Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In June 1982, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio (CAR-UTSA), conducted an archaeological survey with subsurface testing at the proposed Dos Rios Wastewater Treatment Plant (previously called the Confluence site) located in Bexar County, Texas. The survey was performed for the City of San Antonio and was conducted under the administration of a joint venture of consulting engineers, acting as the city's representatives. Two archaeological sites (41 BX 124 and 41 BX 567) were examined. No further work is recommended for 41 BX 124. However, 41 BX 567 needs further investigation to determine eligibility …

In the summer of 1981, the second season of excavations at the Rancho de las Cabras (41 WN 30) was conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Austin, Texas. This season included further architectural testing and stratigraphic excavations in a large trash pit located during season one, July 1980. A five by six meter area of the interior northwest corner was excavated revealing wall trenches and floors of part of a jacal complex. A more exact plan of Rancho de las Cabras was drawn, and professional …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

An analysis of the 1982 field season activities at Rancho de las Cabras (41 WN 30) is presented in this report. Additional data concerning structural details and construction activities at the site are presented. The results of further archival research provide additional information concerning the history of the Rancho de las Cabras site, its relationship to Mission Espada, and the adjacent landowners. An expanded genealogy is presented of the Calvillo and Delgado families, both intimately connected to Rancho de las Cabras. Recommendations are made for further work at the site.

Archaeological Testing Of The Reading Site, Site 41bu16 Burleson County, Texas, Joe T. Denton

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Construction activities during the replacement and upgrading of the State Highway 21 bridge over the Brazos River in Burleson County uncovered a previously unknown portion of archaeological Site 41BU16, the Reading Site, within the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) right-of-way.

Efforts by local concerned citizens resulted in the salvaging of one partially intact burial and the notification of the SDHPT cultural resources staff.

Evidence recovered during SDHPT testing indicates that the area was occupied over an extensive period of time from the Archaic Period to the Late Prehistoric Period. Also indicated is a late nineteenth and early …

Test Excavations At Site 41cd56 Colorado County, Texas, Glenn T. Goode

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Site 41CD56 is an aboriginal site located on Crier Creek in northwestern Colorado County, Texas. Testing in October, 1983, revealed that moderate amounts of thermally altered chert/quartzite and lithic debitage were contained in sandy deposits varying from 20 to 110 cm in depth. Two burned rock accumulations, possibly disturbed hearths, were discovered; but no diagnostic tools or indicators of cultural affiliation were found.

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41fy141, 41fy151, 41fy152, And 41fy153 Fayette County, Texas, Glenn T. Goode

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Four prehistoric sites occurring within a one mile stretch of FM 153, ten miles northwest of LaGrange, Texas, were investigated in November, 1983. These sites were evidenced by light scatters of burned rock and lithic debris on the surface. Excavation revealed shallow sandy loam deposits containing very small amounts of cultural material. The portion of these sites within the FM 153 right-of-way have no potential for further work.

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41rt128 And 41 Rt129 Robertson County, Texas, Joe T. Denton

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Testing was undertaken in November 1982 of two sites on State Highway 6 between Hearne and Bryan in order to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. Archaeological Site 41RT128 was typified by numerous bone fragments of Bos species, and Site 41RT129 was evidenced by a lithic scatter on a sandy hilltop on the south bank of Pin Oak Creek.

Testing indicated that Site 41RT128 was a late nineteenth century farm site and Site 41RT129 was a prehistoric lithic manufacturing site and possible campsite. Because of the depth and nature of these sites it was determined that no further …

Test Excavation At Site 41kt32 Kent County, Texas, Joe T. Denton

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Site 41KT32 is an open prehistoric campsite located on the Salt Fork of the Brazos River in Kent County, Texas. Test excavations revealed that the site is primarily outside of the proposed bridge replacement project area. Scattered burned rock was noted, and artifacts recovered indicate site habitation during the Late Archaic Period.

On the basis of the site's limited extent within the project and the lack of direct impact by the project on the primary portion of the site, no further investigation is being recommended.

