Documentary Photography And Curatorial Practice In The United States, 1902-1967, Katie Hegebarth
Documentary Photography And Curatorial Practice In The United States, 1902-1967, Katie Hegebarth
Master of Arts in Art and Design Theses
Documentary photography has been a historically difficult medium to define. Is it art, or journalism or somewhere in between? Over time, the medium has undergone several redefinitions as photography became more accessible to the masses through technological advances, and its inclusion in museum spaces. By examining the history of photography, the elitist motivations of museums in the early twentieth century, and the curatorial practices of landmark photographic shows organized by Alfred Stieglitz of the Photo-Secessionist movement, Roy Stryker of the Farm Security Administration, and Beaumont Newhall, Edward Steichen, and John Szarkowski of the Department of Photography at MoMA, this paper …

Internet Art: An Interactive Timeline Resource, Laurel Vaccaro
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Link to Interactive Timeline Resource (ITR): https://sites.google.com/view/itr-internet-art/home
The purpose of this study was to first collect and summarize the history of internet art from its inception to current day and, second, to create an interactive timeline resource (ITR) designed for K-12 art application. Current approaches to internet art include recommendations that students engage with social media in the K-12 setting, yet gaps in the literature have neglected to address the actual history of internet art as a feature of a student’s K-12 art experiences. Initial research started from a preliminary hypothesis that highlighted the irony of students using the internet …
Winding Down River Road, Gillian Harper
Winding Down River Road, Gillian Harper
LSU Master's Theses
As a mechanism to explore my temporary home in Louisiana, Winding Down River Road is a collection of artworks that integrates natural materials collected from landscapes in southern Louisiana with steel and petroleum-based products. My interest in researching environmental issues, ecology, and industry has shaped my vehicles for observation and how I generate data. Through a variety of methodologies, I am considering how climate change is forcing many of us to re-contextualize how our home can be affected by the very industries we rely on. Personal engagement with residents living in the dystopian atmosphere of southern Louisiana’s industrial corridor and …

Congdon is a fine artist, illustrator, and writer, producing works driven by her experiences with mental health, social justice, being queer, and being a woman. “And while all of those things can feel really dark and hard sometimes, there is a certain amount of joy that I feel, and that’s always what I want to try and express to the world” (Johnson, 2021), she shares. Although her path …

The Message Design Of Raiders Of The Lost Ark On The Atari 2600 & A Fan’S Map, Quick Start, And Strategy Guide, Miguel Ramlatchan, William I. Ramlatchan
Distance Learning Faculty & Staff Books
The message design and human performance technology in video games, especially early video games have always been fascinating to me. From an instructional design perspective, the capabilities of the technology of the classic game consoles required a careful balance of achievable objectives, cognitive task analysis, guided problem solving, and message design. Raiders on the Atari is an excellent example of this balance. It is an epic adventure game, spanning 13+ distinct areas, with an inventory of items, where those hard to find items had to be used by the player to solve problems during their quest (and who would have …
Hexgen Roguevania, Conrad Garcia
Hexgen Roguevania, Conrad Garcia
Theses
This project is inspired by procedural generation methods, Metroid, Castlevania, Rogue, and modern roguelikes. This project is structured around the notion of how procedural game content can be experienced when it is tied directly to player progression. The focus of this project incorporates procedurally generated content so that it can be altered during gameplay. In a sense, this idea brings level content to the player, instead of the player travelling to new zones. The resulting game world starts visually coherent, changing into a world that resembles a patchwork of different biomes crafted by the player’s decisions to progress the game’s …
The Paratexts Of Audience Engagement: Cover Matter That Draws In And Keeps Readers, Athena L. Edwards
The Paratexts Of Audience Engagement: Cover Matter That Draws In And Keeps Readers, Athena L. Edwards
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Within the book publishing industry, purchase statistics often determine a book’s success. This metric neglects crucial factors of reader engagement (i.e., reception and anticipation of current and future work) such as level of interest and appreciation. By blending key concepts from work on assemblage, ecology, reader-response, audience invoked, and media studies, this thesis attempts to (re)invigorate the discourse of book paratexts’ role in inspiring reader engagement. As a manifestation of various voices performing and contextualizing a core text for readers, paratexts are a key component to the discursive uptake of books by readers and their publics. Book covers, specifically, are …
Human Remains In Museums And Institutions: Laws And Policies, Cassidy Steele
Human Remains In Museums And Institutions: Laws And Policies, Cassidy Steele
Master of Arts in Art and Design Theses
Human remains are a unique type of archaeological artifact because of the emotional and cultural ties to living descendants that can still affect the living today. Museums have acquired sets of human remains over the decades by various means like purchases, donations, and grave robbing. The ethical and legal process of displaying and having ownership of human remains has been questioned in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom because both have extensive human remains collections from multiple different cultures. While there are human remains in institutions other than museums that have to abide by the same laws, …
Michael’S Mouth, Peter Olshavsky
Michael’S Mouth, Peter Olshavsky
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
“Michael’s Mouth” examines the virtuoso performance of small mouth sounds (“um,” “ah,” etc.) in MOS’ 2006 video, Alternate Ending 1: The Glimmering Noise. In this performance, “Michael” deftly uses non-words to advance a non-discursive argument about architecture as a form of attention in the post-critical imaginary.

