Landscape And Change In Three Novels By Theodor Fontane, Jane Ellen Speerstra May 1988

Landscape And Change In Three Novels By Theodor Fontane, Jane Ellen Speerstra

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis traces and explicates the changes in Theodor Fontane's landscape depiction in the years 1887-1892. I examine his novels Cécile (1887), Irrungen, Wirrungen (1888), and Unwiederbringlich (1892). I show that Fontane, as though discarding a relic of the Romantic past, used increasingly less landscape in his narratives. He focused on the actions and conversation of his characters, and on their immediate surroundings. When these surroundings were urban, they tended to disappear. The progressive minimalization of landscape, and of cityscape in particular, foreshadowed the appearance in German literature of twentieth-century man: man alienated from nature in cities, and less aware …

A New Look At The Ergon Argument In The Nicomachean Ethics, Alfonso Gomez-Lobo Apr 1988

A New Look At The Ergon Argument In The Nicomachean Ethics, Alfonso Gomez-Lobo

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

It is commonly assumed that the ergon argument consists in an inference which starts from the powers specific or peculiar to man and arrives at a definition of the human good. This would commit Aristotle to some form of naturalism which is either fallacious or at least not available to us because we cannot share his views about human nature. The purpose of the present paper is to show that this interpretation is unsatisfactory. Aristotle's argument is based on a general principle which may be reformulated as follows: "For any x, if x has an ergon y_, then x will …

An Analysis Of Early Woodland Pottery From Southwest Michigan, James W. Cogswell Apr 1988

An Analysis Of Early Woodland Pottery From Southwest Michigan, James W. Cogswell

Masters Theses

Significant amounts of Early Woodland pottery have been recovered from excavations in southwest Michigan. Radiocarbon and thermoluminescence assays date this pottery from 590 B.C. to A.D. 10. This pottery is analyzed in great detail, providing evidence for attributes heretofore unreported in the Great Lakes area. Selected vessel attributes are presented in a chronological framework, and potential trends in the regional development of Early Woodland pottery are discussed.

Existence Claims In The Posterior Analytics, Richard D. Mckirahan Jr.

Existence Claims in the Posterior Analytics

Richard McKirahan

This paper treats several questions about the place of existence claims in theory of science presented in the Posterior Analytics. On the basis of a close reading of the text it shows that Aristotle identifies existence claims as a distinct kind of scientific principles (alongside definitions and common principles), that what these principles declare to exist are the subjects as opposed to the attributes that the science studies (triangles, as opposed to the property of having angles equal to two right angles), and not all the subjects, but a subset of them, …

Review: Seneca: Moral Epistles, John F. Makowski Mar 1988

Review: Seneca: Moral Epistles, John F. Makowski

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Here is a handy selection of forty of Seneca's most important Epistulae Morales presented in an attractive format with running and end vocabularies, notes, and a brief introduction to the author's life, thought, and style. Designed as "a rapid reader", the volume is geared toward the college student and provides a well chosen sampling of letters illuminating Senecan epistolary technique, late Roman Stoicism, and the social history of the Neronian age. The book is very different in tone and purpose from Summers' edition of 1910 and does not mean to provide a commentary of either depth or sophistication. One will …

A Christian Letter From The Michigan Collection, James G. Keenan Jan 1988

A Christian Letter From The Michigan Collection, James G. Keenan

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The papyrus edited below, P.Mich. inv. 3999, was purchased for the University of Michigan in 1925. It belongs to lot IV of the Nahman papyri, all of which come from Oxyrhynchus. The papyrus measures (roughly) 12 cm. (width) by 25 cm. (height). Margins are small at top (0.8 cm.) and (until line 19) at left (0.5 cm., discounting the vertical strip whose partial remains appear opposite lines 8-13). The prayer (lines 20-24) below the letter's body is indented at the left ca. 2.5 cm. inward from the mu of mhd°no!, the first word in line 19 (therefore ca. 3.0 cm. …

Creative Involvement With The Texts: Bernhard Goetz And The Ancient Historians, Paula Saffire Jan 1988

Creative Involvement With The Texts: Bernhard Goetz And The Ancient Historians, Paula Saffire

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In the words of the famous Molly Malone, what any teacher wants is for the classics to be "alive alive-o." The question is: how? I hope Plato and Aeschylus, Catullus and Tacitus, will not be insulted by my posing the question. They are undoubtedly alive to us, who have devoted ourselves to reading the classics in the original. But for students new to the classics, able to approach them only in translation or wrestling with basic problems of language, the question does exist: how to make their experience of the classical texts a living one.