Research Design Proposal For Investigation Of Site 41tv338 In The Barton Creek Drainage Travis County, Texas

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Site 41TV338, located in the west bank and terrace of Barton Creek west of Loop 360, was found in 1975. The SDHPT, during an archaeological survey in 1983, determined the site would be impacted by the present undertaking.

Because the area in the vicinity of the project is considered environmentally sensitive, very special construction specifications will be enforced during total implementation of the project. These specifications are designed to prohibit disruption of the natural environmental setting to the greatest degree possible. Most of the right of way acquired for construction of the highway facility is not to be touched during …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Reading Site, 41BU16, is a prehistoric and historic site located in Burleson County, Texas, on the south terrace of the Brazos River at the crossing of State Highway 21. The site was first reported in 1972 but was not known to extend into the right-of-way of SH 21 until the clearing of heavy brush in the right-of-way in 1979 revealed its presence. Since that time the site has been known by local collectors, but the archaeology section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) was not notified until August 25, 1983.

Since the bridge construction project …

Baker Cave, Val Verde County, Texas: The 1976 Excavations, Mary Frances Chadderon Jan 1983

Baker Cave, Val Verde County, Texas: The 1976 Excavations, Mary Frances Chadderon

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Excavations, in summer 1976, have provided new data on the ancient human occupations at Baker Cave, Val Verde County, Texas. One objective of the research program was to obtain further information on habitation at the site during Late Paleo-Indian times. Radiocarbon dates of 7000 B.C. can be linked to this period and are attributed to the Golondrina complex. This cultural pattern is represented by a deposit containing chipped stone artifacts and other cultural materials. The most important discovery was a cooking pit that yielded an abundance of faunal and floral remains. Interpretation of the paleoenvironmental data suggests a climatic regime …

Realities Of The Sermon: Some Considerations For Editors, Wilson H. Kimnach Jan 1983

Realities Of The Sermon: Some Considerations For Editors, Wilson H. Kimnach

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The word "sermon" derives from the Latin sermo, indicating a talk or discourse. That definition endures, with the historical narrowing of the term to the proselytizing public addresses of representatives of religious faiths. Metaphorically, of course, the term is applied to any exhortation of a more or less formal nature that resembles such homiletical efforts. The important point is that the sermon is an event in time that inevitably terminates when the oral discourse ends. As Richard Weaver has observed, "every speech which is designed to move is directed to a special audience in its unique situation"; I ultimately, this …

F. B. Sanborn And The Editing Of Thoreau, Joel Myerson Jan 1983

F. B. Sanborn And The Editing Of Thoreau, Joel Myerson

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

One of the most rapacious editors of nineteenth century American literary figures was Franklin Benjamin Sanborn (I831-1917). When he moved to Concord in the mid-1850s, Sanborn began making friends with all the major Transcendentalists. As Theodore Parker's literary executor (though Parker's widow prevented him from editing anything) and a friend of Bronson Alcott and Henry David Thoreau, he had access to their journals and manuscripts. But, as an editor, Sanborn left much to be desired: he often transcribed incorrectly, left out much material, and invented new material to suit his purposes. Perhaps the most famous example of Sanborn's editorial technique …

Textual Criticism And Composition Research, Patrick Scott Jan 1983

Textual Criticism And Composition Research, Patrick Scott

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

It's a commonplace among textual bibliographers that the questions they ask and answer apply across many different disciplines. As Fredson Bowers long ago argued, "No matter what the field of study, the basis lies in the analysis of the records in printed or in manuscript form."l Not just in high literature, but in history, philosophy, and the history of science, modern bibliographical editing is widely recognized as indispensable. Yet in bibliography's, and Professor Bowers', own traditional fiefdom, the English graduate program, one area has been almost totally neglected. Whereas twenty-five years ago, it was students of modern literature, especially the …

Optical Scanning And Cindex: Tools For Creating A Cumulative Index To The Laurens Papers, David R. Chesnutt Jan 1983

Optical Scanning And Cindex: Tools For Creating A Cumulative Index To The Laurens Papers, David R. Chesnutt

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

When the Papers of Henry Laurens project published its first volume in 1968, computers were still very much the domain of our scientific colleagues. Only a handful of humanists like Wilhelm Ott in Germany and Eric Boem in the United States had begun to realize the computer's potential for eliminating some of the drudgery associated with publishing scholarly materials. Today, computer assistance has become the sine qua non for almost every large-scale edition. Older editions like the Laurens Papers have had to automate their procedures gradually-moving step-by-step to replace traditional methods with computer-assisted methods.

