PSI VIII 935, a receipt acknowledging payment of rent for land near the village of Phthla, was published in 1927. The editor in commenting on the text sought to connect it with two other papyri, both of them Phthla land leases: P. Flor. III 281 (A.D. 517) and P. Cair. Masp. I 67113 (dating clause lost at top). A third, related land lease is P. Lond. V 1689 (527). These three papyri form a small archive not obviously integral to the main set of papyri issuing from Aphrodite (modern Kom Ischkaw) and preserved in the sixth-century archive of Flavius Dioscorus. …

Dissertations and Theses

Various interpretations of the Germanic invasions of the early Middle Ages have been advanced. These present to the student of historiography a fertile field for inquiry. In this thesis the interpretations of the Germanic invasions propounded by Jules Michelet (1798-1874) and Gustav Freytag (1816-1875) are examined with a view to establishing the cultural context in which their mutually exclusive versions were formulated, and the extent to which that context lent the interpretations of both writers a perceptible national and aesthetic bias.

This thesis consists of five basic units: a general history of the cylinder seal, a discussion of the seals on an artistic level, a general history of Palestine at the time the seals were being made, and Late Bronze Age cylinder seals as indicators of cultural influence. There are four appendices which include typology, a catalogue of cylinder seals, a glossary and plates.

The paper I presented at the SAGP session was NOT the same as my much longer paper that was subsequently published in Oxford Studies, where I had by then established a fuller philosophical accounting of Epicurean prolepsis as akin to non-conceptual pattern recognition, a purely perceptual facility used by humans and other animals alike. (In this way, my dog recognizes other dogs and distinguishes them from other animals, just as we recognize kinds of things in nature and kinds of situations in our socializing, before we conceptualize and define what we are already habituated to recognizing.) In "Parmenides Unbound," Philosophical Inquiry 2.1 (1980) 345-360, Matson argues that the accomplishment of Parmenides was the fundamental philosophical distinction between what is known certainly by pure reason and, on the other hand, the domain of (mere?) experience. In this paper Matson argues that Zeno's paradoxes are meant to demonstrate the incoherence of Pythagorean philosophy, for example that the arguments of the Pythagoreans commit them to the unreality of motion, a reductio argument. He takes Melissus as directing his arguments against Heracliteans.

The papyri of the Roman Empire have not yet been subjected to the kinds of systematic scholarly enterprises to which the Ptolemaic papyri have been subjected. There is, for example, no comprehensive prosopography comparable to the Prosopographia Ptolemaica, and it is, I think, senseless to start one. What the student of the Roman imperial period has at his disposal is lists of assorted officials, functionaries, and military personnel. In the attempt to ascertain man's changes in world view, the Orestes stories of the Greek tragedians were compared with the Orestes stories of six 20th-century playwrights. The Orestes plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides were contrasted with the similar plays of Hofmannstahl, Jeffers, O'Neill, Giraudoux, Eliot, and Sartre. The Greek tragedians appear to terminate Orestes' retribution for inherited evil and a just crime by an actual, total, restorative redemption, divinely instigated. The 20th century playwrights portray only the potential termination of Orestes' retribution in a distant future, by means of a salvation that is self-instigated, costly, and completely non-restorative. …

The subject of this paper is the Gawain poet and his monumental poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The concern will not be with the poet's identity or social rank, but will instead be with his motives. In some places this paper will appear to work backwards, assuming that since a certain effect was achieved, it must have been intended, but that is not an uncommon assumption in literary criticism.

I shall argue that the function of the reproductive capacity is not to perpetuate the kind (or species), but to allow the individual reproducer to be eternal: not eternal without qualifications, but in a way. The basic premise in the arguments which establish this conclusion distinguishes between things which are numerically eternal and those which are formally eternal. This of this latter sort must be members of an everlasting series of individuals which are one-in-form (ἕν εἴδει, in Aristotle's usage). The full understanding of these passages, therefore, requires a proper interpretation of the distinction between numerical and formal unity. with …

In August 1982, a salvage excavation was conducted south of Kibbutz Nirim, about one km northwest of the Ma’on synagogue (map ref. 1432/5821), following the discovery of pottery and architectural elements during tree planting by the Jewish National Fund. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by I. Eldar, with the assistance of Y. Segal (Surveying).

Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In July–December 1982, salvage excavations were conducted at the Neve Noy neighborhood of Be'er Sheva, near the Bir Safadi site (map ref. 1789/5709). The excavations were directed by Y. Baumgarten and I. Eldar. Eight subterranean units that had been hewn in the loess soil were exposed, which were dated to the Chalcolithic period. Around them were many refuse pits containing pottery vessels, flint flakes, pebbles and ash. The entrances to the subterranean structures were through courtyards, from which tunnels branched out into rooms, most of which were square. Additional tunnels were also exposed, which widened at the end to form …

Horace, Maecenas And Odes 2.17, Emily A. Mcdermott

Few of Horace's Odes have occasioned as little recent critical commentary as his poetic pledge to die along with Maecenas. Although a profitable direction for analysis was indicated by Meineke's outraged condemnation of the fourth stanza and PEERLKAMP'S even earlier obelization of a full five of the poem's eight stanzas, the road most commonly taken by critics has been to ignore this ode altogether, or to mention it in passing only. Of the most recent studies on Horace, only FRAENKEL and (necessarily) NISBET and HUBBARD'S exhaustive commentary on Odes II meet the poem head on.
