Were The Neoplatonists Itealists Or Realists?, John Bussanich Mar 1992

Were The Neoplatonists Itealists Or Realists?, John Bussanich

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Although it is relatively uncontroversial to characterize all Platonists as metaphysical idealists or immaterialists, the ascription to some of them of explicit arguments for epistemological idealism is controversial and problematic. It will be necessary to consider Neoplatonic attitudes toward perception of an external material world, but also the direct intellectual "perception" of the Forms.

Textual, Structural, And Interpretive Problems In Horace Carm. 4.2, John T. Kirby Jan 1992

Textual, Structural, And Interpretive Problems In Horace Carm. 4.2, John T. Kirby

Classics Articles and Papers

Two closely-linked problems - one textual, the other interpretive - have long bedevilled readers of Horace Carm. 4.2.45-52. The first involves the text of line 49, which was conjectura1ly emended in the OCT of Wickham and Garrod, and has actually been obelised by Shackleton Bailey in his Teubner. The second problem concerns the addressee of o Sol pulcher, o laudande in lines 46-7.

I would like in this essay, first, to discuss the spectrum of emendations proposed for line 49; second, to sketch out a structural analysis of the entire ode, inot which lines 45-52 will fit sensibly; and third, …

A Constantinople Loan, A.D. 541, James G. Keenan Jan 1992

A Constantinople Loan, A.D. 541, James G. Keenan

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Nearly all the Greek papyri from Egypt concern the people of upcountry villages and towns--Syene, Aphrodito, Hermopolis, Oxyrhynchus, to mention several of the most important late antique sites. Rarely do the papyri broach the "exchangist world" of Fernand Braudel or S. D. Goitein with their thriving cities, long-distance trade, and commerical banking.2 Alexandria finds relatively frequent mention in the papyri, but cities beyond Egypt are rarely mentioned, and in the late antique period even the imperial capital, Constantinople, comes into play only a handful of times. No doubt this is because the ancient economy, and Egypt's most especially, was founded …

Cypriot Marks On Mycenaean Pottery, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Most signs incised into Late Helladic/Late Minoan III pottery are related in form and method of application, as well as the types of vessels to which they are applied and the chronological range and distribution of those vessels. The signs are almost always incised after firing, generally into the handles of large transport/storage vessels : stirrup jars (both coarse and fine-ware varieties) or a particular piriform jar shape (FS 36). With few exceptions, the Aegean vessels with incised marks which can be closely dated by either ceramic typology or stratigraphical context fall within LH IIIA-B; of those which can be …

4q364 & 365: A Preliminary Report, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

4Q364 and 365, part of the group of compositions (4Q364, 365, 366 and 367) provisionally entitled 4Q Pentateuchal Paraphrases, are part of the lot of Qumran manuscripts originally assigned to John Strugnell for publication. Strugnell, in 1989, asked me to join my colleague, Professor Emanuel Tov of the Hebrew University, in preparing these manuscripts for publication. This paper serves as an introduction and first statement on these manuscripts.

4Q364 and 365 are preserved on 20 plates of material, which contain about 150 fragments of text. The fragments range in size from two columns, preserving 15 lines, to fragments containing no …

The Ferrymen Of Elysium: Nostratic Eschatology And The Homeric Phaeacians, Erwin F. Cook Jan 1992

The Ferrymen Of Elysium: Nostratic Eschatology And The Homeric Phaeacians, Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Belief that the Homeric Phaeacians belong to the afterlife is old; but its supporters have always found themselves in the minority. Friedrich Welcker, who first argued the point in 1833, held that the Phaeacians were ferrymen of the dead, and that Scheria was set in or near Elysium. Wilamowitz accepted Welcker's identification of the Phaeacians, and maintained that Arete and Alcinous were modeled on the underworld rulers Persephone and Hades. Rehearsal of the arguments advanced by these scholars reveals that the evidence has been incompletely and on occasion incorrectly applied; however, a modified version of their theory is still viable …

Dating An Ill-Fated Journey: Synesius, Ep. 5, Jacqueline Long Jan 1992

Dating An Ill-Fated Journey: Synesius, Ep. 5, Jacqueline Long

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Synesius passed his life as one of the most important men in Cyrene. He was born into a wealthy family that claimed descent from the founding Heraclids (e.g. Catast. 303A). On one occasion he was chosen as Cyrene's ambassador to the imperial court at Constantinople. During this period the revolts of Tribigild and Gamnas toppled Eutropius from seemingly absolute power behind Arcadius' throne; Synesius watched national politics unfold from a distinctive perspective, which he recorded in his De Regno and De Providentia. They are unquestionably important historical sources, but interpretation of them is complicated by the erudition and Neoplatonic philosophy …

The Truth Of Antiphon's 'Truth', Michael Gagarin Dec 1991

The Truth Of Antiphon's 'Truth', Michael Gagarin

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

My intention in this paper is to explore some of the implications of the fact that the fifth century sophistic thinker Antiphon entitled his main "sophistic" treatise, published in two books. Truth (Alêtheia). As in the case of Protagoras' treatise of the same name, this title may be understood as an indication that Antiphon is responding to Parmenides' "Way o f Truth" and is affirming his own view of the truth about the world, that physis is more real or truer than nomos, or in other words, statements are true if and only if they correspond to physis, but not …

