In evaluating personal correspondence, most editors must spend considerable time speculating on authorial intention and the responses of the women and men who were the intended audience for each letter. Tonight I shall discuss what may be learned from an archive of letters where little such informed guesswork is necessary. At least on my part.

Institute For The Editing Of Historical Documents

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The Wisconsin Historical Society, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) sponsor the annual Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents. Fondly called "Camp Edit," the 2003 Institute will be conducted from June 16 to 21, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will provide 15 to 18 interns with classroom instruction and hands-on experience in the techniques of documentary editing.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. There has been an increase in the general budget of $7,401, a gain of 14 percent for the year, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $60,082. A portion of this increase is due to an overage of $1,535 from the 2001 annual conference in Raleigh. Most of the increase, however, is due to the generous contributions of our members who renewed their memberships at higher levels or made contributions to the association. We can thank our members for their generosity, which makes possible a sound financial situation. Moreover, in spite of …

Good morning. It's a pleasure to be here. I am an admirer and grateful user of a number of documentary editions produced by people in this room. On a small scale, as an editor of a scholarly edition of Ridolfi's The Life of Titian, I experienced the rigors and rewards of your special kind of academic labor. The work is painstaking, repetitive, sometimes tedious. For many editions, scholars must invest decades in close reading, collaborative research, and careful transcription.

When sisters Catharine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe published The American Woman's Home, or, Principles of Domestic Science; Being a Guide to the Formation and Maintenance of Economical, Healthful, Beautiful and Christian Homes in 1869 as both a textbook for girls' schools and a home reference work, the new book quickly became the standard in its field. It replaced, and drew heavily from, Catharine's earlier Treatise on Domestic Economy (1841). In addition, the sisters used material from columns written by Harriet, and in some instances copiously quoted male authorities on certain subjects. The result was not a book to …

This article explores the relationship between literature and the history of Japanese society. The study shows that many literary works reflect the dynamics of culture, economics, ideology, and thoughts in Japanese society. Based on the, the writer believes that those literary works are useful to understand the spirit of age (Zeitgeist) in Japanese history. In 1966 New Order regime imposed a regulation that demands Indonesian citizens of Chinese descendants to change their name with "Indonesian name" to accelerate the process of assimilation "foreign descendents" into Indonesian society. This article examines this practice of changing names by surveying the name of Chinese in the obituary section of mass media. The writer argues that the regulation allows the Chinese descendants to change their names in any way they find appropriate. In doing to, it expands the anthrophoneme deixis function in Indonesia.

Artikel ini mempertanyakan sejauh mana masyarakat Belanda progresif di bidang norma bahasa, kesusastraan, dan gender. Dinilai dengan diskusi tentang norma bahasa di kamus Van Dale dan resepsu terhadap kamus tersebut di Indonesia serta pandangan terhadap penulis wanita dan statusnya dalam masyarakat Belanda. Artikel ini berkesimpulan bahwa kebudayaan Belanda tidaklah seprogresif yang dibayangkan orang. Dalam hal gender, pandangan terhadap status dan kemampuan perempuan yang agak miring mungkin disebabkan oleh perempuan itu sendiri. Dalam hal kesusastraan, misalnya, perempuan akan diperlakukan sama seperti laki-laki jika mereka menulis dan bertingkah laku berbeda dari yang sekarang.

This study discusses the relationship between indirect speech act and politeness in directive speech act. To get the data, questioners with personal information of respondents and nine directive speech acts which must be assessed by these Indonesian speakers in Jakarta are employed. The analysis shows that there is a positive correlation between the indirectness of a directive speech act and the degree of politeness. The more indirect a directive speech act, the more polite it is. Nevertheless, the correlation is not absolute. There are other parameters that determine the degree of politeness such as intonation, choice of words, and cultural …

Carl Linnaeus, or Carl von Linne as he was called after his ennoblement in 1762, is Sweden's most famous scientist. Linnaeus is primarily known for having created the nomenclature for plants, published for the first time in Species plantarum in 1753. Born in 1707 in southern Sweden, he studied at the University of Lund and later at Uppsala where he became professor of medicine in 1741. Before his academic appointment, he had a remarkable international career resulting from the introduction of his Systema naturae, published in its first edition in 1735 in Amsterdam. The extended title provided by the editors advances their views of the significance of Lieber's journal and implies a potential readership for their text. Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms.
