The “Almanacks” Of Mary Moody Emerson: A Scholarly Digital Edition, Noelle Baker, Sandra Harbert Petrulionis
The “Almanacks” Of Mary Moody Emerson: A Scholarly Digital Edition, Noelle Baker, Sandra Harbert Petrulionis
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Born in Concord, Massachusetts, on the eve of the American Revolution, Mary Moody Emerson (1774–1863) is most widely known today as the brilliant aunt of American Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882). She was, however, an exciting figure in her own right: a scholar, a theologian, a proto-feminist, and an author whose writings offer a rare and prolific example of early American women’s intellectual production. In 1804, when she was thirty, and again in her seventies, Emerson published a handful of periodical essays. 1 But her most significant literary accomplishment is an unpublished series of manuscript “Almanacks” (c. 1804–1855), a miscellany …
The Construction Of Locative Situations: Locative Media And The Situationist International, Recuperation Or Redux?, Conor Mcgarrigle
The Construction Of Locative Situations: Locative Media And The Situationist International, Recuperation Or Redux?, Conor Mcgarrigle
Articles
A trend exists within locative media art of invoking the practices of the Situationist International (SI) as an art historical and theoretical background to contemporary practices. It is claimed that locative media seeks to re-enchant urban space though the application of locative technologies to develop novel and experimental methods for navigating, exploring and experiencing the city. To this end, SI concepts such as psychogeography and the techniques of detournement and the de ́rive (drift) have exerted considerable influence on locative media practices, but questions arise as to whether this constitutes a valid contemporary appropriation or a recuperative co-option, serving to …
Reading Music: Representing Female Performance In Nineteenth-Century British Piano Method Books And Novels, Laura Vorachek
Reading Music: Representing Female Performance In Nineteenth-Century British Piano Method Books And Novels, Laura Vorachek
English Faculty Publications
The editorial content of piano method books published in the nineteenth century contributed to the gendering of the domestic piano by targeting a middle-class female audience. At the same time, these tutorials circumscribed the ability and ambition of female pianists, cautioning women against technical display or performing challenging pieces in company, thereby reinforcing the stereotype of the graceful, demure woman who played a little. However, this effort was complicated by both the tutorials themselves and contemporary fiction. The middle-class women reading these tutorials also read novels—a fact the method books occasionally acknowledge—which often presented a very different picture of women’s …

Experiencing Women’S History As A Documentary Editor, Ann D. Gordon
Experiencing Women’S History As A Documentary Editor, Ann D. Gordon
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
This is a modest revision of a paper written for a panel on the past and future of historical editing at the annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing in 2008. I thank Esther Katz for reading it in my stead. Richard Leffler edited the original and made valuable recommendations. This list of the women whose papers have received editorial treatment is not an exhaustive one. For Addams, see The Jane Addams Papers [microfilm] , ed. “Dangerous Thoughts”? Margaret Sanger’S World Trip Journal, Japan, 1922, Peter C. Engelman
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Sanger’s longest and, I would argue, most significant piece of travel writing was her 1922 World Trip Journal, which chronicles her six-month tour to discuss birth control in Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Ceylon, with stops in Yemen and Egypt, vacation time on the European continent, and a major conference in London. Coming just a few months after she formed the American Birth Control League in New York, the world tour raised Sanger’s international profile and gave her increased prominence at home, solidifying her leadership of the American movement. My focus in what follows is on the first leg …
An Assessment Of Recent Developments In Historical Editing, Jennifer E. Steenshorne
An Assessment Of Recent Developments In Historical Editing, Jennifer E. Steenshorne
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The American historical editing profession has a rich and varied history of publishing projects ranging from the collected papers of great men and women to diaries of relatively obscure individuals. However, one senses that as the profession enters the twenty-first century, as new technologies appear, and as boundaries between disciplines are blurred, the profession is at a loss as to where to place itself. This article is based on a survey of current projects, both in the United States and internationally, from a variety of disciplines, and in both traditional print and new media. My aim is to broaden our …

Scholarly Editing In A Web 2.0 World: Presidential Address, October 16, 2009, Cathy Moran Hajo
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
How many of you remember when the World Wide Web was new? I remember being thrilled by the things I could do, the information that I could find quickly, and the ability to spread the word about our work. I also remember being unsure how the Web would change the practice of editing. Lately, the design advances and the use of Web technology often described in shorthand as Web 2.0 have made me feel that way again. I am excited about the possibilities, but uncertain about some of the underlying premises of Web 2.0 and what it might mean to …

