Presentation of Sundanese arts in the US by non-Sundanese grew from a program of the Center for World Music (CWM), an incubator for Sundanese performing arts practice in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1970s. Those (both Sundanese and American) coming out of that encounter engaged in intercultural teaching and performance of music, dance, and wayang (puppet/human dance theatre) in the US in the then developing programs leading to a BA or graduate degree in ethnomusicology, dance, or theatre arts. YouTube was used as a significant platform for public performances around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic, including those given by contemporary and traditional artists and communities. Although this transference of public performance to virtual performance has meant challenges for traditional artists, it has also encouraged them to create new creative media spaces. Instead of confronting digital technology, some traditional artists compromise and negotiate with it. Through an ethnographic account of a performance in Tasikmalaya, West Java, this article describes how traditional artistic forms were preserved through a virtual-based art festival performed by the art community, Komunitas Cermin Tasikmalaya. Reflecting on the evolution of the weekly Sundanese magazine, Manglé, since its establishment in 1957, this article traces the magazine’s vital role in fostering the growth of modern Sundanese writing. For the past 66 years, it has provided a platform for Sundanese writers to showcase their works, with numerous prominent authors gracing its pages. At the peak of its success in 1964, Manglé had a circulation of 70,000 copies, but its circulation has dwindled over time. One of the distinctive features of the Sundanese language is the use of Kecap Anteuran (KA), or verb intensifiers. This linguistic feature often poses challenges when translating Sundanese into foreign languages, particularly European languages. However, we argue that Sundanese KA demonstrates a higher degree of translatability into Japanese, a language that also uses verb intensifiers similar to those found in Sundanese. In Japanese, words analogous to Sundanese KA are categorized as giongo-gitaigo, although the term onomatope is more commonly used. This study aims to identify Sundanese KA based on Tamori’s classification of Japanese onomatopoeia. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach, we …

Since Indonesian independence, the Republic’s Ministry of Religion has steadily become more deeply involved in the overseeing and monitoring of the country’s internally diverse system of Islamic education. This involvement has changed the pedagogical texture of Islamic education. The bureaucratized education system of the modern nation state aims to achieve policy goals such as quality at scale, equality of access, and standardization of curricula and teacher qualifications. In contrast, many Islamic institutions, and especially the pesantren (Islamic boarding school), structure their pedagogy around spiritual and genealogical hierarchies, and maintain teaching methods that affirm those hierarchies. The Sundanese are deeply immersed in Islam, as exemplified by the adage, “to be Sunda is to be Muslim”. An important initiative within this cultural-religious context is the translation of the Quran into low vernacular Sundanese, departing from the formal and codified language forms of the original. Despite concerns about potential textual transgression, this translation negotiates linguistic barriers and reinforces cultural identity within the Islamic framework. Raden Tjandra Pradja’s Wawacan rusiah nu geulis (The verse tale of the secrets of a beautiful woman) which was published in 1921 is a verse narrative of high literary merit. A tale of sexual morality, it is an early example of the realist fiction which was to develop during the first half of the twentieth century in the Sundanese language of West Java. Ajip authored over 300 works spanning diverse genres, making significant contributions to literature and the preservation of cultural heritage. The article examines his ambivalence or restlessness (kegelisahan) regarding the tension between regional and national identities in literature, as exemplified in his reflections and creative output. Yus R. Ismail is a prolific Sundanese short story writer whose stories regularly appear in Sundanese journals and newspapers. This story “Assalamualaikum…“ appeared in Pikiran Rakyat in August 2023. It is a characteristic story of his in that it takes as its starting point the everyday lives of Sundanese villagers, and yet at the same time creates an aura of mystery around their activities. This project employs Roland Barthes' narrative codes as a framework for textual analysis to examine the underlying structures and meanings within song lyrics from two contrasting traditions of country music: mass-mediated Nashville country and Texas Red Dirt. With a sample spanning a five-year period, the study explores how narrative forms reflect broader socio-cultural dynamics and economic forces. Drawing upon the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, particularly the works of Theodor Adorno and Karl Marx, the project concentrates on the commodification of cultural products and implications for authenticity and truth in cultural expression. In this article, I draw on Frederick Luis Aldama’s framework of Graphic Indigeneity to revisit the long history of an Indigenous hero figure in comics: Turok, a pre-Columbian Mandan warrior lost in a prehistoric space known as the Lost Valley. First appearing in Dell’s Four Color Comics #596 (1954), Turok has appeared throughout comics history for nearly 70 years, primarily written and drawn by white creative teams, yet a visually, narratively prominent Indigenous hero in the comics page, one who has periodically been a top-selling popular character in the comics industry. This study focuses on evaluating the capabilities of Instagram translation feature in translating Arabic Islamic poetry, a literary genre rich in linguistic nuances and cultural context. Employing a qualitative methodology, this research conducts a comprehensive comparative analysis between the automatic translations produced by Instagram and manual translations done by experts. The findings reveal that, despite being useful, Instagram's translation feature often fails to fully capture the essence of Arabic Islamic poetry, with significant errors in understanding context and language nuances. Spatial and temporal motifs predominate throughout the extensive corpus of Arabic prison writing. However, far from establishing the prison as an exceptional space, and periods of imprisonment as “time outside time,” this paper argues that modern Arabic prison literature tends instead to blur the distinction between “inside” and “outside” prison space and time. In place of a rigid spatial demarcation, dramatically exemplified by images of towering, razor wire-tipped walls, Arabic prison writing consistently seeks to create continuity between the punishment meted out to those within the prison’s walls and the repression endured by those beyond it. Scholarship about Muslims in prison has been overwhelmingly dominated by security studies’ radicalization thesis and by a superficial reading of incarcerated Muslims’ “religious resilience.” Such approaches caricature the force of Islam in prison and indeed in Muslim prison narratives. This essay draws on interviews with survivors of prisons in Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Syria in order to develop other terms for analysis. Across our textual and ethnographic engagements, we read for varied permutations of carceral space, formations of religious authority, and an intimate (witnessing) relation between speech and violence. This article argues for a new reading of collectivity – in both narrative voice and scenes of shared experience – in works of Syrian prison literature. Although these texts were published and are interpreted as the products of single author figures, the wider narrative field from which they emerge is shaped by numerous collective practices, from the oral and written to the digital.
