While serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Poland Warsaw Mission, I came across historical records indicating that as early as 1860 branches of the Church were formed in present-day Poland. According to those records, some of these early branches reported significant membership, in the hundreds, only a few years after their formation. Branches exhibiting such successful growth included those located in the current cities of Szczecin, Wroc­aw, and ­ary. My research is to examine the actual structure that dictates the shape of plural formation in German, and why in some dialects we see a failure to consistently form the plural using the method present in the standard language. My research began as I came across contradicting theories concerning the Anglicization of Pennsylvania German while writing a paper for an advanced modern German course. While researching for that preliminary paper, I found scholars suggesting that English has completely taken over the PA German language. Such scholars stated that the rate of English borrowings was increasing at a record rate and that the language was not an actual language at all, but rather a messy conglomeration of English and Standard German. This project proposed an analysis of a series of children’s books published in 1904 by a mission in Berlin. The project’s depth and uniqueness were based on the reading of both the text and the accompanying pictures. I was able to participate in the collection of the documents, translate each book in the series of six, and write and present a research paper outlining a post-colonial art historical approach to the volume specifically about India.

In Tonga, an archipelago deep in the South Pacific Ocean, German immigrants during the middle and late nineteenth century played an important role in the development of the islands. The presence of businessmen involved in the Copra trade was especially significant, and according to historical evidence, members of the Wolfgramm and Sanft families, both from Pyritz, Pomerania, Prussia were among the most influential. Ada Christen (1839-1901), Viennese feminist, naturalist, and popular poet, published Faustina: Drama in fünf Akten, in 1871. The drama, which was set as a melodramatic version of Goethe’s Faust, did not succeed, and today, Faustina still exists only in library archives (Kord 344). The purpose of my work with Faustina was twofold: to transcribe the text of the play for SOPHIE, BYU’s database of German women’s literature, and then to write a paper analyzing the text.

This study compared the levels of anxiety that students experienced when taking a foreign language in the classroom with those taking a foreign language at a distance. It also aimed to determine if the student’s academic performance in the course could be predicted by his or her foreign language anxiety level. The sample consisted of 107 undergraduate students (57 traditional classroom students and 50 online students) enrolled in SPAN 101 at Indiana State University in the spring of 2012. Everyday listeners make personal judgments about the people with whom they are speaking based on the accent or voice quality of the speaker. Studies have shown that a person’s speech– independent of accent–can influence a listener to make judgments about the speaker’s intelligence, sociability, trustworthiness, and a number of other personal traits (Hiraga, 1999). Numerous articles have examined the difficulties Korean speakers have learning the English /l/ and /r/ sounds (e.g., Borden et al 1983; Smith, 2001; Han, 2002). Most Korean learners of English hear and produce no distinction between English /l/ and /r/, because no surface contrast exists in Korean between these two liquid sounds (Iverson & Sohn, 1994). The English retroflex /r/ does not exist in Korean; Korean only has a phoneme /l/ with three distinct allophones: an apical flap [ɾ] in the initial position (as in atom in English), a lateral [l] in the coda position, and a geminate [ll] in …

This paper critically investigates this notion, focusing not on property, but on the realm of ideas and personal experiences. With a basis in historical and theoretical notions of the public and private spheres as conceptualized by Hannah Arendt, I analyze critical works by Jurek Becker and Heinrich Böll written in the two German states in the 1970s. Robert Schumann's music reflects the complexity of his life and psyche. Even Schumann himself acknowledged the challenges this presented to anyone attempting to understand his music, and the Piano Sonata no. 1 in F-sharp minor, op. 11 is an example of the complex inter-relationship between Schumann's music and life. This document will have a three-fold approach to discussing Schumann's Sonata. I will outline the literary characteristics of German Romantic authors, discuss how Schumann musically interprets these characteristics while reflecting other composers, and show how these techniques help add extra-musical significance to op. 11, particularly in connection with Clara.
