shades, many other brands followed suit. I then compared my findings with the experiences of real women in my community. I interviewed 10 …
