Kindred, Marlee Uggen May 2022

Kindred, Marlee Uggen

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

My work is driven by my experiences as a woman, mother, in pregnancy and giving birth. My work investigates the censorship of women’s bodies, and explores the ways in which we can reconnect with and reclaim our power as autonomous beings in society. I employ storytelling to create space to acknowledge my own trauma, make space for people to tell their own story, and focus on healing through normalizing and de-censoring my body. By illustrating things like birth, menstruation, and miscarriage I ask the audience to even consider them. I am mindful of the idea that the things that we …

Shiso: Asian Culture In San Luis Obispo, Natalie Elise Tsoi Rockhold, Mia Lee Candy

Graphic Communication

There is a serious lack of representation on the subject of Asian culture and history in SLO. This magazine aimed to put a spotlight on this topic, with the unique lens of both authors also being mixed-race and how that factored into us finding a cultural community. Through our use of applied design we demonstrated and developed our technical skills in Adobe CC and tactile skills in printing and binding. We created a printed magazine which incorporated cultural elements into its design. We aimed to reflect a strong message in a captivating visual medium, and used personal skills in web …

Fathom In Color: Expansion Of Reproduceable Color In Interference Pattern-Based Printed Motion And Depth Effects, Dovie Jeffcoat May 2022

Fathom In Color: Expansion Of Reproduceable Color In Interference Pattern-Based Printed Motion And Depth Effects, Dovie Jeffcoat

All Theses

Value-added printed embellishments are increasingly sought after as brands compete for consumer attention. Fathom Optics’ method for printing motion and depth effects provides a cost-efficient, reduced waste embellishment option. One of Fathom’s current limitations is producing effects with vibrant color. The current standard practice for producing color Fathom Effects tends to darken and desaturate the final embellishment’s color. This study endeavors to determine how an ink color's components (hue, value and chroma) may determine a Fathom Effect’s contrast or intensity. To achieve this, fifteen color inks were selected to flexographically print the effect patterns. Samples were taken from each color …

Operatic Mysticisms: Mountains, Deserts, Waterscapes, Andrew Demczuk May 2022

Operatic Mysticisms: Mountains, Deserts, Waterscapes, Andrew Demczuk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Operatic Mysticisms: Mountains, Deserts, Waterscapes examines the ways we encounter environments as readers/viewers of operas, literature, film, and sound recordings, and how each medium requires different detail-gathering techniques. Respective to the previously mentioned mediums, Sun & Sea (2017), Mount Analogue (1952), El Mar La Mar (2017), and Energy Field (2010) are analyzed by engaging with environmental media studies and invention. Reflecting the nature of each landscape—summits of mountains, aporias of deserts, and mysteries of waterscapes—an elemental approach is taken in investigating how these spaces may be noticed, internalized, recorded, and traversed by both the artist and viewer. …

My Perception Of Reality Expressed Through The Arts, Amanda Dunker

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis project will focus on the symbolism and artistic interpretation of how I perceive reality. This is a mix between the two digital media formats 2D and 3D. Each animation and segment syncs with the music selected manually or technically. The process of creation for each segment and explaining which software I choose to use for each task. It also dives a little further, noting the artistic decisions and why. The symbolism used within the art …

Future Proof, Melanie Asalde-Smith May 2022

Future Proof, Melanie Asalde-Smith

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

My work can be distilled into two major points of inquiry: perception and technology. I render minimalist interactions between reflective planes, shapes floating in space, and portals into the void. Driven by color, light and space, my work warps its environment through the illusion of illumination and dimension, and invites viewers to lose themselves in the altered space. This work is reflective of my life experience, caught between the real and the unreal.

