Writing Not Writing: Transdisciplinary Poetics, Institutional Critique, Miriam L. Atkin

This dissertation is an exploration of transdisciplinary creative practice as a means of institutional critique. The artists I have chosen as my primary focus—Robert Kocik, Eleni Stecopoulos, Zora Neale Hurston, Jimmie Durham, Leslie Scalapino and Lyn Hejinian—employ multiple mediums and fields of discourse to address the presumptions and exclusions that are structurally integral to the institutions that house them. They enact “architextural” interventions through their use of forms that move between the page and three dimensional space, incorporating architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, film, performance, poetry and prose. Poems Of Debate And Praise: Women As Published Authors In Sixteenth-Century France, Anna Soo-Hoo

Non-fictional, published poetic exchanges between men and women in sixteenth-century France provide new perspectives into how women writers operated in a literary culture whose main producers and dominant voice were male. Contrary to the notion repeated by many critics that women of that period were supposed to stay out of the public sphere, my study finds that publishing a woman’s poems did not destroy her reputation, and there appears to have been no major backlash when a man decided to include poems by a female contemporary in his book. Odd Botany engages with the concepts of the wild and the domestic in poetry to create whimsical, humorous poems that contend with the darker aspects of living. Varied in form, many of these poems are persona poems and use animals other than humans as speakers. Using distortion, surprise, and word-play, the poems attempt to create a psychic-turbulence to be pleasurable and enlivening to the reader.

Black poets have long explored the effects of grief and tragedy through their work while also navigating the challenges of a racist American society. This manuscript delves into those themes as the poet examines how she, her family, and romantic interests operate within those strange spheres as well. She explores the unique intimacy of grief and social isolation as she shows us what it means to be a Black woman in a racist and capitalistic society. Her work reveals the pain of operating within those structures and the devastating emotional toll it can take on the Black family.

Poetry and rap are dissected using text mining techniques in order to determine overall trends in the words used by both. With this data, the way in which ideas and concepts are expressed can be compared and contrasted as a way of showing the legitimacy of rap as a form of literary expression. Other topics within the paper are: a background of the history of rap and the digital humanities, and an example of a close reading featuring a medieval poem and a rap by Eminem. In confessional genre-blending poems, prose, and poetic essays, Wish in One Hand probes the reality of living in liminal spaces, and how that reality changes perceptions of identity and the home. Crossing three physical spaces that separate the works, the idea of home is shown to be fluid and multifaceted, frequently interweaving with ideas of childhood, memory, and the passage of time. From meditations on mice in the walls to visceral descriptions of swamp creatures, Wish in One Hand reflects the personal struggle to reconcile liminality with the concrete nature of our worldly experiences.
