It has since the early days of papyrology been noted, and hardly needs repeating before this assemblage, that the documentary papyri bring the scholar closer to the common man of antiquity than can ever be possible through the literary sources that have been transmitted through the medieval manuscript tradition. The papyri provide numerous, if scattered, unselfconscious testimonies to the everyday activities of life, while the literature tends to focus on the deeds and to reflect the biases of men of power, wealth and literary culture. In October 1980, a salvage excavation was conducted at a site near the southern bank of the ʻAda Stream channel, close to Or ʻAqiva (map. ref. 19401/71144), under the direction of A. Zigelman and S. Yankelevich. A section of a structure belonging to the settlement was uncovered, which the excavators dated to the Persian and Hellenistic periods.

In 1980, an excavation was conducted at Tel Qedesh, on the north-facing slope (map ref. 249600/780025), under the direction of D. Amir. The aim of the excavation was to clarify the stratigraphy and chronological sequence of the layers previously exposed by Y. Aharoni in 1953. From the top of the section down the slope, a series of pits were excavated in which remains of a mudbrick wall — identified by Aharoni — were revealed. This wall had previously been exposed in a section created during the construction of the “Northern Road” and was dated to the Early Bronze Age I–II.

P.Oxy. 2479 is an unusual document in that, while it concerns an ?vaixOYpacpoe yecopyo?, it does not fit into either of the two classes of documents to which mentions of evaTioypacpoi yecopyot are otherwise almost exclusively restricted ? sureties and receipts for parts of agricultural machinery. ' It is instead a petition to his landlord from an evajioypacpoQ yecopyo? who had absented himself from his farm for three years and who has now asked for re-instate ment. The body of the text is written, as the editor observes, "in a straggling sixth-century hand with a marked inclination to the right." …

When Virgil began to write the "lliadic" half of his Aeneid, he enjoyed a great deal more freedom in setting up its action than had Homer, whose characters' lots were generally predetermined by received myth as surely as by any Fate. As a result, it is possible to achieve keen insight into Virgil's poetic design in the Aeneid by examining the particular cast he has given to the poem's action or specific variations he has introduced into his literary models.

The Socratic Problem: Some Second Thoughts, Eric A. Havelock

In this paper, Havelock argues that the distinction between "early" "middle" and "late" dialogues makes little sense. All of the dialogues are Plato's construction; there is no reason to accept any of them as intended to be accurate representations of the historical Socrates. The Apology, often taken as a faithful representation of the historical Socrates, is rather a genre piece, in the tradition of Gorgias' Palamedes. Compare Isocrates' Antidosis. Havelock takes the movement from the orality of Socrates to the literacy of Plato as critical movement in the Athenian thought.

The evidence of the surviving literature and structure provides this chronology for the development of concrete: Fronto dates for us, by naming consuls, two aqueducts utterly devoid of concrete at 312 and 272 B.C. From Cato, who died in 149 B.C., we can discern that (a) concrete has now become the normal foundation for building, (b) limeburning is now an established trade, and (c) his recipe for cement is primitive-—even medieval—-and non-hydraulic. The year 140 saw the opening of the Marcian Aqueduct, its water-channel lined in non-hydraulic cement. Vitruvius, ca. 25 B.C., describes different cement formulations for different purposes, even …

Purchased in the Fayûm in 1925, this papyrus contains the top part of a petition addressed by one Philoxenus possibly (far from certainly) to the governor of the province of Arcadia; see line 3 note. Surviving are (in part) the address (lines 1-4); a short proem (lines 5-8), virtually complete; and the beginning of the narrative of events leading up to the petition (lines 8-13). On palaeographic grounds I should be inclined to assign this piece to the sixth century.
