Aristotle On The Principles Of Perceptible Body (Gen. Corr. 2.1-3), David E. Hahm Apr 1993

Aristotle On The Principles Of Perceptible Body (Gen. Corr. 2.1-3), David E. Hahm

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

With his clarification of the philosophical significance of the Pre- Socratic theories of elements Aristotle completes his discussion of the principles of perceptible bodies. He had embarked on this subject with the intent of explaining the first bodies and their role as principles of genesis and destruction. Jumping off from the theories of the Ionian philosophers who first proposed simple elemental bodies as principles of change, he probed behind these to discover even more fundamental principles, one of which was anticipated by another Ionian and by his teacher Plato. These ultimate principles will become for Aristotle the foundation of all …

Socrates' Aspasian Oration: The Play Of Philosophy And Politics In Plato's Menexenus, Stephen G. Salkever Mar 1993

Socrates' Aspasian Oration: The Play Of Philosophy And Politics In Plato's Menexenus, Stephen G. Salkever

Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Plato's Menexenus is overlooked, perhaps because of the difficulty of gauging its irony. In it, Socrates recites a funeral oration he says he learned from Aspasia, describing events that occurred after the deaths of both Socrates and Pericles' mistress. But the dialogue's ironic complexity is one reason it is a central part of Plato's political philosophy. In both style and substance, Menexenus rejects the heroic account of Athenian democracy proposed by Thucydides' Pericles, separating Athenian citizenship from the quest for immortal glory; its picture of the relationship of philosopher to polis illustrates Plato's conception of the true politikos in the …

Shades Of Borges: The Construction Of Identity In 'The Mirror And The Mask', Timothy Baland Jan 1993

Shades Of Borges: The Construction Of Identity In 'The Mirror And The Mask', Timothy Baland

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Shades of Borges is an explication of "The Mirror and The Mask" using theories, terminologies, and methodologies presented by Jean Baudrillard and Michel Foucault. In the story, the king of Ireland orders his court poet to compose three successive odes, each surpassing its predecessor. The story ends with the death of the bard and the disenthronement of the king. The thesis analyzes the differences and similarities between the individual poems using Baudrillard's theories of the four "successive phases of the image" and the ascension of simulation over representation. The transition within the story from merely representational discourse to discourse that …

'Αaάτος At Odyssey 22.5: Greek And Indo-European Oaths, Marianina Demetri Olcott Jan 1993

'Αaάτος At Odyssey 22.5: Greek And Indo-European Oaths, Marianina Demetri Olcott

Faculty Publications

The meaning of the word ἀάατος at Homer's Odyssey 22.5 becomes clearer examined in conjunction with its occurrence at Iliad 14.271 where it is used as an epithet of the river Styx. Further discussion, by locating the word within the context of IE ordeal rituals, Greek cosmogony and the pre-IE mythology of Greek Arcadia, reveals a complex theology amalgamated from these different sources.

My Dinner With Socrates: Literary Shaping Of Philosophy In Plato And Dostoevsky, Bob Simmons Jan 1993

My Dinner With Socrates: Literary Shaping Of Philosophy In Plato And Dostoevsky, Bob Simmons

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This study examines the philosophical impact of literary techniques on Plato's dialogues. Incorporating phenomenological literary theory and illustrating Plato's dramatic form and imperfect philosophical argumentation in terms of similar usages in Dostoevsky's novels, it notes an intonation of reader interaction playing a significant role in the shaping of any philosophical message that is to be taken from the dialogues. It concludes that the dialogues, like Dostoevsky's novels, play with reader's expectations of the genres of "philosophy" and "literature" and the outcomes suitable to each to frustrate their readers' search for answers in the text and thus to engage them in …

Review Of: The Redaction Of The Books Of Esther: On Reading Composite Texts, By Michael V. Fox., Sidnie White Crawford Jan 1993

Review Of: The Redaction Of The Books Of Esther: On Reading Composite Texts, By Michael V. Fox., Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The Redaction of the Books of Esther: On Reading Composite Texts, by Michael V. Fox. SBLMS 40. Atlanta: Scholars Press, 1991. Pp. x + 195. $29.95118.95 (18.95112.95 member).

Michael Fox's excellent monograph is an exemplary redaction critical study of several witnesses to the book of Esther. The goal of the study, according to the author, is "to advance our understanding of the redactional process in general by studying the development of two particular representatives of the Esther tradition, the AT (Alpha text) and the MT (p. 6). Both of these texts, Fox argues, are redactions of previous works: the …

Calvin’S Jewish Interlocutor: Christian Hebraism And Anti-Jewish Polemics During The Reformation, Stephen G. Burnett Jan 1993

Calvin’S Jewish Interlocutor: Christian Hebraism And Anti-Jewish Polemics During The Reformation, Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The nature of Calvin’s tractate Reponse to questions and objections of a certain Jew (Ad quaestiones et obiecta Judaei cuiusdam responsio) has long been a matter of some dispute among Calvin scholars. The nineteenth-century editors of Calvin’s works considered the book to be “meager and weak,” no doubt assuming that Calvin was responsible for composing both the questions and answers. In the twentieth century, scholars have been more inclined to see some evidence of an actual dispute between a Jew and a Christian in the book. Most notably Salo Baron suggested that the work reflects an exchange that Josel of …

Maimonides And Analogy, Stephen E. Lahey Jan 1993

Maimonides And Analogy, Stephen E. Lahey

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Does the predication of a relation between two things imply that each of the relata have attributes predicable as well? In Volume I, Ch. 52 of The Guide of the Perplexed, Maimonides discusses this, and he seems to imply that it does. I will argue, using Aristotle’s discussion of relativity as a predicate in Bk. 5, Ch. 15 of Metaphysics, that it does not, and I shall use this to discuss the consequent improved utility of an analogy Maimonides constructs between God and creatures in I.53. To do this, I shall need to recount a logic of analogy for Maimonides …

Area A, located at the northwestern edge of the tell and along its descending slope, revealed four stratigraphic layers.

Three Deuteronomy Manuscripts From Cave 4, Qumran, Sidnie White Crawford Jan 1993

Three Deuteronomy Manuscripts From Cave 4, Qumran, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to present three hitherto unpublished manuscripts (part of the twenty-one Deuteronomy manuscripts from Cave 4, Qumran): 4QDta, 4QDtd, and 4QDtg. These three manuscripts are placed together in this article because each has a particular feature of interest: 4QDta is the oldest of the Cave 4 Deuteronomy manuscripts; 4QDtd contains a very defective orthography; and 4QDtg presents a text identical to that of the Masoretic text. In the body of the article, each manuscript is presented separately, beginning with a description of the physical characteristics of each manuscript. This description is followed by a complete …
