History At The Madrasas, Nita Kumar Jan 2002

History At The Madrasas, Nita Kumar

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Madrasas: In the archival records of the British colonial state, as well as in the private records of members of the Indian intelligentsia, the indigenous school of North India is referred to by the generic term 'madrasa'. There is no exclusive implication of this institution as Islamic. This is close to the literal meaning of 'madrasa' which is 'the place of dars': dars being teaching, instruction, a lesson, or lecture.

Exclusive Liberation And Lesbian Suicide In Interwar Japan, Scott Reynen '02 Jan 2002

Exclusive Liberation And Lesbian Suicide In Interwar Japan, Scott Reynen '02

Honors Projects, History

There were 342 cases of "female same-sex double (or 'love') suicide" reported in the Japanese daily press between 1925 and 1935 (Komine 1985, 175). Assuming unreported and individual cases, the actual sum of lesbian suicides during this period was probably much higher than twice this number. Still, only these recorded lesbian double suicides constituted about thirty-one percent of all suicides in Japan during this time period (Komine 1985, 174-5). The disproportionately high rate of suicide among lesbians in interwar Japan is an indication of widespread exclusion of lesbians from the major social and economic trends during this time.

Interpreting Early Modern Woman Abuse: The Case Of Anne Dormer, Mary O'Connor

Quidditas

[T]hese hard laws I live under must keepe us from seeing one another.

Anne Dormer

When Anne Dormer, of Rousham, Oxfordshire, wrote to her sister, Elizabeth Trumbull, in August 1686, she complained that she would not be able to greet her on her return from a tumultuous year in France. Elizabeth (sometimes called Katherine) was married to the special envoy William Trumbull and had just endured the events of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Anne’s husband, Robert Dormer, had certain “laws” under which his wife had to live, one of which prohibited her from going to London to …

The Fall Of Troy And The Rise Of Elizabethan Drama: Empowering The Audience, Charles Whitney Jan 2002

The Fall Of Troy And The Rise Of Elizabethan Drama: Empowering The Audience, Charles Whitney

Quidditas

The English Reformation, along with urbanization, commercial development, and other major social and cultural changes, both reflect and affect a multifaceted contestation of authority among genres and modes of discourse in the sixteenth century. Robert Weimann finds the Elizabethan period marked by clashes “between diverse authorities engaging in rivalry for the more persuasive image, logic, truth, and form of saying things,” as “the claims on God-given legitimacy of secular and ecclesiastical institutions...were irretrievably undermined.” Rather than accept the authority of a document, according to its type and status, before it was actually read, audiences tended to approach representations as sites …

The Crucible Of Flight, Adrian Kinnane Jan 2002

The Crucible Of Flight, Adrian Kinnane

Local and Rare Books

Adrian Kinnane’s unpublished manuscript “The Crucible of Flight” is an in depth look at what outside influences helped the Wright Brothers become the first to be successful in the quest for flight. Kinnane considers that the difference between them and their competitor/colleagues may well have been the difference that crowned them ultimately with success. His main focus is the familial and personal forces that set the Wrights apart. He studies the Wright family bond, the friendly and adversarial ties the Wrights developed outside the family bond, and the fraternal bond between Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Bioregionalism And The History Of Place, William L. Lang Jan 2002

Bioregionalism And The History Of Place, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduces a forum on bioregionalism and historiography, a concept that goes beyond the sense of place to include region in a natural rather than a political sense. Examples include watersheds, landscapes, and expectations from nature. The concept, which surfaced in the 1970's, is a dynamic one that links physical nature and how humans understand it.

Glimpsing Medusa: Astoned In The Troilus, Timothy D. O'Brien Jan 2002

Glimpsing Medusa: Astoned In The Troilus, Timothy D. O'Brien

Quidditas

In these pages I would like to consider the role of Medusa in Chaucer's Troilus—a modest enough enterprise except for the fact that there is not a single reference to this puzzling figure in the entire work, or in any of Chaucer’s other works for that matter. Such an absence does not of course mean absence of influence. After all, Chaucer does not mention Boccaccio, even though his Il Filostrato supplies the narrative material for and fundamental shape of the Troilus. Obscuring authorial indebtedness because of some “anxiety of influence” is one thing; alluding to a figure from …

Re-Inventing Cultural Heritage: Palestinian Traditional Costume And Embroidery Since 1948, Jeni Allenby Jan 2002

Re-Inventing Cultural Heritage: Palestinian Traditional Costume And Embroidery Since 1948, Jeni Allenby

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Prior to 1948, when the State of Israel was declared, Arab society in Palestine consisted of three main groups - the townspeople, a small percentage of nomadic or semi-nomadic bedouin tribes, and the villagers or "people of the land" who made up three quarters of the population. Over eight hundred villages were scattered from the coastal plains to the Jordan River. While costume in the urban regions historically reflected the current occupiers of the country (for example, Turkish styles during the Ottoman period, and European fashions under the British Mandate) Palestine's many villages were economically and socially independent, and difficulties …

Introduction To Reverend Thomas Barton's Letter Of November 8, 1756 And Forbes Expedition Journal Of 1758, James P. Myers Jr.

Adams County History

When western York county became Adams county in the year 1800, the area already possessed something of a recorded history reaching back into the late 1730s. Principally in the form of documents relating to administrative, legal, and land-claim issues, these official papers provide us today with valuable evidence of the county's early settlers-who came, when they arrived, where they settled, and occasionally how they got along, or did not get along, with one another and with the colonial Penn government, and later with that of the new state erected during the Revolution. In its earliest period, these documents offer insight …

Holland's Informants: The Construction Of Josiah Holland's 'Life Of Abraham Lincoln', Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

Abraham Lincoln's coffin had lain in the receiving vault in Springfield's Oak Ridge Cemetery for less than three weeks when a dapper, walrus-mustachioed New Englander stepped off the train and checked into Springfield's St. Nicholas Hotel. He was Josiah Gilbert Holland, one-time editor (and still part owner) of the Springfield, Massachusetts, Republican, a nationally popular writer of advice books, and (what would turn out to be most memorably) part of a small circle of admirers and encouragers of an unknown Amherst poet named Emily Dickinson. None of those attributes, however, provided the slightest qualification for the task that brought …
