The endeavor to preserve the memory of German composer Luise Greger (1862-1944) has taken me and my mentor, Dr. Michelle James, head of the German and Slavic Department, into the almost unexplored topic of early 20th century German music. Since very little effort has been devoted to Greger’s music, there have been but few sources we could turn to as we have gathered contextual information to frame Greger’s significance in history. As a result, we have been able to delve into an exciting area of knowledge, breaking ground where barely anyone else had been.

Martin Luther is well known for his 95 Theses, in which he rejects the Catholic practice of selling indulgences; but it was his groundbreaking translation of the Bible into German that instigated the standardization of the German language. After his excommunication, Luther was in hiding in the Wartburg Castle, where he translated his Bible into a vernacular and cohesive form of the German language. Many different dialects were spoken throughout Germany at the time making communication between regions difficult. Luther’s translation soon became the most influential Bible in Germany and was disseminated quickly due to the recently invented printing …

Before beginning this project I was aware of the vast variety of literature available in both English and German language. Having been fortunate enough to work with Dr. James already on the Sophie Project, an undertaking of the Department of Germanic and Slavic here at BYU, I was also aware of the number of German-language literature pieces that Dr. James has collected over the past years. However, I was not aware of the impact that this literature can have and the insights that it can provide.

I am from Bountiful, Utah. I am majoring in Family History-Genealogy. During the 2011 Spring Term, I worked at the Estonian Historical Archives in Tartu, Estonia, and the Estonian Jewish Museum in Tallinn, Estonia. At the Archives, my major responsibility was to translate Hebrew documents into Estonian. I also transliterated Yiddish documents. At the Museum, I gave tours to visitors (mostly Jewish tourists from the U.S. and Israel), teaching them about the history and culture of Estonia’s Jews. This research examines how Soviet directors portrayed Americans in the six anti-American films released during the late Stalin era (1945-1953). These six films are The Russian Question (dir. Romm, 1947), Meeting on the Elbe (dir. Alexandrov, 1949), Court of Honor (dir. Room, 1949), Conspiracy of the Doomed (dir. Kalatozov, 1950), Secret Mission (dir. Romm, 1950), and Silvery Dust (dir. Room, 1953). This period is unique because the allies of World War II became enemies in the Cold War. Accordingly, for the first time in Soviet Cinema, Americans became the enemy. Study abroad programs have long enjoyed the prestige of being considered an exceptionally effective way to become fluent in a second language (Freed 1998). This conclusion has been supported by a multitude of studies. Smith, Aten, and Baker (2009) showed that German students on an 11-week study abroad in Berlin and on a similar study abroad in Vienna improved their accentedness, fluency, and comprehensibility in the course of the program. Moreover, Freed (1998) notes that many large-scale studies tend to find overall improvement in the listening and speaking skills of students participating in a study abroad. Beatriz’ Tod ermöglicht Beatriz selbst, den anderen weiblichen Figuren Olga und Laura, und den weiblichen und auch männlichen Figuren Benno und Valaska weiter und besser zu leben. Er nahm besondere Sorgfalt in diese Übersetzung, so dass jede deutsche Person die Bibel sollte lesen können. In seiner Übersetzung hielt er sich nah an der Latein-Versionen der Bibel. In meiner Arbeit werde ich zeigen, dass diese unsicheren Haltungen über Rockmusik die konkurrierenden Ideen innerhalb der Parteiorganisationen und die widersprüchlichen Elemente der SED-Organisationen offenbaren. Three different surveys, all of which had 40 questions, were written and distributed while I was on a study abroad in Berlin, Germany. The point of the surveys was to discover what personal language attitudes and biases towards foreigners were held. Every scholar of modern Jewish history is familiar with the poet Judah Leib Gordon’s 1862 exhortation to European Jewry: “Be a man in the street and a Jew at home” (as quoted in Ashkenazi, xv, 48). This motto takes on new relevance in the work of historian Ofer Ashkenazi, for whom public and private behaviors play out in the spatial terms of Weimar cinematic representation. Within the world of the street, Jews display only authentic bourgeois mannerisms and appearances; in private, the masquerade ceases to be necessary. Benjamin's ideal of literary montage involves the utilization of ideas that he refers to as Abfall, or detritus, and rearranging them—preserved in the momentary spontaneity in which they were conceived—in order to create an entirely new meaning. As I began researching Ruth Berlau’s life, I encountered repeated references to Berlau’s beauty, always accompanied by the suggestion that it was her looks that attracted German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s attention. Berlau was one of a long line of women whom Brecht drew into his orbit, but most critics seem to agree that Berlau lacked the literary and secretarial skills of her predecessors Elisabeth Hauptmann and Margarethe Steffin. The discovery of Russian sectarians popularly known as Mormons has generated great interest among missionaries and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in recent years, and several informative articles have appeared on the subject.1 This article summarizes my findings from three weeks of archival and village research on the Russian Mormons in May 2001, and sheds new light on hitherto unresolved historical questions regarding the origin of the title Mormon in Russia, the geography of the movement, and its eventual fate.2
