Historic Notes And Documents: Philadelphia Foundations Of The Wm. G. Porter Company Of Apalachicola, Judith Y. Robertson
Florida Historical Quarterly
During the 1830s, the Florida Panhandle was an American frontier and recently discovered documents show that Philadelphians played a significant role in opening the territory. Found in the attic of a family home is correspondence that evolved over almost half a century, including thirty productive years of the William G. Porter Company, established and operated in Apalachicola by the Porter, Ruan, and Benezet families of Pennsylvania and Florida. The correspondence, touching not only on business and economics but on personal matters like family, courtship, education, travel, nature, politics, and even weather, relates much as to how commerce bound Philadelphia to …
Voice Of The Exploited Majority: Claude Kirk And The 1970 Manatee County Forced Busing Incident, Benjamin Houston
Voice Of The Exploited Majority: Claude Kirk And The 1970 Manatee County Forced Busing Incident, Benjamin Houston
Florida Historical Quarterly
At 7:35 a.m. on Monday, April 6, 1970, Governor Claude R. Kirk Jr. strode into an unfamiliar office in Bradenton, a small Gulf Coast town sandwiched between St. Petersburg and Sarasota. The new quarters belonged to the Manatee County superintendent of schools, and the previous occupant, fired by Kirk, was now replaced by the governor himself. Kirk's self-promotion was prompted by Manatee's capitulation to a federal court order mandating immediate busing of schoolchildren with only nine weeks remaining in the academic term. Yet, the governor's conduct also marked a new level of commitment for a county associated since 1954 with …

Did Slaves Have Free Will? Luke, A Slave, V. Florida And Crime At The Command Of The Master, Craig Buettinger

The mules had been shot. When the mules, regularly left to forage for themselves amid the Florida scrub, did not wander back to the Hernandez plantation, Adam, the driver charged with their care, went to look for them. He found the animals dead and dying along the road that connected the Hernandez and Dupont plantations, south of St. Augustine. A trail of blood led to Dupont's.

The Koreshan Communitarians' Papers And Publications In Edtero, 1894-1963, Irvin D.S. Winsboro
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Koreshan Unity settlement in Estero is one of Florida's most interesting yet largely under-researched chapters of history. Organized by the mystical Cyrus Teed, the Koreshans created at the turn of the twentieth century one of Florida's few self-sustaining communal societies. The original Koreshans are gone now, but their heritage lives on in the form of the Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero, reminding over fifty thousand annual visitors of one of Florida's unique historical episodes. In particular, the Koreshans' leading economic enterprises-their publishing ventures-reflected the crux of the Koreshan experience in Florida. Their extant literature and disparate archived documents …
The Catholic Church, Martin Luther King Jr., And The March In St. Augustine, Charles R. Gallagher
The Catholic Church, Martin Luther King Jr., And The March In St. Augustine, Charles R. Gallagher
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1963 and 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference selected St. Augustine, Florida, as a target city for a new round of civil rights protests. It marked the first major SCLC campaign since the Freedom Rides and Birmingham demonstrations of 1961. In St. Augustine, local chapters of the National Association of Colored People and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference labored to enlist local Roman Catholics in the cause for civil rights, hoping that a cooperative relationship might help desegregate local businesses, civil service agencies, and restaurants. As demonstrations in St. Augustine developed, however, King's …

Senator Claude D. Pepper: Advocate Of Aid To The Allies, 193901941, Joan E. Denman
Florida Historical Quarterly
As a junior United States Senator from Florida during 1939-1941, Claude Denson Pepper was one of the most vocal advocates of conscription and aid to France and Britain. Having seen Adolph Hitler's influence and popularity firsthand in 1938, he realized the threat that Nazi Germany presented to the European continent, Great Britain, and possibly the United States. Throughout 1939 and 1940, he spoke of the need for preparedness and became increasingly outspoken as the conflict in Europe intensified. With the help of presidential advisor Benjamin V. Cohen, he drafted two Senate bills for aid to the Allies in May 1940. …

