History Has The Voice Of A Bird-Filled Tree, Brent Allen Fisk

This creative thesis, History Has the Voice of a Bird-Filled Tree, is a collection of poems about the communal, familial, and physical landscapes we grow up in. The manuscript explores the accidental body of knowledge we accumulate over a lifetime: those lessons we do not actively seek to learn and that no one sets out to teach us, but that mark us, and make us who we are. The landscape of this manuscript is not an exact replication of an existing town or existing family, but what the poet Richard Hugo refers to as a “triggering town.” This removal frees …

The Language of Trees is a poetry collection based on a series of walks, and rooted in the experience of place on a small island off the west coast of Canada. Prose poems and a serial poem that gives the collection its title, reflect the poet's leanings towards experiment. The preface discusses poetics and the poet's technical approach to form.

From 1849 to 1850, Calista Cummings edited and published Akron's first literary magazine, The Akron Offering. At the time, Akron was a booming canal town on the verge of even greater prosperity. By turns religious, comic, romantic, and political, this extraordinary collection of early midwestern creative literature expresses a wide range of sometimes contradictory opinions on both the important questions of its day and the important questions of today: historical events such as the California Gold Rush of 1849 and the 1848 revolutions in Europe are considered alongside more timeless contemplations on truth, justice, and …
