Most of us have stored some favorite songs in our memory banks. We have associated certain words of songs with particular moments in our lives: romances, tragedies, departures, breakups, or events that we could never fully re-experience without recalling those particular songs. When we remember a song, or hear a song that transports us back to our pasts, our lives become enriched with that personal and intimate sense of continuity.

Diana Garner was a student at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana when she began to write to soldiers stationed in Vietnam during 1968-1969. A friend encouraged her to place her name in the Sea Tiger, a magazine published by the military. Diana began receiving letters from the soldiers shortly after placing her address in the magazine. She continued to write to a few of the soldiers for some time but eventually lost contact with all of her soldier pen-pals. The letters mostly focus on the mundane activities in the life of a soldier but occasionally glimpses of the fear …

Emma Chenault Kelly is a distinguished woman. She graduated from Eastern Illinois State Teachers High School in 1923 and continued her education at Eastern earning a two-year teaching certificate. She then went on to receive a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky, a master's degree form Columbia University and a doctorate in education from New York University. In the 1940s, she joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC), and, by 1992, she published a book containing her letters and newspaper articles from WWII.

Symmetry And Symmetry-Breaking: An Approach To Understanding Beauty, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Considering the relationship of symmetry and beauty, the author examines three textiles from the collection of Doris Duke at Shangri La in Honolulu. Referring to abstract expressionism of the 20th century as antithetical to symmetry, and the Arts & Crafts Movement of the 19th century as countering the insistency of industrial mass production, Bier explores the relative roles of symmetry and symmetry-breaking in the construction of three embroideries (called suzani, after the Persian and Tajik word for “needlework”), using as her point of departure a recent research initiative, the Shangri La Suzani Project. It may very well be easier to learn rather than to unlearn. Modes of learning quickly become habit forming; habits tend to become deeply ingrained and die hard. In the visual art world the roles that curator and viewer play can become routine and effectively cloud one's aesthetic vision like so much residue on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Reorienting the viewer's visual experience and taming the curator's heavy hand are among the aims of Barbara Kendrick and Timothy van Laar in Losing the Instructions, a two person installation at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska. …
