A Unique Perspective: Documentary Editors And Biography, David B. Mattern Jan 2004

A Unique Perspective: Documentary Editors And Biography, David B. Mattern

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Documentary editors are attracted to and often bemused and irritated by biography (and biographers). They have a unique perspective on this genre that I'm going to explore through the prism of my own experience as a biographer and a documentary editor. I've been an editor for nearly twenty years and in that time have written or collaborated on four biographical projects-a biography of Revolutionary War general Benjamin Lincoln, a selected letters edition of Dolley Payne Madison, and two children's biographies of Dolley and James Madison.

The Future Of University Presses, Janet Rabinowitch

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The "future of university presses" is an open-ended topic, and I don't pretend to be a crystal ball gazer, so I will focus my remarks more directly on trends and issues that are currently preoccupying my university press colleagues, developments that will have a strong influence on what our future is likely to be.

Obituary--Susan J. Rosowski, Frederick M. Link

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Susan Rosowski, Adele Hall Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, died on November 2, 2004, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Professor Rosowski was general editor of the Willa Cather Scholarly Edition, director of the Cather Project and the Cather International Seminar, and editor-in-chief of Cather Studies. She was the major force in creating and sustaining all of them. Over some twenty years, she was instrumental in securing Cather's place as a major twentieth century author. She won the University's highest awards for both teaching and scholarship, a rare achievement, and her professional life modeled …

The Editor As Biographer, John P. Kaminski Jan 2004

The Editor As Biographer, John P. Kaminski

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Editors are really biographers of sorts almost all the time when editing ~ the papers of their subjects. All meaningful characters who appear in documentary editions are usually identified in footnotes and head notes, biographical directories, introductions, and sometimes even in indexes. No one knows the subject-the person being studied-as well as the documentary editor. Day in and day out editors pore over their documents intently, attempting to make sense of the interrelationships among all the historical participants. As part of their responsibility, editors explain the intricacies and uncertainties in these relationships.

Archeological Excavation And Reburial Of Unmarked Historic Graves In The Pioneer Cemetary (41bo202), Brazoria County, Texas, Angelina L. Tiné, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Three unmarked graves within the predominantly African American Pioneer Cemetery in the City of Brazoria (Brazoria County), Texas, were exhumed and reburied within the cemetery. The graves were located within the right of way of State Highway 332, and were found during an earlier search phase done in conjunction with a planned expansion of the highway. The burial excavations and reburial were done in March and April 2003, by Prewitt and Associates, Inc., for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The graves contained the remains of three unknown individuals—a young woman (17–23 years old), an older woman (45–60 years old), …

Komedi Sebagai Sarana Kritik Sosial Dalam Kesusastraan Prancis Abad Ke-17 Dan 18, Ida Sundari Husen Oct 2003

Komedi Sebagai Sarana Kritik Sosial Dalam Kesusastraan Prancis Abad Ke-17 Dan 18, Ida Sundari Husen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The aim of comedy as a work of drama is to entertanin and ciritcize by making fun of the human characters and flaws or helpless situation. Comedy also makes fun of people from the county side who imitate the ways the Parisians dress and talk in exaggerated way. The works of the well-known comedy writers like Moli re (1622-1673), Marivaux (1688-1763) and Beaumarchais (1732-1799) deal with universal characters and problems, stereotypical human flaws, for example, stinginess, hypocrisy, arrogance, and snobbism.

Aspek Sintagmatis Dan Kolokasi Dalam Sinonimi Taksempurna Bahasa Prancis, Irzanti Sutanto Oct 2003

Aspek Sintagmatis Dan Kolokasi Dalam Sinonimi Taksempurna Bahasa Prancis, Irzanti Sutanto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Synonymous verbs are often confusing because on the one hand verbal pairs have the same meanings but on the other they cannot replace one another in all contexts. This paper examines the contexts of synonymous verbal pairs in French. It shows that aspects that limit the synonymity of a set of words are verbal meanings, semantic characteristics of accompanying words, verbal valence, syntactyc structure, and the commoness of usage of the words. The observation shows that 1) the contexts of the synonymous pairs cannot replace one another although the meanings of both are the same, and 2) the difference in …

Film Horor Sebuah Definisi Yang Berubah, M. Yoesoef Oct 2003

Film Horor Sebuah Definisi Yang Berubah, M. Yoesoef

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Horror film is a film genre that presents things that are frightening, tense, and horrifying. The idea of horror film is basically to terrorize the audience through various terrifying acts or actors. Horror films in the beginning are closely related to stories rooted in the cultural of Europe, especially English literature. The definition of horror in the beginning was a story that presented uncomfortable feelings to the readers. This definition changed with the development of film. Horror film developed into a genre that came to stand side by side with drama, comedy film, gangster film, and action film.

