The Sociology Of Scenes, The Sacramento Poetry Scene, Dana Nell Maher May 2009

The Sociology Of Scenes, The Sacramento Poetry Scene, Dana Nell Maher

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

For this ethnography, I use my feminist perspective, grounded theory, participant observation, and autoethnographic techniques to explore an urban poetry scene. I suggest that scene studies are a viable alternative to community studies and that we move our articulation of social experience to reflect it as it occurs, on a multitude of continuums. My goal with this project is to develop, use, and discuss the utility of a definition of scene that is intended to be useful to scene studies researchers. To this end, I both evaluate an outdated definition of scene (Irwin 1973 & 1977), and define the three …

Map Of The Folded World, John Gallaher Apr 2009

Map Of The Folded World, John Gallaher

University of Akron Press Publications

Map of the Folded World, John Gallaher's third full-length collection, examines the eros and desperation of suburban America with the precision of a cartographer's eye. But as its title suggests, it does so according to the polar opposite of convention. More concerned with subtext than narrative, often childlike in tone and propelled by the logic of innocence, Gallaher's poems don't shy away from a bottom-line sensibility: “If you can just run fast enough,” one poem offers, “no one will ever die. // Do you remember that? / And are you better now?” This is a book filled with swimming …

Sisyphus Uphill, April K. Phillips Apr 2009

Sisyphus Uphill, April K. Phillips

English Theses & Dissertations

Sisyphus Uphill is a collection of poems inspired by the mythic struggle of one man who angered the gods by trying to be too much like them. Sisyphus was cursed to roll a heavy boulder up a mountaintop and then watch it tumble back down to the bottom for all eternity. The pitfalls of hubris and the seeming pointlessness of our daily attempts to get ahead both in the rat race and in personal relationships may not contain the high drama of myth, but this material is rife with hidden comedy and tragedy. These poems deal with the everyday and …

Aftertaste, Matilda W. Cox Apr 2009

Aftertaste, Matilda W. Cox

English Theses & Dissertations

This collection of poems is a collage of my experiences and observations. Some of the poems emerge from an attempt to make sense of contemporary events or the day-to-day minutia of my daily life in twenty-first century America.

The collection is divided thematically into three sections. The first has to do with the past and its impact on the future. The second has to do with the sensual and the romantic (for lack of a better term). The third section is concerned with the impact of socio-political issues on the individual. These categories arose naturally from the subject matter, but …

"A Long Wonder The World Can Bear & Be" : Narrative Strategies In The Dream Songs, Cooper Childers Jan 2009

"A Long Wonder The World Can Bear & Be" : Narrative Strategies In The Dream Songs, Cooper Childers

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis examines the narrative development of The Dream Songs while viewing Henry as the locus and the impetus of the various narrative strategies deployed therein. Through the abundance of generic and literary allusions present in The Dream Songs, Berryman's sequence functions both to engage and to interact with the Western literary canon. The first chapter of this thesis locates The Dream Songs within Petrarchan sequences. The second chapter treats Henry's and the unnamed speaker's local language and shows how their competing speech genres inform the sequence's modes. The third chapter examines the role of epic codes in creating the …

Flaming Red Wig, Carla Christina Howl Jan 2009

Flaming Red Wig, Carla Christina Howl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Flaming Red Wig" is a collection of short stories and prose poems with a critical preface. Both the preface and the creative work explore notions of artifice, apposition and entering into a text (both written and character) with stillness or intrusion. I try to create an examination and communion with language on much the same level, ultimately yielding a musicality that creates a rhythmic discourse and dynamic between the significance and the notion. The title of my thesis refers to the obvious motif of artifice and the reoccurring theme of emotional pain attached to gender and humanistic role within specific …
