These are vivid, visceral poems about coming of age in a place “where the Ferris Wheel/ was the tallest thing in the valley,” where a boy would learn “to fire a shotgun at nine and wring a chicken’s neck/ with one hand by twirling the bird and whipping it straight like a towel.” Looking back, the poet wrestles with the meaning of labor in the apple orchards and “the filthy dollars we’d wad into our pockets,” or the rites of passage that included sinking a knife into the flank of a dead chestnut horse. A Note from the Author: Writing has been a way for me to process emotions. I wrote the poems in this collection in the early 90's which was a trans-formative period in my life. The 2010 edition of The Broad River Review was edited by C. V. Davis. The publication contains fiction, non-fiction, art, poetry, and photography. The cover was photographed by Justin Roper. The winner of the J. Calvin Koontz Poetry Award, given annually for a portfolio of poetry to a senior English major, is Nicholas Laughridge. The Broad River Review Editor's Prizes in Fiction and Poetry are chosen among all submissions from Gardner-Webb University students. Ambivalent Posthumanism: A Few Of Stevens’ Animals, Brian Glaser

This essay focuses on several categories of Wallace Stevens' use of animals in his poetry that is arguably posthumanist. It argues on the emotional ambivalence made by "Mountains Covered with Cats" which points out that animals are also living entities to experience and know with a mixture of positive and negative emotions. It cites Sigmund Freud's concept of ambivalence where he transcribe and reflect on the most well-known dream of a predatory animal in the modernist milieu.
