Notation And Memorandum: Special Artists And Their Portrayal Of The American Civil War, Bryan G. Caswell Mar 2014

Notation And Memorandum: Special Artists And Their Portrayal Of The American Civil War, Bryan G. Caswell

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

As the first war to see the extensive use of photography, the American Civil War was brought home to civilians in hundreds of photographs portraying camp life or the aftermath of battles. Due to the nature of nineteenth century photography as well as safety concerns, however, photographers were not able to capture scenes of actual combat for their viewers. This task fell instead to men known as Special Artists or “Specials,” hired by the illustrated periodicals of the day to travel with the armies and sketch all manner of events associated with the military, including battles as they progressed. "Die Mauer Im Kopf": Aesthetic Resistance Against West-German Take-Over, Arwen Puteri Mar 2014

"Die Mauer Im Kopf": Aesthetic Resistance Against West-German Take-Over, Arwen Puteri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Even 24 years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, modern day Germans are still preoccupied with the contentious dynamics of the post-Wall unification process. Concern with geo-political fractiousness is deeply rooted in German history and the reason for Germany's desire to become a unified nation. The Fall of the Wall, and the subsequent rejection of socialism, was a chance to recover and unify what was perceived to be an "incomplete" nation. Yet, despite these actions, social unity between East and West Germans has never occurred and the Wall still persists as a metaphorical barrier in the minds of German …

Long Hours Lasting Consequences: Children As Passive Victims In The Industrial Revolution And A Pivitol Part Of Reform, Hannah Myers Mar 2014

Long Hours Lasting Consequences: Children As Passive Victims In The Industrial Revolution And A Pivitol Part Of Reform, Hannah Myers

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The British Industrial Revolution has been studied extensively. Leading scholars of the past and present include, but are not limited to, Getrude Himmelfarb, E.P. Thompson, Sonya O. Rose, Mary Poovey, Troy Boone, Friedrich Engles, Oliver Hamlin, Hugh D. Hindman, and George Dodd. Each focused on different aspects of the experience, which range from the economy, to family roles, including definitions of childhood and gender roles, to education, Victorian values, working conditions, and even slavery. The reason for such a diversity of approaches was clearly explained by Joel Mokyr, who argued: . . . [T]he Industrial Revolution illustrates the limitations of …

Public Space And British Colonial Power : The Transformation Of Hong Kong Statue Square, 1890s-1970s, Wing Sze Tam

Lingnan Theses

This thesis analyzes the relationship between public space and government legitimacy through the emergence and transformation of Hong Kong Statue Square. It explains the colonial government’s construction of Statue Square in 1896 as a symbolic place to establish her legitimacy and present her imperial power. The construction of Statue Square also shows the mutually beneficial relationship between the colonial government and the foreign merchants in Hong Kong, especially Sir Catchick Paul Chater, who put great effort into the Praya Reclamation Scheme that made the establishment of Statue Square possible. By demonstrating their loyalty to the Crown through the construction of …

You Are That: An Upanishadic Approach To Empathic Writing Instruction In A High School Social Science Course, Andrew Otto Davis

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reports the results of a qualitative research project investigating an approach to composition instruction in a high school social studies course that is based on the Upanishadic concept of tat tvam asi (you are that). Research for this study was conducted while I taught a section of Non-West History to high school juniors and seniors. P-02 Service Un-Requited: African American Civil War Soldiers And Their Fight For Freedom And Pension Compensation, Clifford Allen Mar 2014

P-02 Service Un-Requited: African American Civil War Soldiers And Their Fight For Freedom And Pension Compensation, Clifford Allen

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

My research project consists of delving through over nine hundred pension records from the files of fifteen African American soldiers who participated in the Civil War. These documents are comprised of general affidavits, witness statements, physicians’ certificates, military enlistment records, marriage certificates, military roll/attendance records, certificates for discharge, and documentation of receipt of or rejection of pension requests. Using these documents I investigated the cases of these soldiers in order to discover why they did or did not receive their military pensions, the length of time the process of attaining their pensions required, and explore the stories of the soldiers …

An Instructional Model To Support Problem-Based Historical Inquiry: The Persistent Issues In History Network, Thomas Brush, John Saye Mar 2014

An Instructional Model To Support Problem-Based Historical Inquiry: The Persistent Issues In History Network, Thomas Brush, John Saye

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

For over a decade, we have collaborated with secondary school history teachers in an evolving line of inquiry that applies research-based propositions to the design and testing of a problem-based learning framework and a set of wise practices that represent a professional teaching knowledge base for implementing a particular model of instruction, problem-based historical inquiry (PBHI). PBHI centers history instruction on decision-making about persistent societal problems as they occur in particular historical periods. In order to prepare future teachers to be better able to implement this model in their classrooms, we have integrated components of this model throughout our secondary …

When To “Open It” Only Meant Untying The Pyjama Strings: Partition And Narrativity Gone Astray, Sarbani Banerjee Mar 2014

When To “Open It” Only Meant Untying The Pyjama Strings: Partition And Narrativity Gone Astray, Sarbani Banerjee

Modern Languages and Literatures Annual Graduate Conference

My paper studies how brevity manifested itself through a complete breakdown of language system in reaction to the animosity circumscribing the Partition of India. I look into Sadaat Hasan Manto’s selected Urdu short stories to demonstrate how the pared off pattern of writing coupled with creation of specific information lapses helps to project hostility in its denuded form. The dark side of language emerges through minimum clarification, where the unedited picture of gruesome carnage becomes the lone guarantor of informal accounts, generating perspectives that had hitherto been rebuffed by the selective versions of mainstream history.

Through his economization of words, …

Competing Stories: The Gardner Saga Continues, Brianna E. Kirk Mar 2014

Competing Stories: The Gardner Saga Continues, Brianna E. Kirk

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

In 1893, two Philadelphia doctors from the Mütter Museum sent surveys to Civil War amputee veterans in order to compile records on their war amputations circa thirty years after seeing combat. One of those surveys found its way into the hands of Clark Gardner, a fifty-four year old double amputee vet who served in the 10th New York Heavy Artillery. (An introduction to Garnder can be found here.) Gardner’s responses to the survey are quite compelling and provided vivid details about his war amputations, the healing processes, difficulties he encountered, and artificial limb usage. [excerpt]
