Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a pivotal force in modern society, significantly impacting various sectors, including academia. This paper examines the broad implications of AI, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), and their transformative potential across educational institutions. The San Jose State University's iSchool is highlighted as a case study, demonstrating its proactive approach to integrating nascent technologies and revising curriculum competencies to address AI's influence. As AI reshapes library and information science (LIS) education, the development of new competencies, such as data privacy and ethical AI use, becomes essential. Furthermore, the ethical and societal implications of AI, including potential …

Assembling A Queer Exhibition: A Phenomenological Case Study Of Exhibition Team Members And Their Interpretation Of Material In An Lgbtq+ Exhibit, Ethan Wojciechowski
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Recently, exhibitions highlighting LGBTQ+ history, art, and culture are becoming increasingly popular. Consequently, museum workers are routinely engaged with material directly attributed to the LGBTQ+ community. This study utilizes a two-pronged qualitative approach of a phenomenological case study to examine how members of exhibition teams interpret queer materials within the exhibit and in the context of their own expressed identities. Data collection involved surveys and interviews, and employed a textual analysis of the survey responses and interview transcripts to identify key themes in the dataset. Consequently, the findings revealed that exhibition team members focused on Intersectionality, Activism, and Geography when …
The Statues Died, But Their Legacies Live: A Discourse Analysis Of The Debate Surrounding Museums And Confederate Monuments, Laila Maria Melhem
The Statues Died, But Their Legacies Live: A Discourse Analysis Of The Debate Surrounding Museums And Confederate Monuments, Laila Maria Melhem
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
In the United States, conversations about what should be done with Confederate monuments often invoke museums as a solution to dealing with them after their removal, whether that be through protest or planned action. Using discourse analysis, this study considered public and professional perceptions regarding the role of museums in the debate over Confederate monuments to highlight how the public contributes to the discourse surrounding this controversial topic. This thesis analyzed discourse from the American Alliance of Museums, the New York Times, and the Richmond Times-Dispatch that was published between May 2020 and May 2023 and revealed three dominant themes: …

Creating Virtual 3d Artifacts For The Clinton Presidential Library And Museum, Jackelyn Raquel Cordova Romano
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis project is to create virtual 3D artifacts for the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum for use in their e-museum website to aid museum accessibility of objects. These 3D artifacts will be used by the Clinton Museum for their webpage and the artifacts were modeled carefully to appear as close as possible to the objects chosen by the museum team. As an institution part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the limited access of objects due to the sheer size of the collection creates a problem with the institution’s mission of providing access to …

“Everybody Loves A Conjurer:” The Fake Artworks Of Elmyr De Hory (1906-1976) And Their Consequences On The Art World, Caroline Grinstead
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Art institutions such as museums, galleries, and auction houses have for many years been characterized as reliable and trustworthy. The act of art forgery threatens this integrity and causes these institutions to rethink how they acquire artworks. My research focuses on a specific art forger, Elmyr de Hory, who became notorious for being able to reproduce works in the style of notable artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani. By successfully selling his forgeries to multiple museums and galleries, only to be discovered later, de Hory forced institutions to reconstruct their approaches in authenticating and acquiring works of art. As …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an investigation into the Peruvian pre-Columbian collection at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. The Speed Art Museum acquired this collection in 1934 and it has largely remained unresearched for nearly a century after acquisition into the museum’s collection. This investigation is not an attempt to make broad characterizations of pre-Columbian ceramics. Nor is its goal to fill in all the gaps of the collection’s history. Instead, this thesis follows the evidence the collection presents: the physical attributes of the ceramics, the donor’s history, U.S. history, and information from the collection file provided by the Speed …

From November 4th to 11th, 2023, The Saint John's Bible Gallery Team celebrated the 25th anniversary of the commissioning of the Saint John's Bible by undergoing a pilgrimage through some of the most prominent Anglican institutions in the United Kingdom. On the evening of November 7th (my birthday) I attended the Anniversary Dinner Celebration and shared my valuable experiences as a student intern at the Saint John's Bible Gallery with my fellow attendees. Attending this special event allowed me the opportunity to connect and network with professionals in the gallery and museum industry, which is what I would like to …

Shifting Approaches, Innovative Methods: Collection Histories As A Tool To Move Beyond William Fagg’S ‘Lower Niger Bronze Industry Mystery’, Imogen Coulson, Julie Hudson, Sam Nixon
Artl@s Bulletin
At the end of 2019, the British Museum launched a new research project focusing on copper alloy objects associated with the Lower Niger Bronze Industry. The aim was to increase knowledge of these objects through a combination of provenance and collection history research and scientific analysis. This paper will outline the earlier art historical-focused approach to the Lower Niger Bronzes corpus and will then describe the new research and its methodology. Initial findings will be presented through a case study of objects from the Forcados River in the Niger Delta region of present-day Nigeria. In doing so, we aim to …

Making Absences Present: The Process Of Visualizing Knowledge Production In Museum Records, Caitlin Glosser
Artl@s Bulletin
In this paper, I evaluate the development of data visualizations as an art historical approach. By visualizing data for Senufo-labeled objects in the Musée Africain de Lyon’s collection, I demonstrate how the museum’s knowledge infrastructure privileges European collectors over African makers. I use Tableau visualizations to decenter this narrative by making silences present in a more impactful manner than through text alone. The visualizations also reveal the complex role that one maker, Bèma Coulibaly, played in the life of the collection. The addition of the individual narrative to the data was necessary to bring a human element into view.

