Two Liberals On Religion: Constant And Tocqueville Compared, Helena Rosenblatt

As founding fathers of modern liberalism, Benjamin Constant and Alexis de Tocqueville shared a common sensibility as well as a number of key concerns. Of central importance to both men was the need to protect individual rights and freedoms against what they saw as an encroaching social power. Having learned the lessons of the French Revolution, they knew that power, whether concentrated in the hands of one man, or executed in the name of the "people", was a dangerous thing. Spiral grain, the alignment of wood fibers (trachejds) to the longitudinal axis of h·ees, is thought to be an indicator of old age and is a phenomenon that has been only stndied with destrnctive sampling methods (cutting down trees). In this study, the usefulness of non-fatal sampling methods and existing methods to quantify spiral grain patterns in Jiving and dead deciduous trees are examined, particularly in white oaks (Qi1ercus alba). 111e overall goal is to detem1ine if spiral grain growth is a reasonable indicator of h·ee age. Literature on cultural competence has primarily developed in the fields of counseling psychology and counselor education. The field of school psychology has responded to the increased focus of cultural competency by providing recommended skills needed to provide psychological services in schools to diverse individuals and groups. Currently, research in effective cultural competency training has primarily focused on graduate training programs. This study extends the literature on cultural competency training by developing a training model that is appropriate for professionals who are already working in the field. Three women narrate their lives in French, the colonist's language, instead of in Arabic, their mother tongue. They pay homage to their families in order to rid themselves of guilty and revengeful feelings. In Les saisons de passage and Le bonheur a la queue glissante, Andree Chedid and Abla Farhoud express their love for an absent mother, who represents both the rebellious and submissive arabic woman. In La prisonniere, Malika Oufkir denounces the king's injustice for having condemned Oufkir's family for life and General Oufkir to death because he attempted a military putch against Hassan II. In this essay, I explore various dimensions of theoretical terms such as exile, nomadism, diaspora, and border. These terms have a temporal and spatial dimension. They are not equivalent to each other and they generate different kinds of identity narratives. In fact, in their strict definitions, as John Durham Peters demonstrates, they oppose each other. Yet, in contemporary texts, fiction and non- fiction, regardless of the individual experiences portrayed, they are also often intertwined. Since the publication of Vivre me tue in 1997, Paul Smaïl's published statements about the necessity for a "Beur" writer to protect his dignity and his freedom behind a pseudonym have generated a significant layer of metafiction which this essay proposes to examine. An analysis of Smaïl's different types of narrative accounts will help us elucidate the cultural and literary effects produced by the writer's strategy.

While it had somewhat disappeared as a central preoccupation in recent African fiction, the issue of "race" comes up in a striking way in Daniel Biyaoula's first novel, L 'impasse. Published in 1996, L'impasse sets out to expose through the eye of a rather cynical first-person narrator the neurotic nature of postcolonial subjects' relation to his/her racialized origin. Focusing on the body as a site of authenticity or alienation, the novel can be read as a contemporary and creative version of the "Black experience" as Franz Fanon theorized it almost half a century before in Black Skin White Masks. Psychological detachment is often presented as an exile from which there is no return. The works of Malika Mokeddem illustrate the lack of social support for psychic space of the individual who passes through anxiety and ends in psychological detachment. This article proposes to show, in L 'interdite and N'zid, how Mokeddem affirms nevertheless hope for recovery from this state. It also demonstrates the link between hope and mobility of the body, as well as of words, which must cross the spaces of anxiety in order to find community and the "inestimable freedom" (L'interdite, p. 132) that support and permit …

In the fiction of Farjallah Hark, fire and heat constitute distinguished means of expression in various fields. In his conception of fire, there is an intermingling between what is natural and what is social; good and evil are both employed, and a group of complexes are formed, such as the Promethee complex, the Empedocle complex, or the Novalis complex. La Poésie, Chanson Des Temps Futurs Ou La Force De L'Avenlr Chez Dadié, Françoise Ugochukwu

This study of Dadié's poetry, focusing on Hommes de tous les continents, uncovers the traditional and biblical roots of this cross-cultural writing. The study of imagery, symbols and rhythm highlights the writer's exploration of time and space, his perception of the poet's role as a soldier and inspired guide, and reveals his poetry as a militant powerfully word pointing towards a future yet unborn.
