Editorial Practices--An Historian's View, Robert J. Taylor Jan 1981

Editorial Practices--An Historian's View, Robert J. Taylor

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

All those engaged in the editing of literary and historical documents are deeply in debt to Dr. Tanselle for his thorough analysis of the editorial standards that have been set for the dozens of projects now going forward. Somewhat to the embarrassment of the profession, he has seized upon individual statements of editorial practice that have internal inconsistencies and that are in conflict with the editor's actual practice. And although his article, now before us for discussion, is aimed primarily at the shortcomings of historical editors, he has not let the literary fraternity escape unscathed, some of whom, he finds, …

Dearth And Bias: Issues In The Editing Of Ethnohistorical Materials, Patricia Galloway Jan 1981

Dearth And Bias: Issues In The Editing Of Ethnohistorical Materials, Patricia Galloway

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

It is in these two problem areas, lack of material and ethnocentric bias, that the historical editor can best offer help to the ethnohistorian. The importance of any single early colonial document containing description of preliterate peoples in North America is almost incalculable. In some few instances our knowledge of the very existence of individual tribes rests upon such a single document. 5 For this reason the historical editor should consider the needs of ethnohistory when he is choosing documents to edit for publication. The modern growth of interest in social history has broken the hold of the "Great White …

The Short Happy Thesis Of G. Thomas Tanselle, Don L. Cook Jan 1981

The Short Happy Thesis Of G. Thomas Tanselle, Don L. Cook

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

You will be relieved to know that the sheaf of pages I hold in my hand does not constitute the paper I intend to inflict upon you this morning. It is instead a Xerox copy of Tom Tanselle's article "The Editing of Historical Documents" as it appeared in the 1978 volume of Studies in Bibliography. I display it in this way for two contrasting reasons. First, it provides the physical evidence of one salient fact of Tom's critical scholarship. That is, when he writes on a topic he writes on all of it. There is an encyclopedic quality to his …

Review Of The Revolution Remembered: Eyewitness Accounts Of The War For IndependenceJohn C. Dann, Ed., Constance B. Schulz

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The Revolution Remembered makes a major contribution to scholarship of the Revolutionary War by bringing together in one volume a sampling of the rich resources of the common soldier's memory of that war as found in the Revolutionary War Pension and Land Warrant Records in Record Group 15 of the National Archives. Any student of the revolution who has used these records is aware of their virtually untapped potential for interpreting the way in which the war affected the common soldier both during the military campaigns themselves and in the decades after the men returned to their communities and families. …

The George C. Davis Site, Cherokee County, Texas: Spring 1980 Archeological Investigations, Ross C. Fields, J. Peter Thurmond

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The results of archeological investigations in portions of the George C. Davis Site are presented in this report prepared by Ross Fields and J. Peter Thurmond . Stringent contract requirements and the provisions of Texas Antiquities Permit No. 237 dictate that this report be brief and descriptive in nature. Requirements such as inclusion of a detailed site investigation history and environmental data were excluded and extensive excavations were stressed in preference to detailed analyses and comparisons. Field investigations were limited by contract to 20 working days and the analysis/write-up to 10 working days. The governing research design was prepared by …

Archeological assessments at Sites 41GL57 and 41GL91 in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area are described in this report prepared by Steven M. Kotter and Linda A. Nance . Sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, these assessments represent an excellent example of sensitivity to cultural resources during the planning stages of development designed to enhance visitor utilization and appreciation of Enchanted Rock.

Significant findings at Site 41GL57 include the identification of specific areas of intact prehistoric deposits which yielded artifacts of the Late Archaic and Late Prehistoric periods. Methods to achieve compatibility of development plans with the preservation of …

The field investigations were carried out by Daniel Potter, Lee Spencer, and Robert Scott, all of whom …

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41tg114, 41tg115, And 41tg116 Tom Green, Texas, Wayne C. Young

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

During September 1980, archaeological sites 41TG114, 41TG115, and 41TG116 were tested for prehistoric cultural debris to determine their size, depth, cultural affiliations, and archaeological significance. Testing was conducted by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation under the Procedures for the Protection of Cultural and Historic Properties (36 C.F.R., Part 800).

Testing results indicate that these sites contain very little cultural debris or intact stratigraphic deposits. Sites 41TG114 and 41TG116 appear to represent very minor surface campsites. Site 41TG115 appears to represent a deflated site with materials mixed on the present ground surface. No further …

Excavations At The Alamo Shrine (Mission San Antonio De Valero), Jack D. Eaton

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In March 1977, excavations were conducted in front of Alamo Shrine where flagstone paving was being replaced by the City of San Antonio. The subsurface investigations sampled and described the soil stratigraphy which has accumulated through 2.5 centuries of occupation. The distinctive soil levels contained datable cultural materials which relate to some of the major events which took place from the earliest settlement of Mission San Antonio de Valero through subsequent periods of Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-Texan occupations. The artifact collections have provided additional information on the material culture of the different ethnic and cultural groups to occupy the Alamo. …

This mission was only partially successful due to …
