Having chosen particular, concrete challenges faced by medical patients, student teams collaborate to conduct in-depth user research and problem identification, develop potentially marketable solutions and create prototype products. “The solutions these teams create are consistently remarkable and effective,” says Bon Ku, MD, assistant dean for health and design at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

A Design For Mitigating Patient Hypothermia Jan 2022

A Design For Mitigating Patient Hypothermia

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

General anesthesia during surgery can impair the body’s autonomic temperature regulation and lead to patients having dangerously low body temperature. That, in turn, increases an array of clinical risks, including poor wound healing and infection, excess blood loss, cardiac arrhythmias and impaired renal function. Unfortunately, current surgical gowns— which have very little thermal capability—provide no significant protection against heat loss.

For that reason, a cross-disciplinary team of Jefferson students and faculty—with expertise in anesthesiology, mechanical engineering, textile engineering, textile technology and fashion design—is creating a new type of patient garment that is intended to mitigate the problem of surgically related …

Invasive Plants For Commercial Use Jan 2022

Invasive Plants For Commercial Use

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

Invasive plants can have an array of negative ecological effects. In Northeast deciduous forests, for example, invasive plants outcompete natives, disrupt soil nutrient cycling and spread disease that affects humans as well as other plants.

“Invasives are creating increasingly difficult problems across the United States,” says Anne Bower, PhD, professor of biology. “While there are some public and nonprofit efforts to address those problems, we also need to employ free market incentives to overcome this major ecological challenge.” Dr. Bower, Mary Ann Wagner-Graham, PhD, assistant professor of biology, and Becky Flax, MS, assistant professor of textile design, have been working …

Putting Light To Work Jan 2022

Putting Light To Work

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

Jefferson researchers are using light in new ways: using blue light to drive chemical processes, and creating products that illuminate in ultraviolet light. Their work reflects a convergence of disciplines such as physics, chemistry, textile engineering and nanotechnology that is driving applications with practical benefits for people and the environment.

John Milligan, PhD, assistant professor of chemical and biological sciences, is leading development of environmentally sustainable ways to spur chemical reactions using blue LED light. The work is an example of the “photoredox” subfield of organic chemistry, which has proven to be an increasingly effective method for building organic molecules. …

Architecture, Design And Corporate Modernism

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

How have business strategies, modern architecture and urban conditions helped shape American corporations’ ambitious branding goals? Grace Ong Yan, PhD, assistant professor of interior design, addresses that question in her book Building Brands: Corporations and Modern Architecture.

Ong Yan is an architectural historian who explores modernism and how media and the built environment intersect. Earlier in her career, she practiced interior design and architecture with Renzo Piano Building Workshop; Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners and the Gensler New York branding studio. Her book unites her scholarship and design expertise to consider the role of architectural branding in the design of …

Architects Of A Sustainable Hemp Industry Jan 2022

Architects Of A Sustainable Hemp Industry

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

For centuries, the hemp plant has been recognized as a robust and renewable source of raw material for a host of purposes. However, for decades United States law conflated hemp with marijuana, and it fell out of use. Now, with such restrictions lifted, hemp has a bright future as a sustainable, high-value raw material for consumer and industrial products.

“Realizing that potential will require a lot of fundamental planning and development work, conceiving and establishing systems and platforms essential for building robust agricultural- and manufacturing-focused hemp industries,” says Ronald Kander, PhD, associate provost for applied research and dean of Kanbar …

Functional Fabrics: From Mining Oceans To Walking In Space Jan 2022

Functional Fabrics: From Mining Oceans To Walking In Space

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

Thomas Jefferson University traces its ancestry, in part, to the 1884 founding of the Philadelphia Textile School, the nation’s first center for textilefocused education. That institution continued to be a pioneer in textile science, technology and innovation for more than 130 years. Today, that legacy is visible in an array of nationally and globally recognized textile-related academic and research programs—notably including research, analysis and development of “functional fabrics” that serve a broadening range of purposes.

Jefferson is one of the few academic institutions possessing the full scope of expertise and technical facilities needed to reduce fundamental ideas to practice. As …

Rediscovering Hemp: New Materials, Manufactured Products And Therapeutics Jan 2022

Rediscovering Hemp: New Materials, Manufactured Products And Therapeutics

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

Through much of recorded history, the hemp plant was recognized as a sustainable, renewable resource with myriad practical applications. Its fibers are strong, resilient and possess unique chemical properties; its seeds and leaves are nutritious; and parts of the plant have medicinal benefits. However, for more than 50 years, its use in the United States was severely restricted by policymakers who equated all hemp products with just one: marijuana.

That situation has changed over the past decade. Today, most restrictions on hemp have been lifted, and states are legalizing marijuana and its byproducts for medicinal or recreational purposes. That evolution …

Critical Issues In The Book (Eiar Al-Shier), Arwa Majzoub

Al Jinan الجنان

The importance of the critique science lies in that it helps the reader of literature understand its artistic characteristics, and to appreciate its creativity and fine quality. Its function is to judge the quality of literature texts, and provide a comparison between them in the context of the finest artistic rubrics and aesthetic articulation. Accordingly, this research work provides a comprehensive study covering the critique methods covered by the Ibn Tabataba›s book (The Caliber of Poetry). Theater And Spectacle Of The Inside, Dante G. Cannatella Jan 2022

Theater And Spectacle Of The Inside, Dante G. Cannatella

Theses and Dissertations

Dante Cannatella’s work is about when the landscape reclaims the city, when the lines between inside and outside are blurred, and how lives play out against the truth of uncertainty and impermanence. His gestural paintings reflect growing up amidst the destruction and rebuilding of New Orleans. Set against a backdrop of acid yellows, muddy pinks and greys, the figures are caught in the powerful forces of nature, commerce, and mass thought that shape both their inner worlds and outer realities.

Long Time, Jacob V. Reed

Theses and Dissertations

Jake Reed’s work is driven by the idea that architectural ornament can be imbued with meaning not native to its construction or use. Invited Perspective - Nutritional Needs And Implications For Children In Subsistence Marketplaces, Nagendra Rangavajla Jan 2022

Invited Perspective - Nutritional Needs And Implications For Children In Subsistence Marketplaces, Nagendra Rangavajla

Subsistence Marketplaces

Today, while the number of stunted children is decreasing in all geographies, the progress is not consistent. Moreover, there is an increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescent. Globally, about half of all children under five do not receive essential nutrients, often unnoticed until too late. On the other end of the spectrum, the incidence of overweight and obesity in 5-19 year old has increased from 4% in 1975 to 18% in 2016 1. These trends reflect a ‘triple burden of malnutrition’, a burden that impacts the survival, growth, and development of children, and in turn, …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

he implementation of standardized grading production practices within the mass market has been challenging for scholars experimenting with zero-waste apparel design. The purpose of this research was to test the efficacy of the Carrico Zero-waste Banded Grading (CZWBG) technique, which utilizes bands inserted in strategic locations as a method of grading zero-waste patterns across various consumer categories. An additional purpose was to evaluate the ways in which this grading approach affected the aesthetic outcomes of garments across a size run, and to determine whether this method affected the overall design process of the designers involved. Through experimental research design, six …