Economic Boom Or Political Boondoggle? Florida's Atlantic Gulf Ship Canal In The 1930s, Michael David Tegeder
Economic Boom Or Political Boondoggle? Florida's Atlantic Gulf Ship Canal In The 1930s, Michael David Tegeder
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the 1930s, the federal government began construction on one of the grandest public works projects in Florida. More than twice the length of the Suez and four times larger than the Panama Canal, the Atlantic Gulf Ship Canal was "perhaps the most opulent single symbol of the New Deal."1 Yet, despite the labor and massive expenditures on the part of state and federal officials, the project ended within a year of its groundbreaking. Plagued by political controversy from start to finish, the Ship Canal can be seen as a dress-rehearsal for the decades-long debate over the Cross-Florida Barge Canal …
Steamboats, Cypress, & Tourism: An Ecological History Of The Ocklawaha In The Late Nineteenth Century, Seven Noll
Steamboats, Cypress, & Tourism: An Ecological History Of The Ocklawaha In The Late Nineteenth Century, Seven Noll
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1882, George Barbour thusly described Florida's Ocklawaha River in his guidebook to the state. This river, whose name is variously spelled in the promotional literature, tourist pamphlets, and magazine articles of the late nineteenth century, enticed northern visitors and entrepreneurs alike in the years following the Civil War. Its exotic subtropical landscape, heavily forested and swampy banks, bizarre and atavistic wildlife, and otherworldly springs made it seem like something out of Africa rather than the United States. That a trip up the river by steamboat led to the remarkable fishbowl of Silver Springs only added to its appeal. From …

Get The Facts - And Then Act": How Marjorie H. Carr And Florida Defenders Of The Enviornment Fought To Save The Ocklawaha River, Frederick R. Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Self described as a "Micanopy housewife," Marjorie Harris Carr seemed an unlikely candidate to develop and lead a successful grassroots campaign to save the Ocklawaha River and the wilderness surrounding it against the Army Corps of Engineers' federally mandated Cross-Florida Barge Canal. In spearheading the "Fight to Save the Ocklawaha," Carr revealed an innate sense of how to present environmental science to the public, the media, and legislators in a way that swayed opinion.
Introduction, Sherry Johnson
Introduction, Sherry Johnson
Florida Historical Quarterly
Originally presented at the Third Biennial Allen Morris Conference in February 2004, the articles in this special issue of the Florida Historical Quarterly examine the history of three related riverine environments in north central Florida--the St. Johns River, the Ocklawaha River, and the Withlacoochee River basinss-from the mid-nineteenth century through the 1990s.1 The conference panel was designed to demonstrate how exploiting the rivers furthered modern ideas, promoted progress, and created economic prosperity. All three studies also sought to show how modernization had the potential to wreak havoc on a unique, fragile, and irreplaceable ecosystem. Collectively, these essays examine how the …

Terrorism And The Entertainment Industry: Theater, Film, And Television In A Post-9/11 World, Grace Raber
Terrorism And The Entertainment Industry: Theater, Film, And Television In A Post-9/11 World, Grace Raber
ONU Student Research Colloquium
This paper serves to explore the division in the entertainment industry after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. New York City is considered one of the cultural hubs in America so it only makes sense that various entertainment facets reflected society after the attacks. Many TV shows and movies began to introduce a much more violent and cynical form of media which showcased the uncertainty felt in the immediate aftermath to showcase the flaws 9/11 brought up in society. This also led to the rise of psychological thrillers, a relatively new form of horror film.
However, on the other end of the …

Twitter's Role In An Increasingly Polarized Political Climate; A Look Into The 2020 Us Elections, Leanne Kendall
Honors Projects in Data Science
Amidst politically strained times, one might wonder what has cause such an exaggerated gap between the views of democrats and republicans. For years, research has suggested the US’s voting population is becoming increasingly politically polarized, with one of the causes being social media. This study's purpose is to understand more about the role that social media plays in the polarization of parties in the US. The study is comprised of the analysis of over 3,000,000 tweets from 9/22/2020 through 11/10/2020 that mention or are written by senate and presidential candidates. Natural language processing, network graphing, and sentiment analyses were utilized …

Africa’S Tepid Response To Ukraine War Highlights Shortcomings Of U.S. Diplomacy, Julius A. Amin

Three years ago, at the Russia-Africa Summit in Sochi, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised African leaders that Russo-African relations would be based on respect of territorial and national sovereignty. After the summit, both sides signed military and other agreements, something that would be beneficial to Russia in the future.
A case in point has been Africa’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Forgotten Activists Of Georgia: The Black Women Of Savannah, Emily Zanieski
The Forgotten Activists Of Georgia: The Black Women Of Savannah, Emily Zanieski
Honors College Theses
Historians of the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia have primarily focused on how the national movement unfolded in the city of Atlanta. More recent scholarship has highlighted the role Martin Luther King Jr. played in Albany; however, many of these analyses focus on figures within the larger movement rather than focusing on local, grassroots organizers. Additionally, their primary focus tends to be on the role of Black men, leaving behind the voices of Black women who led alongside them. Through a Long Civil Rights Movement (LCRM) approach, I argue that Black women in Savannah, Georgia played an instrumental role in …
