This poetic anthology represents a collection of works which examine the duality of nature and industrialism, and how they coexist in modern society. It also communicates the idea that we -- as a collective human race -- should listen to the metaphorical “voices” of the natural world and pay regard to the needs of the Earth we inhabit. The anthology borrows stylistically and thematically from works of Japanese modernists Sagawa Chika and Hirato Renkichi, who particularly identify with and inspire the message of this anthology in that, while the Western tradition often suggests that nature and the urban are diametrically …

The frst thing I learned about poetry from Chana was delight—delight in the world around us, pain and all. I studied with Chana at Mills College in Oakland, California, from 1996 to 1998, in the Master of Fine Arts in English and Creative Writing Program. For a period, our work-shops met at her house in the East Bay hills; I remember her living room with ornate red decorations and dark foor- to- ceiling bookshelves. Louise Helen Coburn was born in Skowhegan, Maine on September 1, 1856, daughter of Stephen Coburn and Helen Sophia Miller. Coburn was Colby's second female graduate (after Mary Low Carver) in 1877, and graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors. She also later received an honorary Litt. D. degree from Colby in 1914. Coburn's family was deeply tied to Colby College. Her father Stephen graduated in 1839, and the Coburn family was critical to Colby's early development as benefactors. Coburn was a co-founder, along with Mary Low Carver and others, of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. Coburn also later attended the Harvard …

"Amidst a Bottled Word: Poetry and Prose" includes a variety of different themes, styles, and genre—many reflecting a cynical or ironic tone. This eclectic thesis reflects the wide-ranging interest of its creator. The stories within this collection are a thriller and a work of speculative fiction, the former supernatural and the latter near future or science fiction. In one story, "The Man Behind the Curtain," Val, the older of two young sisters, must protect herself and her sister while enduring a weekend visit to her estranged Grandparents' house, while signs of a mysterious man keep emerging throughout their stay.
