From Philadelphia to Lenawee County, Michigan Territory, Remember the Distance that Divides Us offers the correspondence of Elizabeth Margaret Chandler (1807-1834), her family and friends. Remember the Distance is the first publication of Chandler's writing since Benjamin Lundy published her essays and poems in 1836 shortly after her death. An active abolitionist and author, Chandler wrote for the Genius of Universal Emancipation, an early antislavery newspaper edited by Benjamin Lundy. In 1830 Elizabeth, her brother Thomas, and her aunt, Ruth Evans, moved to Michigan territory. The letters begin 12 February 1830, as the three prepare to migrate west. They continue …

"A Perfect & Lawful Right": Review Of To Marry An Indian: The Marriage Of Harriett Gold & Elias Boudinot In Letters, 1823-1839. Edited By Theresa Strouth Gaul., Kathryn M. Wilmot

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

In 1825, the community of Cornwall, Connecticut was in an uproar over the impending marriage of Harriett Gold, the daughter of one of its leading citizens, to Elias Boudinot, member of the Cherokee Indian Nation and former student of the town's assimilation-focused Foreign Mission School. The second white woman in the community to establish a relationship with a Foreign Mission School student, Harriett's determination to marry Elias resulted in an exchange of heated correspondence among her family members. Theresa Strouth Gaul's book, To Marry an Indian: The Marriage of Harriett Gold & Elias Boudinot in Letters, 1823-1839, affords a fascinating …

A New Discovery With Broad Appeal: Review Of The Lewis And Clark Journals: An American Epic Of Discovery. Edited By Gary E. Moulton., Bethany L. Natali

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Gary Moulton writes, "few events in American history are more alive today" than the Lewis and Clark expedition (x). Two hundred years after Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, along with their crew, embarked upon a unique and uncertain journey into the American West, numerous popular and scholarly histories continue to interpret and reinterpret the journey's purpose, meaning, and ultimate impact. Moulton has been closely involved in creating an accurate account of that historical journey, first as an editor of the thirteen-volume work The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and more recently as editor of its one-volume abridgement, The …

Preface: Sound Scripts: A Word From Tura New Music, Tos Mahoney

Sound Scripts

The Inaugural Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference was a bold initiative by its partner presenters Tura New Music and the Faculty of Communications and Creative Industries, Edith Cowan University, Perth, including the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. In an arts milieu which is increasingly becoming “industrialised” and the dollar the bottom line criteria for success, it is reassuring to have the confirmation that there are those—in fact there is a strong cohort—who are dedicated to delving the depths of the meaning of their own and others’ practice.

The Promises And Pitfalls Of Reminiscences As Historical Documents: A Case In Point, Daniel W. Stowell Jan 2005

The Promises And Pitfalls Of Reminiscences As Historical Documents: A Case In Point, Daniel W. Stowell

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

How did Abraham Lincoln get an acquittal for his client Duff Armstrong, on trial for his life in a murder case in 1858? His co-counsel and a prosecution attorney remembered that it was Lincoln's eloquent closing argument that recounted how the accused's parents had been kind to Lincoln when he was a young man, alone and without friends. Another co-counsel was certain that Lincoln's carefully worded jury instructions paved the way for Armstrong's acquittal. The judge recalled that it was a doctor's expert testimony that a blow to the back of the victim's head by someone other than Armstrong was …

Notes--Experiences At The James Iredell Papers, Donna E. Kelly

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

I would like to give you a little background on how I came to be in documentary editing. I've loved history ever since fifth grade. Then in the summer after eighth grade my father and I took a genealogy class. I decided to research my great-great-grandfather, who served as a captain in the Civil War. For the research I went to the State Archives. Once there, I was enamored with it all. On my sixteenth birthday all I wanted to do was to spend the day researching at the Archives in Raleigh. I declared that "I'm gonna work there some …