Review Of The Joseph Smith Papers, Journals, Volume 1: 1832–1839. Edited By Dean C. Jessee, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee, And Richard L. Jensen., Kenneth P. Minkema
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
With the long-anticipated appearance of the first volume of The Joseph Smith Papers, a landmark project in American religious history and in Mormon Studies commences. Containing the scribal and printed remains of the founder and organizer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, The Joseph Smith Papers, when completed, will amount to some thirty-two volumes—a phenomenal undertaking in an age when the magisterial, multi-volume printed edition is an endangered species. Under the general editorship of distinguished historians Dean C. Jessee, Ronald K. Esplin, and Richard Lyman Bushman, the edition is arranged in six series: Journals, Documents, Revelations and …

In Memoriam: W. W. Abbot (1922–2009), Making Something Of Life, Philander D. Chase
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
George Washington, Bill Abbot wrote in his 1989 essay “An Uncommon Awareness of Self,” “saw life as something a person must make something of.” Several years of patiently editing Washington’s pre-Revolutionary papers had left Bill “with the impression of a man driven to master every aspect of his life and to make the most of what life offered.” Anyone who had the privilege of working with Bill Abbot, particularly during his long and distinguished documentary editing career spanning the last third of his life, is left with a similar impression of Bill himself.

Life Service Award Presented To Rich Leffler, John P. Kaminski
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
I have known Rich Leffler for more than forty years. We both came to the University of Wisconsin in 1967 as graduate students in the Department of History. He came from New York and I from Chicago. Rich started to work informally with the Ratification project in 1969–70, when he went to Raleigh, North Carolina, to do research on his dissertation. He searched libraries for the Ratification project, the First Federal Elections project, and the First Federal Congress project. Officially, Rich started to work full time on the project in 1973, first as a researcher, then as assistant editor, associate …
Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender
Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender
Art and Design
My senior project consisted of a large series of paintings on canvas. I created seven large scale paintings (36” x 48” size) which involved minimalism, typography, a “painterly” process, and abstraction. It was a series of explorations in working with my own two (physical) hands, rather than working on a computer as is the standard method of working for graphic designers. These paintings were done in hopes that the series would help me further define my artistic style, accumulate a larger body of work, and possibly discover a new form of painting.
Mycalpoly Redesign Concept, Andrew Santos-Johnson
Mycalpoly Redesign Concept, Andrew Santos-Johnson
Art and Design
For my senior project I developed a conceptual redesign for the Mycalpoly Portal interface. I approached the whole process with the objective of designing a better user experience. The Portal redesign concept began with research on interaction design and user interviews and culminated with screenshots of the final design. The final concept included redesigns for the Mycalpoly login screen, the homepage, custom homepage, an example of extended tab view, and a sample search results page.
The following report includes background information on interaction design, as well as the process I went through to create my redesign for the Mycalpoly Portal.
The Politeness Prosody Of The Javanese Directive Speech, F. X. Rahyono
The Politeness Prosody Of The Javanese Directive Speech, F. X. Rahyono
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This experimental phonetic research deals with the prosodies of directive speech in Javanese. The research procedures were: (1) speech production, (2) acoustic analysis, and (3) perception test. The data investigated are three directive utterances, in the form of statements, commands, and questions. The data were obtained by recording dialogues that present polite as well as impolite speech. Three acoustic experiments were conducted for statements, commands, and questions in directive speech: (1) modifications of duration, (2) modifications of contour, and (3) modifications of fundamental frequency. The result of the subsequent perception tests to 90 stimuli with 24 subjects were analysed statistically …

Potensialitas Dan Keterbatasan Inovasi Morfologis Dalam Bahasa Indonesia; Contoh Kombinasi Afiks "Keter-/-An", Jérôme Samuel
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper examines with a particular affixe (keter-/-an) consisting in two primary affixes. Through the analyse of terms coined by the Pusat Bahasa and spontaneous terms, the paper distinguishes between "double" and "complex" affixation, corresponding to different operating modes of affixation. The first deals with an already affixed and lexicalized word, then reaffixed and relexicalized. The second, almost only found in documents produced by the Pusat Bahasa, refers to a base getting a first affix in a poorly (or not) lexicalized form, constituting no more than a morphological stage towards the wished form, which is intent as lexicalized. Complex affix …
Are Indonesians Sensitive To Contrastive Accentuation Below The Word Level?, Vincent J. Van Heuven
Are Indonesians Sensitive To Contrastive Accentuation Below The Word Level?, Vincent J. Van Heuven
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
It is impossible in Indonesian to express narrow-focus meta-linguistic contrasts on subparts of words (whether meaningless syllables or meaningful morphemes). In English and Dutch this possibility exists, as in I meant coffin not coffer or I said meaningful not meaningless. We predict from this circumstance that Indonesian learners of Dutch will not be sensitive to this type of prosodic contrast marking at the sub-word level. Native Dutch speakers should be able to make functional use of this type of contrast. We conducted an experiment with thirteen Indonesian learners of Dutch with lengths of residence in the Netherlands between 3 weeks …
Dutch Word Stress As Pronounced By Indonesian Students, Lilie M. Roosman
Dutch Word Stress As Pronounced By Indonesian Students, Lilie M. Roosman
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This study focuses on the way in which the Dutch monophthongal vowels are pronounced by Indonesian students. To investigate whether Indonesian students realize the Dutch vowels correctly, especially when they are stressed, I analysed duration and quality of stressed and unstressed Dutch vowels. Measurements were done on the duration and the formant frequencies of the vowels spoken by Indonesian students and by native speakers of Dutch as well. Statistical analysis showed that in general the differences in duration between vowels spoken by the Indonesian students and by the native speakers were not significant. However, the effect of stress on the …

