A growing literature on professional training and practice of psychology advocates that psychologists must be educated on risks and effects of impairment and the importance of self-care. Despite the general recognition of the importance of these issues, they have not been incorporated into training standards such as the American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines and Principles of Accreditation (2007). In order to assess the approaches that programs currently adopt to address impairment and self-care, this study extended and updated previous research. A large sample of students (n = 591) enrolled in APA accredited doctoral training programs in professional psychology completed surveys …

I conducted a study of the deceptive pollination system of Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisama triphyllum, Araceae) in forests of west-central Indiana. I focused on (a) determining the identities and abundances of insect visitors to spathes, (b) evaluating the success of female spathes in setting fruit, (c) determining the relative importance of pollinator visitation and plant size for fruit number, and (d) investigating the function of the female spathe’s lack of an exit hole, which has been hypothesized to improve pollination success. I found that (a) Jack-in-the-pulpit receives visits from both flies and thrips. Counts of fly corpses from spathes showed the most …

The purpose of this research was to gain information on Robert Schumann and trace themes of nature within his Liederkreis Op. 39. The specific problems of this study were as follows: 1.) to analyze the lieder of Schumann’s Liederkreis Op. 39 in terms of form; 2.) to identify and trace the themes of nature in Liederkreis Op. 39; and 3.) to identify how these themes are found in both the music and poetry of Liederkreis Op. 39. A brief section of research places this specific song cycle in the context of time, place, and composer.

My thesis will research themes of solitude, love, nature, mood or emotional states, and the duality of joy and pain in the Robert Schumann’s Lieder composed around the year 1840. This year was the year of Schumann’s marriage to his music teacher’s daughter Clara Wieck and is, consequently, the year when Robert Schumann turned to writing Lieder or songs. Lieder were a unique lyric genre created in Germany during Romantic era. In this brief monograph based on her dissertation, Leslie Morris sets out to achieve a series of aims: to contest the alleged divide between Bachmann's poetry and prose, to counter "the myth of her apolitical poetic voice" (10), to address the presence and absence of history in her poetry, and, finally, to consider how to read Bachmann's poetic ceuvre in light of historical developments in Germany and Austria in the 1980s and 1990s. In a sense, Morris is also trying to rehabilitate post-war aesthetic modemism from a reductive, binary mode of criticism that separates aesthetics and politics. Following in the …

Mental illness is not just a technical problem of psychology or public health: it is a cultural problem. Words such as "crazy," "nuts," ''wacko," "psycho," "mad," or "insane" reflect serious ambiguity about mental illness. This ambiguity about mental illness, embedded in Western culture, proves stronger than scientific and medical enlightenment. Because some notion of reason is so central to our notions of humanity and the self, perceived violations of reason are even more threatening than crossings of racial, cultural, and gender boundaries. We keep our own fear of mental illness at bay by constantly invoking it in jest and consigning …

The Independent Study, with Professor Duncan Smith, was titled "The Image of Germany in America, 1871-1917." The paper examines two newspapers — the Providence Journal and the Providencer Anzeiger — and attempts to trace how the attack on Germany and on all things German in the United States during the first World War played out in and on both newspapers. It seeks to answer the basic question, "Why did Lietz become an educator and what were his motives in establishing the Landerziehungsheime?" The thesis is divided, generally, into three sections. But, according to him, this could only be possible if the people were to develop a critical attitude and awareness of the contradictions that exist in such a society, in which "exploiters exploit the exploited", to put it in Brecht's straightforward terminology. The tragedy Hakon Jarl the Mighty was completed toward the latter part of the year 1805 at Halle, Germany. The author, Adam Gottlob Oehlenschlaeger, wrote the work in Danish and later on translated it into German. It was first published in November, 1807, in Nordiske Digte, and was presented for the first time at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, January 30, 1808. Before this, Oehlenschlaeger had used the same materials in his poem, The Death of Hakon Jarl, which appeared in 1802 .. Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was a German poet whose poetry has a strong political focus. MacDonald includes several translations from Heine in Exotics (pp. 154-165), his book of translations from German and Italian poets (1876). The poems he includes resonate nicely with Phantastes.

Phantastes Chapter 22: Titan: A Romance, Jean Paul

German Romantic and Other Influences

Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, 1763-1825) was a German writer. Titan (1800-1803) is a four-volume novel in the Bildungsroman (novel of education) tradition. Schoppe is the friend of Albano (the main character), who searches for balance in his life. Schoppe, however, is a cynic and pessimist and dies after he thinks he see his doppelgänger, but who is, in fact, his look-alike friend. Schoppe’s tragic ending reinforces the death of the brothers in Phantastes.