Museums Making Change (And Proving It!): A Case Study Developing Evaluation Plans For The Fitchburg Art Museum’S Development Department, Elizabeth Rozmanith
School of Professional Studies
The Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) in Fitchburg, MA has a new 2024-2028 strategic plan outlining the organization’s goals and actions for the next four years. However, the museum does not have sufficient evaluation methods in place to measure the effects of these actions. To resolve this issue, this case study proposes an evaluation plan for the museum’s Development department that can be used to assess their operations in the following areas: visitor services, membership and events, marketing, and funding/donor relations. In particular, the Development department’s goal for this project was to better understand their stakeholders, including their motivations, values, and …

Presentation Of Culture: Framing History In Us And Italian Museums, Fiona G. Cheyney
Student Publications
National legacies drastically impact museum work and archaeological ethical practices in the US and Italy. My research question asks, to what extent and how are ethical considerations of museum professionals shaped by nationalism and evolving perceptions of how museums should serve the public in these two different national contexts? Data collected from semi-structured interviews with academics in the field reflects that museums must be transparent about the history of the topics exhibited and their methodological practices; this is supported by many findings suggested in previous scholarship (Garoian 2001; Gazi 2014; Falcucci 2021). Particular moments in US and Italian national histories, …

Cross-Institutional Collaboration And Exhibit Making: “On The Gold Mountain: Chinese Mining History And Heritage Of Idaho” At The Idaho Museum Of Mining And Geology, Jordan Kathleen Bennett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Gold Rush, which brought many new immigrant communities to the American West, made a permanent impact on American culture by prompting the development of many Western towns. However, the Chinese immigrant mining population in the Boise, Idaho area has had little museum representation despite the more than 300,000 Chinese people who emigrated to the US between the 1840s and 1880. To rectify this, the Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology (IMMG), in collaboration with members of the Payette National Forest, the Asian American Comparative Collection, Boise State University/US Army Corps of Engineers, and the University of Denver, developed an …

International Review of Humanities Studies
Indonesia has been chosen to host the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022. Indonesia has prepared many agendas ahead of the execution of this summit. This preparation concerns the technical implementation of multilateral relations, which have undergone significant changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, Indonesia needs help hosting the G20 due to the fractured multilateral relations of several G20 member countries caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict in early 2022. As a result, Indonesia must mediate between the disputing parties to resolve this issue by selecting appropriate communication methods. Cultural diplomacy is one approach. Cultural diplomacy is a non-coercive …

International Review of Humanities Studies
This research delves into the extensive lexicon of the Javanese language, specifically focusing on expressions related to feelings of love. The presence of multiple Javanese lexicons denoting love poses a significant challenge, prompting the central question: What are the semantic nuances that distinguish each lexicon, given the absence of absolute synonyms? The research aims to elucidate the semantic fields that differentiate each love-related lexicon in Javanese. Data for this research is drawn from four distinct Javanese dictionaries, spanning various publication periods. Additionally, the study incorporates diverse data sources, including a book titled "Antologi Cerita Pendek Bahasa Jawa di Yogyakarta …

The Manifestation Of Misogyny In The Pick Me Boy Trend On Tiktok Indonesia, Ying Wang, Mina Elfira
International Review of Humanities Studies
Misogyny is hatred, contempt, or prejudice against women or girls. It is a form of sexism used to keep women in a lower social status than men, thereby maintaining patriarchal social roles. Hegemonic masculinity is the most exalted configuration of gender practices that legitimizes patriarchy. This article draws on the framework of Raewyn Connell's theory of masculinity and Kate Manne's concept of misogyny to discuss the phenomenon of Indonesian TikTok videos with the hashtag “Pick Me Boy” or #Pick Me Boy. Pick Me Boy challenge traditional masculinity to gain women's attention, and then demean women if rejected. This article uses …

Absent But Present: Propaganda Strategies Of The Japanese Occupation In Indonesia As Narrated In Kamishibai In Djawa Baroe Magazine, Rouli Esther Pasaribu
International Review of Humanities Studies
This paper investigated the propaganda strategies in kamishibai (a paper play) story telling in Djawa Baroe Magazine. This study employed text analysis methods and propaganda theories from Jowett and Donnell on the seven kamishibai and found the following propaganda strategies. First, Western powers were portrayed negatively. Second, Japan was not explicitly featured in kamishibai stories. Third, local cultural elements in Javanese culture were used to convey propaganda messages. These findings indicate that entertainment media, such as kamishibai, can be used as propaganda media and subtly inserted using specific trivial strategies.

The Yogyakarta Palace is one of the Islamic sultanates that still exists in Indonesia. Even though the Yogyakarta Palace has an Islamic style and has been influenced by modernization which has penetrated aspects of state and society, the embodiment of the God-King concept from ancient Hindu eras remains embedded in the power of the king, state life, and the obedience of the surrounding community to the palace system. This paper has a problem regarding how to apply the concept of politics and power in the Yogyakarta Palace. A historical approach is used to reveal the meaning of the palace in …
