The J. Paul Getty Museum is housed in a successful recreation of the Villa dei Papyri in Herculaneum. Of the various types of artwork and artifacts bequeathed to the modern world by antiquity and now among the Museum's holdings, however, there was until recently a gap whose filling would have made the correspondence between the two buildings even more nearly complete. There were no papyri in the Museum's collection even though the original Villa was named after its rich library of papyrus rolls, containing mostly Epicurean texts. In recent years archaeological investigators have become increasingly interested in the study of the Proto-Urban and Early Bronze Ages in Palestine. These periods have been relatively neglected in the history of excavating largely due to the fact that on the most important sites the levels of these periods lie buried beneath the later accumulation of the tells.

At sites where Early Bronze levels have been uncovered, little attention has been given to the domestic architecture, mostly due to the archaeologist’s predisposition to unearth temple complexes and public buildings in the acropolis area. The excavator’s have also been concerned to examine …

This article treats several problems in Epicurean atomic theory, including how atoms rebound (the answer is that they must keep moving at a uniform speed and simply move in another direction when impeded), the role of minima in defining the boundaries of an atom and accounting for its impenetrability and why adjacent atoms do not merge, and the explanation of atomic weight as a tendency of atoms emerging from collisions to move in a preferred direction, which is by definition “down.”

The book attempts a synthesis of several areas: the Homeric (a recap of Beyeʹs earlier Iliad, Odyssey and Epic Tradition, with some other material), forty pages of good background material on fifth‐century Athens, Herodotus and Thucydides, Tragedy (including Euripides), Comedy (also including Euripides. Justly, I think), and, for the sake of the contrast, Professor Beye includes the Alexandrian literature, a good choice. In this paper I try to establish the following differences between Epicurean and Lucretian psyches:

1. For Lucretius, the psyche is composed of particles of air, breath, heat, and a fourth unnamed constituent. Epicurus suggests that the psyche is composed of a single kind of atom, and that it in some way resembles heat and in some way resembles breath.

2. For Epicurus, breath and heat are properties of compounds, not kinds of atoms or kinds of compound entities. Lucretius apparently takes the opposite position.

3. For Lucretius, the components of the psyche seem to be entities larger than atoms.

We celebrate this year our nation's "birthday," but 1976 is also the bicentennial of what General Washington, a master of understatement, as well as, as we shall see, a master of strategy, called an "unhappy predicament." The commander-in-chief's solution to the predicament was the strategy that won the war, and put the United States on the way towards being a real country. This solution was the thoroughgoing adoption of Fabian strategy. Looking into what this was, and how Washington made it work, permits a better appreciation of Washington's real stature in military history.

What were the parts of the psyche posited by Plato in the Republic? The question calls not for a list but for an account of the grounds on which Plato posited and distinguished such parts. It calls for an account of their nature and role in his system.

We are not lacking in attempts at such an account. These parts have been termed "faculties", "principles", "activities", "aspects", "instances", and "levels" of the psyche. Their nature and role have been characterized in ways influenced as much perhaps by the connotations of these terms as by the details of Plato's text. …

I argued that Epicurus sought to infer all truths about what cannot be perceived (what is "non-apparent", adêlon) by using what is perceived (the "phenomena") as "signs" of what is non-apparent. This is an empirical method, based on the claim that sensory perception shows what is true. In the case of his basic physical doctrines, Epicurus argued by a reductio ad absurdum that if the negation of the doctrine were true, there would be a conflict with what we perceive. This applies to Epicurus' first two doctrines, that "nothing come to be from non-being" and that "nothing is destroyed …

Marriage among the Romans could occur at quite an early age, according to modern standards. Bethrothal might be arranged at any age above seven.1 The custom of early bethrothal and marriage certainly tended to discourage any romantic inclinations. If one did marry for love, generally it was with a widow or divorcee. The possibility of sentimental attachment among the very young was slight, but marriage to the Romans was not for love, but for duty to the state. Often the Romans had to rely on a post-marital propinquity for the development of love which normally precedes marriage.

In July 1976, a salvage excavation was conducted at Khirbat ’Ashan (Bir Abu Shukheidim) under the direction of R. Cohen, following erosion caused by the wadi and rainwater that affected the site. The excavation focused on the southern part of the site, near the banks of Nahal ’Ashan (’Ashan stream).

In 1955, an archaeological excavation was conducted at Tel Qasile in Tel Aviv (map ref. unknown), under the direction of J. Kaplan. The archive file records the exposure of a kiln for ceramic vessels' production, in the vicinity of which pottery sherds were recovered and dated to the tenth century BCE.

In 1976, a further excavation was carried out at Tel Qasile (map ref. 1806/6675), likewise under the direction of J. Kaplan. The archive file contains an excavation report of a Middle Bronze Age burial cave, together with a detailed inventory of the finds.
