This is a creative thesis composed of two components: 1) a critical introduction that contextualizes and supports the project of the second component, 2) a book manuscript of poetry. The project explores genre concerns of poetry by developing experimental prose poems that incorporate video game themes, language, and instructional writing. The project presents the interplay of the notions of control and failure to examine the borders between simulation (games) and reality (the world outside of games). The poems are constructed around the idea of designed failure, through which, the introduction argues, their status as poetry is inherently threatened, and they …

Zach Manges has made much of his time as an English Writing major at DePauw. He has worked in almost every genre - playwriting, fiction writing, and poetry - and he is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Midwestern Review. His work is distinguished by such lines as “We say we have two seasons here: winter/ and construction, where streets get/ facelifts until they can’t stop/ smiling.” When you read Zach’s poems you can tell he’s in love with words. He has developed as a writer as a magician might. As you read Zach’s work notice his sleight of hand.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching Amanda Volel continue to develop as a poet in her senior year. In one poem she writes, “Poetry is a cathedral I find myself in.'" In one sense she worships in the cathedral of poetry, yet in. another, she tears that “cathedral” down. By the end of that poem, poetry is reduced to a “box that opens [her] chest.” Her work moves across the landscape of New York City picking up what she finds both literally and linguistically. “Dendron” is the Greek word for “tree.” “Dendrochronology” is the study of a tree’s rings. “Dendrites” are the neural projections that grow like a tree’s branches in our brains so we can learn and respond to stimuli. This collection of poems, Dendron, is a poetic exploration of my growth. The collection—twenty-one poems, one for each year of my life—is a living, poetic memoir. Presented in chronological order, each of the poems is meant to capture a specific year of my life. The poems—of varying styles and sentiments—are not without quick moments of fiction, but for the most part, they coalesce …
