Cape Town Performance Poetry: The Activist’S Pen Is Mighty, Kelsey Rae Brattin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Beginning with a look back to historical Xhosa oral traditions and then examining the role of performance poetry in resistance during Apartheid, this paper explores the existence of contemporary Cape Town performance poetry in a setting that has been a home to poets for centuries. Specifically, this project is a look into the space, mental and physical, that exists within Cape Town’s current performance poetry scene for themes of resistance and activism. Through the observation of public poetry performances in local bookstores and coffeehouse, and through interviews with poets and audience members, contemporary attitudes of writers and community members toward …

The Molloy Student Literary Magazine, sponsored by Molloy College’s Office of Student Affairs, is devoted to publishing the best previously unpublished works of prose, poetry, drama, literary review, criticism, and other literary genres, that the Molloy student community has to offer. The journal welcomes submissions, for possible publication, from currently enrolled Molloy students at all levels. All submitted work will undergo a review process initiated by the Managing Editor prior to a decision being made regarding publication of said work. Ahead a Wild Fire is a collection of poems which investigate humanity's relationship with science, space, and himself—the dichotomy between the coldness (literal and figurative) of those endeavors and the warmth of a home we take for granted—the exploration of how we fit in as individuals and as a species within the larger context—a shifting away from reliance on a deity and human exceptionalism. We are special, not because we are the top of the food chain, but because we harbor love and hope.

An Idea of Liberation in the Suburbs uses traditional forms such as haiku, haibun, sestina, pantoum, villanelle and original invented forms, but also includes free-verse litany, epistolary and prose poems. The poems vary in the use of lyric and narrative modes. The subjects and themes concern religion, spirituality, philosophy, language play, the mind and inquiries into the nature of thinking.

In my current PhD study, Creative River Journeys, I use the metaphor of the river as a data capture tool when interviewing artist-researchers about their experiences of conducting creative practice within a university context. My use of the river functions as a metaphor for the creative process. I have adapted the River Journey tool from its previous use as a map of teacher identity and professional development, and in a project about children’s musical experience. My honors senior thesis, a creative project entitled Separate Spaces, is a collection of fourteen poems that reflects on trauma, loss, interpersonal relationships, and nature. Many of the poems are dramatic monologues, which means that they are written in a voice that is distinctly not my own. This allows me to portray a range of extreme voices, including a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima, a U.S. veteran of the Iraq War, and murderer Perry Smith.