P. Cair. Masp. Ii 67135, James G. Keenan Jan 1988

P. Cair. Masp. Ii 67135, James G. Keenan

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The rent receipt, P.Cair.Masp. II 67135, was revised and re-edited by Gertrude Malz, Studi in onore diA. Calderini e R. Paribeni, II, pp. 351-52. The revision was based on parallel texts in P.Cair.Masp. III 67327 and PSI VIII 935 and facilitated by plate II at the back of P.Cair.Masp. II. Unfortunately, an important fragment of the papyrus as reproduced in the plate was positioned too high, see plate (a) below. It is of course possible visually to reposition the fragment when attempting to compare the text--as Malz did with good effect, and as I myself tried when proposing further revisions …

Qiryat Ata A-1544/1988, Yosef Porath

Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In August 1988, a salvage excavation was carried out in the courtyard of a residential property on Ha-Meyasdim Street in Qiryat Ata (map ref. 2102/7455), under the direction of Y. Porath. The excavation was initiated following the discovery of ancient settlement remains during preparations for modern construction, in proximity to another plot where remains of a settlement and an olive press had previously been uncovered.

Classical Allusion In The Count Of Monte Cristo, Emily A. Mcdermott

Stamped Greek Amphora Handles In Israel, Thomas C. Seawright Jan 1988

Stamped Greek Amphora Handles In Israel, Thomas C. Seawright

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis provides a data base of the sites in Israel at which stamped Greek amphora handles have been found and an index of the Greek names used in the stamps. The index is intended to be a guide only, to point out the publications which should be examined for more detailed information. The thesis illustrates the use of the data base and index to prepare catalogues of stamped amphora handles by supplementing published listings of stamped handles from Caesara Maritima that were never previously published. The data base also lists the sites, in descending numerical order by number of …

Husbands And Gods As Shadowbrutes: Beauty And The Beast From Apuleius To C. S. Lewis, Gwenyth Hood Jan 1988

Husbands And Gods As Shadowbrutes: Beauty And The Beast From Apuleius To C. S. Lewis, Gwenyth Hood

English Faculty Research

In the center of his long narrative, The Metamorphoses, (translated by Robert Graves under the title The Golden Ass) and composing a large part of the story, Apuleius inserts the tale of "Cupid and Psyche." Like most of the tales interwoven into the narrative, it had been popular before his time, and many parallel tales exist in the folklore of widely separated cultures. The most famous modem version is the French tale, "Beauty and the Beast" which inspires popular artists to this day. The myth also underlies the genre of the gothic romance, for example, Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre …

The Symbolism Of The Eye In Mesopotamia And Israel, Helen L. Seawright Jan 1988

The Symbolism Of The Eye In Mesopotamia And Israel, Helen L. Seawright

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis explores eye symbolism within the context of the art forms of the Ancient Near East, including pottery, sculpture, idols of amulets, seals, cuneiform texts and the literature of the Old Testament. The central concern in this study is to bring together under one cover the iconography of the eye and its meaning from the cultures of Mesopotamia and Israel. The human eye has been a symbol for good or evil from earliest times. This thesis shows that the Mesopotamians focused mainly on the negative aspects of the eye in their belief system, while the Israelites focused on its …

Ancient Mesopotamian Concepts Of Death And The Netherworld According To Ancient Literary Texts, John William David Mcmaster Jan 1988

Ancient Mesopotamian Concepts Of Death And The Netherworld According To Ancient Literary Texts, John William David Mcmaster

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis attempts to elucidate the concepts of death and the netherworld found within Sumerian and Semitic literary texts. This particular topic has received very little attention in the past but studies of a similar nature have tended to take a fairly general approach dealing with Mesopotamian concepts in their entirety. Sumerian and Semitic cultures have not been distinguished due to the large number of similarities which were seen to exist between their societies, cultures, and religious ideas. More recently, however, such a methodological procedure has been found to exist within the literature of the two cultures. With this in …

Dust To Dust: Aristotle's Account Of Generation And Desctruction, Mary Louise Gill Dec 1987

Dust To Dust: Aristotle's Account Of Generation And Desctruction, Mary Louise Gill

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

I believe Aristotle could endorse God’s statement to Adam as reflecting his own theory of generation and destruction. Complex bodies, such as living organisms, are generated out of earth, and to earth they will ultimately return. In this paper I will argue that Aristotle defends a cyclical model of generation and destruction which starts and ends with some simple stuff. I will call the model the ''construction model." The construction model underlies many of Aristotle’s claims about substantial generation and destruction, but he presents the main theory in Metaphysics H.5, a text that is curiously neglected in recent discussions of …

Ethical Method In Aristotle: Setting Out The Phainomena, Daniel T. Devereux Dec 1987

Ethical Method In Aristotle: Setting Out The Phainomena, Daniel T. Devereux

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

My chief objective here is the task of setting out and clarifying the data that we need to consider in giving an account of Aristotle's method in ethics. These data are more complex than is usually supposed. I argue that it may be quite misleading to speak of the method of endoxa as the dialectical method, and that it is a mistake to think that there are close parallels between this method and the concept of dialectic discussed in the Topics.
