Building Empathy And Unveiling Reality: The Role Of Metaphor And Simile In Max Havelaar, Barbara Elisabeth Lucia Pesulima
International Review of Humanities Studies
In Indonesia Multatuli's Max Havelaar is regarded as a powerful indictment of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia. Extensive research has explored the novel's historical context, social critique, and its influence on Indonesian nationalism, but less attention has been paid to the literary devices that give the novel its enduring emotional power. This paper fills this gap by examining how metaphor and simile presented in the dialogs found in the novel function as key instruments in shaping the reader's experience. Existing studies of Max Havelaar often delve into the novel's historical background, its scathing critique of Dutch colonial practices, and its role …

'We Only Want To Plant Oil Palm": An Ethnohistory Of Illegal Peasant’S Oil Palm Plantations In Muaro Jambi, Jambi Province, Indonesia, Yudi Bachrioktora
International Review of Humanities Studies
The increasing global demand for vegetable oils and biofuels is a determining factor in increasing oil palm expansion in Indonesia. The current studies of Indonesia's oil palm expansion focus on companies' large-scale land acquisition. In this process, often called land grabbing, small peasants are excluded from the acceleration of oil palm expansion. This research focuses on the rarely discussed topic of the participation of small peasants in the palm oil production chain. Employing ethnohistory, this research unfolds the impact of oil palm expansion on small peasants and indigenous people, especially those who expand their plantations into the forest in Jambi …

Segundo Congreso Internacional De Iconografía Precolombina, 2023. Actas, Victòria Solanilla Demestre
Zea E-Books Collection

Please Don’T Break: Best Practices For Digitizing And Archiving Glass Plate Photographs, Ariel Hammond, Noelle Zocco, Alejandra Tomeo, Diego Jimenez
Journal of Western Archives
Glass plate photographs, taken primarily between 1860-1930, were meant to document and preserve imagery, however, these photographs developed directly on glass are increasingly prone to destruction. With recent advances in imaging techniques, metadata, and collections care, the preservation of glass photography has evolved. This paper is a snapshot of the current best practices for preserving, digitizing, and storing glass plate and lantern slide photographs. It also features a case study from the San Diego Natural History Museum Library & Archives, which digitized a collection of 2,000+ glass photographs depicting the earliest images of flora and fauna in San Diego County, …
Uncovering Over 150 Years Of Herbarium Specimen Data To Examine The Impacts Of Climate Change On Alpine Plant Phenology In The Southern Rocky Mountains, Erin Berkowitz
Museum Studies Theses
Due to generalized botanical collecting practices, herbarium specimens provide important long term data dating back hundreds of years. The historical data preserved in herbaria can be used to study biological responses to climate change, such as changes in plant phenology, across various habitats including understudied alpine ecosystems. This study will use historical data from over one hundred years of plant collecting, along with updated collecting and community science efforts, to investigate how climate change is influencing alpine plant phenology in the Southern Rocky Mountains. These records will be analyzed alongside historical climate data to explore phenological sensitivities to climate change, …

Recomposing Museums: Designing Rhythmic Experiences For Short Attention Spans In The Digital Age, Yujiang Wu
Recomposing Museums: Designing Rhythmic Experiences For Short Attention Spans In The Digital Age, Yujiang Wu
Masters Theses
Learning, being the primary aspiration of museums, “is a byproduct of attention.”1 A visitor’s ability to focus and sustain attention on the objects, narratives, and messages within the exhibition environment profoundly influences their overall experience and the educational impact of their visit.
In an era of rapid digital evolution, changes in how information is consumed and communicated have led to shorter attention spans. Traditional museums, which are rooted in continuous, linear storytelling, now face a need for adaptation. This thesis advocates for an innovative exhibition design approach tailored to the realities of shorter attention spans, proposing curatorial and design …

Strategies In Time-Based Media Conservation: An Evaluation Of Three Institutional Approaches, Mya Vander Pol
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
Time-based media (TBM) is a category of art in which the works rely on the passage of time and often the integration of technology to convey their artistic concepts and narratives. It encompasses various artistic expressions, including video installations, sound art, performance, and interactive digital works. This diverse array of mediums present distinct challenges to institutions responsible for their storage, preservation, and accessibility. The rapid evolution of technology and the inherent fragility of the media formats make the proper management of time-based media art equipment a critical concern. This paper examines three case studies of time-based media artworks from the …