Technology is both a muse and a tool in creating my analog work. The screen both heightens and distracts from my anxiety. Like many in my generation, …

100 Seconds To Midnight, Melissa Medina May 2022

100 Seconds To Midnight, Melissa Medina

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

My artistic practice focuses on the concept of mortality and investigates the human condition. Through my work, I often personify the concept of death and investigate the several forms that it may take across several cultures. The skull is most often used as a symbol of mortality, and it serves as one of the key elements in my work. I am drawn to the elements portrayed in classical memento mori paintings, and as a result, I have borrowed certain objects commonly used in these works and have paired them alongside more modern elements to create a new narrative. With this …

Deciduous: Using Gamified Skill Trees And Mapping To Define Learning Opportunities For Students, Daniel Allen Burau

Masters Theses

Students can have difficulty visualizing the end goals of units of study and how one learned concept impacts another. They will benefit from seeing their progress toward completion and are motivated by how far they have come in their class. Progress in a course can be measured with the implementation of gamification tools. Gamification involves the integration of game frameworks into non-gaming areas. This research seeks to find how these and other gamification systems help increase student motivation or classroom performance. Elements of gaming are already found in some areas of education. Conscious Shockness, Caleb Lachelt May 2022

Conscious Shockness, Caleb Lachelt

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This collage is meant to tell a story about a few major events in my life in the past few years in an artistic and visually stimulating way. To begin, I used two of my favorite landscape photographs I’ve taken as the background and foreground for the collage, which created a surrealistic yet coherent base. Then, I used clouds from another photograph I’ve taken as well as a freeze frame from one of my skateboard tricks and added them into the top left. This is the first event of my life I wanted to convey, and it describes how I …

Neo Development Of The Workplace Environment In Response To Evolutionary Social Changes, Dafne Odette May 2022

Neo Development Of The Workplace Environment In Response To Evolutionary Social Changes, Dafne Odette

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study is to identify the needs and wants of remote workers to support their health and well-being in response to evolutionary social changes. Many workers were once tethered to live in the city where their job office resided. Additionally, economic forces have long been a deciding factor in where one lives. The COVID-19 virus of 2020 provided an opportunity for many people to work remotely to control the virus (Latham, Higgins, & Judish, 2020). This has allowed people to retain higher salaries while living in rural areas where the cost of living may be lower. In 2021, some businesses …

The Art Of Nutrition, Kylanna Hardaway May 2022

The Art Of Nutrition, Kylanna Hardaway

Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

Many colleges and universities offer students access to on-campus food pantries, yet very few students utilize these services despite reporting high rates of food insecurity. Considering the importance of a healthy diet on the developing minds of young adults, it is pertinent that colleges and universities find innovative ways to reach food insecure students. The purpose of this hybrid creative-research project was to creatively address commonly cited barriers of seeking food assistance (i.e., negative stigma, embarrassment, unknown location, awareness of resource, etc.) using public art. A mural was designed to encourage healthy eating behaviors and provide signage for the Jane …

Woven Words In The Iliad: Gender, Narrative, And Textile Production In The Scholia Of The Venetus A Manuscript, Anne-Catherine Schaaf

College Honors Program

The work of previous scholars has established powerful connections between the process of creating textiles and process of epic oral composition. I build on disparte sources from the fields of archaeology and philology and analyze how the scholia in one epic manuscript of the Iliad, the Venetus A, treat this issue and with a focus on how it interplays with gender, specifically the female characters in the Iliad who produce textiles. I focus on a few major sections of scholia and important scenes of weaving in the Iliad. The key female characters in the novel, both divine and human nearly …

Decades have passed, but female fans who like male idols are still stigmatized, judged, and reduced to exist in society and popular culture. This is also what happened to ARMY, fans of the male idol group BTS. The research uses a qualitative research methodology elaborated through a feminist perspective to discuss how ARMYs are stigmatized because of the perceived inferiority of women and the existence of male domination in society, and also their love for the male group, regarded as the subordinated male group within the circle of hegemonic masculinity. However, the stigma and gender stereotypes attached to them were …

Therefore, this study focuses on sentence-final ending or jeongyeol eomi in Korean interrogative sentences to fill the research gap. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive analysis method. Data is collected from the Korean drama Reply 1997 from the first three episodes. The result shows that a closed-ended interrogative sentence is the type of interrogative sentence most commonly used in the data, while the most …
