This is the text of a paper submitted in 1992 by Andrée Rathemacher as the final project for an Independent Study course at Brown University. The Independent Study, with Professor Duncan Smith, was titled "The Image of Germany in America, 1871-1917." The paper examines two newspapers — the Providence Journal and the Providencer Anzeiger — and attempts to trace how the attack on Germany and on all things German in the United States during the first World War played out in and on both newspapers. This paper presents a detailed portrait of the sudden flowering and subsequent decline of the Eastern European Jewish cultural scene in Berlin in the years following the First World War. Particular attention is focused on the period between 1922 and 1924, during which almost all manifestations of Yiddish culture thrived in the German capital.

The paper is introduced with a brief description of the large Eastern European Jewish migration to and through Berlin in the early twenties. The demographic information summarized in this section supplies a background for the cultural analysis. A survey of the main reasons for this influx …

The Bridging Motif In The Short Stories Of Franz Kafka, Charlene Saber

In analyzing the short stories "Forschungen eines Hundes," "Ein Bericht fŸr eine Akademie," and "Die BrŸcke," I have found characters who function as creators of new locations -- bridging characters. These figures bridge the gap between extremes and, hence, exist in a state of "inbetweenness." Furthermore, these characters are paradigmatic of the human condition, which also seems to synthesize rebellious tendencies and desires. There appears to be two distinct extremes in Franz Kafka's short stories: the nature Pole and the intellectual pole. The bridge figures in the three stories, as well as other characters in Kafka's works, seem stretched between …

Telling Grimm Tales: Rhetoric That Molds, Comforts And Remains, Constance S. E. Cooper

Masters Theses

An explanation of oral tradition and its portent for language clarifies the fairy tale genre. Its purpose, various cultural impacts, criticism and limitations are introduced. Ludwig and Wilhelm Grimm translated their personal interest into a form of speech that endures past cultural and linguistic barriers. The Grimms' scholastic credentials and lifework reveal the original storytellers and subjects in a historical/geographical framework. Part II isolates 68 tales of animal dialogue, discusses human-like character responses of help and harm, and submits a brief narrative criticism of the conglomerate rhetorical entity. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, considered one of the foremost Spanish naturalistic authors, wrote between 1894 and 1928. He is best known for his first group of novels, the Valencian series (1894-1902), which represent his most naturalistic period. Little critical investigation has been made regarding the aesthetical qualities of these novels. Most research considers either the biographical, historical or scientific approach or arrives at conclusions without demonstrating sufficient analysis. Discussion of the novelist’s artistry is usually superficial or vague. In recent years, there has been extensive debate in the area of literary criticism, much of it focused on real or imagined differences between male and female texts. French feminist theorists, Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray, to name a few, argue that biological differences necessitate textual differences, while others reject this essentialist position, considering it just another means for perpetuating the notion of female inferiority. Many linguists assert that women use language differently than men, and that texts reflect these differences.
