The Cursed All-Star Game In Milwaukee: Bud Lite Makes The Bad Worse, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

From the beginning the omens were bad. At the home run hitting contest Sammy Sosa ran out of gas in round three and could only get one out of the park. Then it started raining and for a brief moment ESPN showed that beautiful waterfall coming off the roof. Was this part of the construction flaw at the brand new Miller Park, Bud Selig's monument to himself extorted from the people of Wisconsin?

Gay Bars, Vice, And Reform In Portland, 1948-1965, Beka Smith Jul 2002

Gay Bars, Vice, And Reform In Portland, 1948-1965, Beka Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The city of Portland adopted different policies toward gay bars between 1948 and 1965. Portland's conservative mayors, generally uninterested in changing the city or promoting growth, ignored gay bars. Reform mayors instigated campaigns against gay bars to gain public, political, and business support for their broader economic and social goals. Blaming Portland's vice on outsiders, reform mayors argued that their actions protected …

Popular Media

The defeat of Nazi Germany brought to the forefront a problem the Allies had been grappling with for years -- what should be done with the Nazi leaders who had not been killed, committed suicide, or escaped into hiding? The Allies agreed that the top Nazi leadership could not allowed their liberty. But beyond that the Allies were in sharp disagreement. Some wanted to summarily execute the Nazi leadership without further ado. Others wanted to place the Nazi leaders on trial and punish them only if convicted. On August 8, 1945 the four principal Allies -- the United States, the …

"More Love And More Desire": A History Of The Brazil Lesbian, Gay, And Transgendered Movement, James N. Green

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

According to this widely held idea, the emergence of gay and lesbian groups was slower in "Third World countries" because of authoritarian regimes, patriarchal social structures, and backward societies.
