Edwin Fischer And Bach Performance Practice Of The Weimar Republic, Bradley V. Brookshire

Edwin Fischer (1886-1960) provided a synthesis of approaches to Bach pianism that resolved dialectical tensions of long standing between schools that opposed one another throughout the nineteenth century. I argue that Fischer’s synthesis––which permits exegetical interpretation while maintaining a preservationist stance toward the integrity of the text––resembles both Felix Mendelssohn’s bifurcated approach to Bach’s music and Moses Mendelssohn’s description of a similar duality within modern Judaism. Such resemblance may not be coincidental or superficial, given that Fischer married into the Mendelssohn family at the height of its cultural influence in Weimar-Era Berlin. Inhabiting the Discourses of Belonging; Franz Kafka and Yoko Tawada examines the role of language in creating the identity of the foreigner in German prose. Writing at opposite ends of the 20^th century, Kafka and Tawada serve as harbingers for a broader sense of alienation that comes with writing as an Other. Using lenses provided by Spivak, Butler, Said and Deluze, this essay surveys the broader cultural concepts and theoretical implications of the notion of the metaphorical subaltern that can be created in prose, and the particularities presented by the German language in creating and articulating this identity. This ethnography, conducted at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, conveys the experiences of tutors, students, and administrators in a multilingual writing lab. As the number of both multilingual and international students in American universities increases, more writing centers in the United States have begun to explore the idea of multilingual tutoring. This study offers implications for establishing American multilingual writing centers based on data that emerged from observations and interviews conducted at Stellenbosch. Several themes emerged from the data that have important implications for American centers. First, there must be a clear understanding of what defines a multilingual writing center. …

Die Berliner Buchbinderei W. Collin mit ihren Leitfiguren Wilhelm und Georg Collin, die letzten Hofbuchbinder zu den preußischen Königen und deutschen Kaisern, sowie der Antiquar, Schriftsteller und Redakteur Ernst Collin, zählten zu den bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten der deutschen Buchbinderei von Mitte des 19ten Jahrhunderts bis in die 1930er des 20ten Jahrhunderts. In dieser Zeit erlebte die Buchbinderei infolge der industriellen Revolution eine Umstrukturierung von kleinen Handwerksbetrieben zu Großbuchbindereien.