Intervensi Amerikat Serikat Dalam Perjuangan Kemerdekaan Indonesia, Yuda B. Tangkilisan Oct 2003

Intervensi Amerikat Serikat Dalam Perjuangan Kemerdekaan Indonesia, Yuda B. Tangkilisan

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This research deals with the relation between Indonesia dan the United States of America (US) in the past. Recently the role of the US becomes stronger and dominant in the international scene. The US also interferes into the foreign policy making of a country, like Indonesia. The single super powerm after the dismiss of the Uni-Sovyet following the end of the Cold War, imposed its will to Indonesia to take a part in a war against terrorism after the Tragedy 911. It seems that such a attitude is not something new happening in this era. The intervention already occurred in …

"Jinja" Perusahaan Sebagai Pusat "Shaen", Ike Iswary Lawanda Oct 2003

"Jinja" Perusahaan Sebagai Pusat "Shaen", Ike Iswary Lawanda

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper demonstrates that jinja as the center of shaen functions to remind every worker of the existence of shaen in order to make her feel the power and authority of the sacred being near them, in time and space surrounding them to protect business and maintain security in work. Jinja, owned and founded by the corporation, becomes the symbolic representation of the sacred; worshipped by employees it becomes the site (ba) to conduct corporate ritual (matsuri). The existence of jinja in the Japanese corporation and in the space of production implies the belief of workers that the sacred is …

Realisme Kritis Dalam Myortevye Dushi, Banggas Limbong Oct 2003

Realisme Kritis Dalam Myortevye Dushi, Banggas Limbong

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol is one of Russian writers who played important role in the Golden Age of Russian literature in the XIX century. He created a new writing style called critical realism where reality is represented as bad and negative, with an assumption that people through such representation will attain a new awereness of reality. This paper aims at exploring the idea of concept of critical realism through the examination of the characters in Gogol's works in Dead Souls. An analysis of the characters in Dead Souls reveals an understanding of critical realism. Social critics in these works are presented …

What We Would Have Done Differently Now That It Is Too Late, Louis R. Harlan, Raymond W. Smock Oct 2003

What We Would Have Done Differently Now That It Is Too Late, Louis R. Harlan, Raymond W. Smock

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

We might as well begin on a note of candor by admitting the worst error we ever made, for of all the things that we would have done differently this surely heads the list. On the errata page of volume 8 appears the note: "Volume 4, p. 309, n. 1. The man wrongly identified as Robert Brown Elliott [a black man] was actually William Elliott, a white man. The letter to BTW, Apr. 25,1898, was from Rev. G. M. Elliott of Beaufort, S.C." Not only had we confused a black man with a white man and another black man, but …

The Canons Of Selection, John Y. Simon Oct 2003

The Canons Of Selection, John Y. Simon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Although the article touched on many issues of concern to historical editors, I propose to focus on the scope of documentary editions and to explore the issue of selection of documents for printing, hoping to discover whether this can be analyzed as more than a struggle between editors and government officials eager to distribute federal funds more broadly.

Sotheby's Sale Of John Marshall Letters, Charles F. Hobson Oct 2003

Sotheby's Sale Of John Marshall Letters, Charles F. Hobson

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Recently the John Marshall Papers project accessioned a series of nine autograph letters signed from the chief justice to Bushrod Washington, written between 1814 and 1821. Let me state at the outset that the letters disclose no secret loves, no shady financial dealings, no bizarre personal habits. Candor also obliges me to confess that their discovery was not the result of years of painstaking research, of pursuing leads that brought me ever closer to the trunk in the attic of a decaying Virginia mansion. The story behind the acquisition of the letters is not without interest, however, and even a …

"What Good Are They Anyway?": A User Looks At Documentary Editions Of Statesmen's Papers, Daniel Feller Oct 2003

"What Good Are They Anyway?": A User Looks At Documentary Editions Of Statesmen's Papers, Daniel Feller

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Historical editing has come far in recent years. Editors now have their own organization; they have an ever-stricter set of standards and, as of this year, a handbook codifying those standards. What was once an avocation has become a profession. Yet one cannot overlook that documentary editions have failed to meet some of the expectations first held out for them. The "bloodless revolution in American history" promised us a quarter-century ago from the publication of great statesmen's papers has so far proved not only bloodless but undetectable. Ironically, just as that revolution was being proclaimed, a very different-and far from …

Mary Robinson Hunter: Reminiscences Of Her Life In Brazil, Evelyn M. Cherpak

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

As a Latin Americanist with a specialty in Women's History, I was eager ft to edit a diary kept by an American woman in South America, so I was pleasantly surprised when I called the Newport Historical Society and spoke to the curator of manuscripts who told me that the Mary Robinson Hunter diaries in their collection covered her residence in Brazil fromi 1835 to 1848. I promptly visited the Historical Society, read the journals, found them fascinating, and began my part-time editing project.

The diaries consist of six volumes in which Mary Hunter wrote nearly every day. Each entry, …

"The Most Important Scholarly Work": Reflections On Twenty Years Of Change In Historical Editing, Michael E. Stevens Oct 2003

"The Most Important Scholarly Work": Reflections On Twenty Years Of Change In Historical Editing, Michael E. Stevens

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Twenty years ago, at the first annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing in Princeton, New Jersey, Arthur Link stated that documentary editing is "the most important scholarly work being done in the United States, and, if well done, it will be the most enduring." Last year, the distinguished historian Edmund S. Morgan echoed Link when he wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the 154 volumes produced by the Founding Fathers editions "stand as the single most important achievement of American historical scholarship in this century."

Despite this high praise, Link's and Morgan's opinions are not universally held. …
