Larry Doby: A Study In Racial Integration, Jeffrey Heber Cluff

Journal of Undergraduate Research

0n July 5, 194 7, a young, left-handed batter stepped to the plate at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. Runners were on first and third with one out in the top of the seventh inning. The Cleveland Indians trailed the Chicago White Sox 5-l as the 22-year-old from Patterson, New Jersey settled into the batter’s box. Five pitches and a strikeout later he strode back to the dugout to a loud round of applause.

Provo, Utah During The Roaring Twenties, Chelsea Schofield, Dr. Brian Cannon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I began my paper, I searched past General Conference talks to discover instruction given to members of the LDS church by their leaders through the moral decay of the 1920’s. I concluded that the issue of morality and moral decay raised great concern among the brethren of the church. Upholding these laws and living in accordance to these moral principles is stressed today, just as it was in the 1920’s.

Tales From A Boston Customs House: Recovering From Trauma, S. Marianne Johnson Feb 2014

Tales From A Boston Customs House: Recovering From Trauma, S. Marianne Johnson

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

After losing both arms in a gunnery accident aboard the USS Rhode Island in 1863 and being told he would not live, Medal of Honor recipient Lewis Horton resolved that he would recover and be with his family again soon. The double amputation, completed within an hour of the accident, was successful, but Horton lost a significant amount of blood and could merely wait and hope. Eighty days after amputation, the ligatures — cords left in the limb to hold arteries closed until they had sufficiently healed — were removed, and healing commenced quickly. Shortly after, he was discharged and …

"A Home For Poets": The Emergence Of A Liberal Curriculum For Elementary Teachers In Victorian Britain, Christopher Bischof Feb 2014

"A Home For Poets": The Emergence Of A Liberal Curriculum For Elementary Teachers In Victorian Britain, Christopher Bischof

History Faculty Publications

In this article I explore student culture beyond the classroom to argue that there existed an informal liberal curriculum which embraced a general spirit of intellectualism and the pursuit of a wide range of knowledge dealing with the human condition and the state of society. I also offer a new reading of the formal curriculum at training colleges by examining the formal curriculum alongside student accounts of their experiences of it, student responses to assignments, commonly used textbooks, and educationalists’ discourses about teachers’ training. While acknowledging that the formal curriculum emphasized rote memorization and was narrow, I argue that there …

Annotated Listing Of Materials On Denmark In The Harold B. Lee Lmrary, Leland Harrison Feb 2014

Annotated Listing Of Materials On Denmark In The Harold B. Lee Lmrary, Leland Harrison

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This particular project’s goal was to list all materials on Denmark located in the Harold B. Lee Library. The primary focus was the works about Danish history, no matter what language they were published in. The scope of the project changed to all Scandinavian books and periodicals located in the central and northern sections of the fourth floor in the library. This was highly appropriate, since most of the materials refer to Denmark and due to the magnitude of materials to be processed. The library’s collection of Scandinavian materials in the library exceeds that of other local universities, but it …

Russian Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 2014

Russian Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

With the Winter Olympics finally underway is it possible that the American journalists, if we can use that term in these circumstances, will be able to write about something other than the failure of Russia to be the United States? Having traveled to Russia multiple times since the collapse of the Soviet Union, I have witnessed the remarkable transformation of this society. Caught in a time warp created by the failure of the Soviet Union, the standard of living of the average Russian trailed behind that of most of Western Europe and the United States. The Soviet Union was not …

Theater Of War: Booth And Beyond, Valerie N. Merlina Feb 2014

Theater Of War: Booth And Beyond, Valerie N. Merlina

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Lastly, we come upon perhaps the best known actor of the Civil War era, John Wilkes Booth. Of course, the reason memory allows us to recall the name is not because of the merits achieved through his profession, but rather because he murdered the elected executive official – United States President Abraham Lincoln. Booth, a product of a theater family, was a dramatic, eccentric, and impatient being. He wanted the leading roles, did not want to prepare the role, but to simply play the role. His brother, Edwin Booth, a talented poetical performer, one might deduce, did prepare for his …

Syria And The Olympics: National Identity On An International Stage, Andrea L. Stanton Feb 2014

Syria And The Olympics: National Identity On An International Stage, Andrea L. Stanton

Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

Since its 1946 independence, Syria has fielded a team for every summer Olympic competition except 1956, yet has won only three Olympic medals. In contrast with its smaller, higher-powered neighbor Lebanon, its participation at the Olympics has been consistent but limited, with the country making little impact internationally. Yet the history of Syria’s involvement with the Olympics reflects key elements of its political and social history: its ambitious but short-lived partnership with Egypt, the Baathist-supported promotion of women as athletes and head of the National Olympic Committee, and its commitment to participation in the vexed but ideologically important Pan-Arab Games. …