Some Ways Of Being In Plato, Allan Silverman Dec 1991

Some Ways Of Being In Plato, Allan Silverman

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

I propose to examine on this occasion three closely related issues in the interpretation of Plato's metaphysics, the separation of Forms, participation, and the nature of particulars. In the compass of this talk, I cannot do justice to all three of these issues, indeed probably to none of them. A fortiori, I cannot do a semblance of justice to the closely related topics of predication, both ontological and linguistic; the status of Aristotle's remarks about Plato's metaphysics and his own treatment of these issues, or the vexing problem of the development of Plato’s thinking. Nonetheless, I cannot avoid these topics. …

The Spanish Chapel Of Santa Maria Novella: A Document Of Dominican Dogma, Dale Hoover

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous scholarship has suggested that the frescoes of the Spanish Chapel at Santa Maria Novella in Florence were influenced by the celebration of Corpus Domini and by the philosophy of st. Thomas Aquinas. Although scholars have agreed that such influences exist, few have demonstrated, the supposed relationships among frescoed images and Aquinas' words or Corpus Domini's text. This study presents an analysis of the frescoes in the terms of Aquinas' stated ~hilosophy and the text for the mass of Corpus Domini. The frescoes contain images of Aquinas enthroned and Aquinas teaching. The image of Aquinas enthroned above figures representing theological and …

The Cognitive Status Of Risk: A Response To Thompson, L. James Valverde

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Discussing the role that probability theory should play in Risk analysis and management, Dr. Valverde argues that Thompson's approach puts too much emphasis on the distinction between Risk subjectivism and Risk objectivism in addressing the question, "When are Risks real?"

Review: Senecan Drama And Stoic Cosmology, John F. Makowski Sep 1991

Review: Senecan Drama And Stoic Cosmology, John F. Makowski

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This is a difficult book, at times distracting in style and organization and at others brimming with original insights. The dust-cover announces a double goal: to explore stoic cosmology in the tragedies of Seneca and to relate these dramas to subsequent European theater. The book is in two parts. The first, perplexingly entitled "The Canon at Risk" (what canon? what risk?), reviews earlier studies of stoicism in the plays of Seneca, while the second analyzes in the tragedies themselves elements of stoic cosmology such as sumpatheia, krasis, and ekpyrosis. Rosenmeyer provides a needed balance to earlier studies that have focused …

The Judicial Message In Seneca's Apocolocyntosis, Sylvia Gray Kaplan May 1991

The Judicial Message In Seneca's Apocolocyntosis, Sylvia Gray Kaplan

Dissertations and Theses

Seneca's Apocolocyatosis is a satire on the deceased emperor Claudius, probably written in the early months after his death in AD54. Although the authorship and title of the work have been called into question, scholars have now reached a consensus that the satire was written by Seneca and is titled "Apocolocyatosis." Its purpose, characteristic of the Menippean genre, was didactic.

Although the meaning of the Apocolocyatosis has often been discussed, few have emphasized the predominance of the legal theme, when in fact the legal motif is the key to interpreting this work. The work satirizes Claudius particularly in …

Review: One Hundred Years Of Homosexuality: And Other Essays On Greek Love, John F. Makowski May 1991

Review: One Hundred Years Of Homosexuality: And Other Essays On Greek Love, John F. Makowski

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This, the most significant study of Greek homosexuality since the pioneering work of K. J. Dover, does not aim for an exhaustive or systematic treatment of Greek love but rather to formulate a theory of the erotics of male homosexuality and to apply it to a selected number of aspects in literature, philosophy, and Athenian social life. Accordingly, part one presents a lucid exposition of the two currently competing theories of homosexuality, essentialism and constructionism. Halperin is firmly in the camp of the latter and argues forcefully that homosexuality, and indeed all sexuality, is a social construct rather than an …

The Birth Of Logic, John Corcoran Apr 1991

The Birth Of Logic, John Corcoran

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The last two decades have witnessed a debate concerning whether Aristotle's syllogistic is a system of deductive discourses having epistemic import exemplifying an Aristotelian theory of deductive reasoning and justifying the claim that Aristotle is the founder of logic taken as the scientific study of proof or whether, on the contrary, the syllogistic is a system of true propositions of a theory of classes justifying the claim that Aristotle is the founder of logic is taken as the scientific study of formal relations such as class inclusion. An epistemically-oriented interpretation has been contending with an ontically-oriented interpretation. This debate should …

Plato On The Souls Of Beasts, Eve Browning (Cole) Apr 1991

Plato On The Souls Of Beasts, Eve Browning (Cole)

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Although Plato's emphasis on rationality and calculative reason, along with his faith in the soul's immortality, place him well to mark a clear-cut distinction between the human and the beast, that clear distinction is somewhat difficult to locate. While there is no strong evidence that Plato was inclined to attribute human-like cognitive capabilities to animals, the absence of extended textual engagements with animal cognition make this an uncertain issue. And in the moral domain, there do seem to be texts which suggest that a kind of natural virtue may be found among animals. These appear in the Laws. and are …