Prominence In Indonesian Stress, Phrases, And Boundaries, Ellen Van Zanten, Rob Goedemans
Prominence In Indonesian Stress, Phrases, And Boundaries, Ellen Van Zanten, Rob Goedemans
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Many (Western) languages have word-based stress, which entails that one, predictable syllable per word is more prominent than all the other syllables in that word. Some linguists claim that such stresses also occur in Indonesian. In this article, we set out to investigate that claim using experimental, phonetic methods. The results confirm our hypothesis that Indonesian lacks word-based stress. Yet, we do observe some kind of prominence pattern. In the last part of this article, we search for the phonological phenomenon that generates this pattern, exploring the level of the phrase to see whether phrasal accents or boundary markers are …

Developing An Orthography For Onya Darat (Western Borneo); Practical And Theoretical Considerations, Uri Tadmor
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Onya Darat is a language spoken, with great dialectal variation, in the interior of western Borneo. It is the southernmost member of Land Dayak, a branch of the Austronesian language family. This article reports on the development of a writing system for Onya Darat. In addition to five vowels and 19 simple consonants, Onya Darat also exhibits three series of complex oral-nasal segments: prenasalized oral stops, preoralized nasals, and postoralized nasals. An analysis of the Onya Darat sound system reveals that of these three series only postoralized nasals are distinctive and therefore need to be represented in the writing system. …

Vygotsky's Socio-Cultural Theory Of Literacy; Scaffolding Children To Read And Write At An Early Age, Mahzan Arshad, Wu Hsueh Chen
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In the article the concept of semiotic mediation, appropriation, internalization, Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffolding in particular were reviewed to provide understanding of the process. Under the concept of semiotic mediation, the issue of how children learn through imitating adults was examined with inputs from second language acquisition theories. Vygotsky's concept of appropriation provides the springboard for a discussion on how children may appropriate the psychological tool of language through modeling and text meditation in the context of second language learning. It is hoped that the understanding of these concepts could lead to more insights in order to …

New Engagements With Documentary Editions: Audiences, Formats, Contexts, Andrew Jewell
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
This paper is an effort to think about something different than the creation of documentary editions. It is an effort to think about the reading of them. Specifically, I want to think about the ways the reading of documentary editions is changing, or how it might change. First, however, a caveat: much of what I say is speculative and anecdotal. Though others’ research has been consulted, I’m heavily influenced by what I observe is happening with readers of my own editing project, The Willa Cather Archive, a digital thematic research collection dedicated to the life, work, and environs of the …

What Is The Optimal Structure For Organisations Representing Design And Designers On The Island Of Ireland?, Barry Sheehan
What Is The Optimal Structure For Organisations Representing Design And Designers On The Island Of Ireland?, Barry Sheehan
Dissertations
The research question addresses the issue of the structure of organisations that represent the interests of design and designers on the island of Ireland. The role of designers in Ireland is seen by society as marginal, rather than one central to the economic, social, and cultural well being of the island and those who live on it. This problem is exacerbated, as the organisational structures of those who play a key part are both confused and confusing. The answer to the question of what is an optimal structure lies in the literature that has been written on the subject and …

Review: Digital Culture, Play And Identity: A World Of Warcraft Reader, Jordan Lieser
Collected Faculty Scholarship
Both the digital and real societies produced by Blizzard's Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft, have received a lot of attention in the relatively new field of game studies. Due to its phenomenal size and cultural significance, the interest World of Warcraft draws is justifiable. The book, Digital Culture, Play, and Identity: A World of Warcraft Reader attempts to dissect the gaming industry's largest MMORPG through a compilation of work consisting of thirteen separate analyses, representing a wide variety of scholars trained with different analytical toolsets. This format was deliberately chosen by the editors, Hilde G. …