The Laurens Papers began that process …

Dangerous To Documentary Editing: Copyright Office Report On Section 108, Michael J. Crawford Jan 1983

Dangerous To Documentary Editing: Copyright Office Report On Section 108, Michael J. Crawford

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Ever since the 1976 copyright act went into effect, the Copyright Office has been interpreting the paragraphs that apply to library and archival reproduction of copyright protected works in a way that could impair the ability of documentary editing projects to collect previously unpublished sources. In a report transmitted to Congress on 5 January this year, the Copyright Office has recommended that its interpretation be enacted into law. A brief explanation of the copyright law as it applies to unpublished written works will put the Register's report in context and illucidate the danger it poses.

Single-Editor Editions From Manuscript: The Journals Of Theodore Parker, Carol Johnston Jan 1983

Single-Editor Editions From Manuscript: The Journals Of Theodore Parker, Carol Johnston

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Anyone who undertakes to edit a text must necessarily make some basic decisions about the nature of that text and the purpose of the final edition. The editorial plan on which this edition is based was derived from a series of premises on the nature of the Parker manuscripts and on my purpose in editing them. The journal manuscripts are massive, encyclopedic documents rendering Parker's thought coherently, if not always according to strict grammatical usage. They are private, unpublished documents written in a hand that is cramped and difficult to read, and the manuscript pages are complicated by unformed words, …

Computer-Assisted Document Control For Editorial Projects, Paul Machlis Jan 1983

Computer-Assisted Document Control For Editorial Projects, Paul Machlis

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Effective organizing and indexing of historical and literary texts are essential to the work of documentary editing. Card files, typed lists, and computer printouts help us count and classify documents and provide access to materials by date, subject, owner, and other features. In doing so, they offer editors some control over the tens of thousands of documents that form each of the editions. Maintaining tools of document control is not our central work, but it is prerequisite to the publication of accurate and thoroughly annotated texts.

The following remarks concern the use of computers at four projects to produce instruments …

On Editing Old French Texts, Mary B. Rutgers Jan 1983

On Editing Old French Texts, Mary B. Rutgers

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

As I understand it, a major focus of our discussion this afternoon is to be the problem of writing a manual on editing for an audience that is-to say the least-not in agreement on a single best method of editing texts. By way of approaching the problem of "orthodoxy" in Old French textual criticism, let me describe how Alfred Foulet and I came to write our manual as we did, the readers we had in mind, and the reactions our work evoked. The manual, On Editing Old French Texts, was published in 1979 by the Regents Press of Kansas.

Some Reflections On The Soft Money Generation, Charles T. Cullen Jan 1983

Some Reflections On The Soft Money Generation, Charles T. Cullen

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

When I reflect on the state of our association after five years of existence I am pleased at what I see. We have been forced by circumstances to mature early-ours was a baptism by fire and I think we have succeeded. The hopes expressed at our organizational meeting in St. Louis in 1978 and the goals set by the first councils have been realized in a short period of time. Our membership has grown steadily and increasing numbers of people have attended our annual meetings to exchange information and ideas and to participate in the program. The editing guide called …

Booker T. Washington: The Labyrinth And The Thread, Louis R. Harlan Jan 1983

Booker T. Washington: The Labyrinth And The Thread, Louis R. Harlan

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

l am living proof that an editor can be a biographer. Whether an editor should be a biographer, or vice versa, depends on the person and the subject. I cannot speak for everyone faced with that dilemma, but for me as editor and biographer the double life proved that much richer. As a biographer focusing on the thread of biographical narrative I had the advantage of collaborating with an editor, a co-editor, and a corporal's guard of editorial researchers who explored the geography of the labyrinth-the historical context, the principal associates of my central figure, and even what Tom Clark …