Ade Treasurer's Report, Fiscal Year, September 1, 2004-August 31, 2005

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing remain sound. In the last fiscal year, there was a decrease in the general budget of $1,544, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $53,756. This is the third consecutive year of decreases, but a large increase from four years ago has continued to provide extra income for continually increasing operating expenses. It is still too early to tell how the dues increase will affect our income. A number of members renewed before the new dues structure took place, but it appears that a number of members did not renew at all. We continue …

Memahami "Cultural Studies" Dan Multikulturalisme Dari Perspektif Pascamodern, Akhyar Yusuf Lubis Oct 2004

Memahami "Cultural Studies" Dan Multikulturalisme Dari Perspektif Pascamodern, Akhyar Yusuf Lubis

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Cultural studies is a study of culture, the paradigm of which is quite different from that of the conventional (i.e. modern) studies. If we accept this view, it means that the whole problem of cultural reality, epistemology, and methodology cannot be used to understand and investigate cultural studies and multiculturalism. The infeasibility of using conventional study of culture to apprehend cultural studies and multiculturalism is related with the principle of incommensurability between those two fields, so there are different worldviews and rules (language games) between the two. This difference is vividly showed in character and model of study that conceives …

Homoseksualitas Dalam Lagu-Lagu Prancis, Joesana Tjahjani

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Sexual revolution in France in the decade of the 1970s is characterized by social openness toward sex. There is a change in the pattern of spousal living, including same-sex relation. Homosexuals in France have the courage to declare their sexual orientation. Despite pros and cons within the French society, PACS or the solidarity civil pact, since 1999, allowed homosexual pairs to formalize their commitment outside marriage. French songs with homosexual themes began to appear in the decade of the 1960s. Since then, around 90 songs foreground homosexuality through various themes and perspectives. In the first reading, the lyrics only foreground …

show that Indonesian and Malaysian literatures grew and developed out of the same old tradition, namely Malay tradition. Indonesian and Malaysian languages are also rooted in the same language, namely, the Malay language. It only makes sense that there a number of similarities This paper discusses the nationalist ideas found in the poems of M. These Malaysians' poems are found in a poetry anthology titled Puisi-puisi Kebangsaan 1913-1957 (nationalist poems 1913-1957) compiled by Abdul Latif Abu Bakar and published in 1987. Based on a …

Perkembangan Lobi Yahudi Dan Pengaruhnya Terhadap Politik Luar Negeri Dan Kongres Amerika Serikat, Agus Setiawan

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

United States' foreign policy has been extremely influenced by some determinant factors both personal and institutional. However, by the end of World War II, an institution known as interest group, played important role relatively to the determination of United States' foreign policies, particularly those which were related to Middle East conflict. A Jewish lobby known as AIPAC (American Israeli Public Affairs Committee) has been the most powerful interest group to influence the United States' foreign policy especially after President Truman's administration. This article describes the internal development of AIPAC and some AIPAC's actions in order to get public supports to …

Pencarian Dasar-Dasar Filosofis Bagi Keberadaan Filsafat Nusantara, Ganang Dwi Kartika Oct 2004

Pencarian Dasar-Dasar Filosofis Bagi Keberadaan Filsafat Nusantara, Ganang Dwi Kartika

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The meaning of philosophy in Indonesian has become an interesting topics, especially when it is related to another concept, culture. Some Indonesian dictionary writers defined "filsafat" (philosophy) in many ways from different aspects. However, the definitions have not reflected the meaning accuracy, both from the linguistic pattern aspect and from its terminology. Besides that, the definitions, which come from Western, invite another question. If there is Western philosophy, then what about Eastern philosophy, especially Nusantara philosophy? That question is also discussed in this writing.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

In the early 1950s, when President Harry S. Truman called upon the scholarly community to undertake the publication of the papers of individuals important to an understanding of American history, Henry Laurens of South Carolina was among the 112 figures recommended. Laurens was not well known to twentieth-century historians outside of South Carolina even though he had held several prestigious appointments on a national level. Indeed, one of the goals of the Laurens Papers was to rescue him from an undeserved obscurity, and it is certain that the superb sixteen volume edition of Laurens's papers, published for the South Carolina …