Graphic Scotland: Visuality And Empire, 1810 – 1913, Laura Michelle Golobish
Art & Art History ETDs
Graphic Scotland: Visuality and Empire, 1810–1913 interrogates the aesthetic, technological, and literary conventions used to represent Scotland’s character in nineteenth-century publications. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, publishers, authors, and readers began to correlate the material format of prints, books, illustration, and bookbinding with individual and national character. Periodicals and literature drew the correlations between the aesthetic conventions of picturesque Scottish landscape, physiognomy of Scottish authors, and bookbinding to frame ideas about Scottish character as a didactic model for middle class British and American readers. Thus, Graphic Scotland offers an intertextual reading of three illustrated publications about Scotland–J.R. Osgood’s 1882 …

When Might We Break The Rules? A Statistical Analysis Of Aesthetics In Photographs, Justin Wang, Marie A. Lee, Thomas C.M. Lee
When Might We Break The Rules? A Statistical Analysis Of Aesthetics In Photographs, Justin Wang, Marie A. Lee, Thomas C.M. Lee
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
High-quality photographs often follow certain high-level rules well known to photographers, but some photographs intentionally break these rules. Doing so is usually a matter of artistry and intuition, and the conditions and patterns that allow for rule-breaks are often not well articulated by photographers. This article first applies statistical techniques to help find and evaluate rule-breaking photographs, and then from these photographs discover those patterns that justify their rule-breaking. With this approach, this article discovered some significant patterns that explain why some high-quality photographs successfully break the common photographic rules by positioning the subject in the center or the horizon …

On June 28, 2021, the incoming residents reported for their first day of orientation at HCA Florida Westside Hospital (HFWH). This GME program is a joint venture and requires the same level of commitment from HCA Florida Northwest Hospital (HFNWH). As a new employee, I was immediately impressed with the residents, leadership, and staff. Everyone was relaxed, excited, attentive, and cooperative. I met people from all over the world, from different religions, and of different sexual orientations. The following day the same group of residents attended orientation at HFNWH and the leadership and staff were equally impressive. I went home …
Participatory Design Towards Digital Democracy, Santiago Augusto Silva, Joon Sang Baek
Participatory Design Towards Digital Democracy, Santiago Augusto Silva, Joon Sang Baek
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The potential contributions of participatory design towards current problems of digital democracy platforms are investigated in this research. Literature review, thematic analysis, and inter-rater reliability test were used to determine the major issues in digital democracy platforms and what approaches and tools from participatory design study and practice can be used to address them, considering that democratic dynamics face similar difficulties in both participatory design, and digital democracy. As a result, a participatory design guide for digital democracy is developed, which included seven proposed strategies for dealing with five common issues of public participation platforms. This work contributes to the …

Soundscape Gardens: An Evaluation On Use Of The Northern Ireland Hospice’S Sound Garden Installation, Isaac Gibson, Pedro Rebelo, Craig Jackson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The purpose of this paper is to share the results of an evaluation of the Northern Ireland (NI) Hospice’s Sound Garden installation placed at the Somerton Road site in Belfast. The sound gardens are an immersive installation split into three separate garden spaces, each using a combination of outdoor loudspeakers. The Sound Garden is designed to project a growing collection of soundscapes composed by both students, doctoral candidates, and staff from the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen’s University Belfast. This evaluation, which took place in late 2019 as part of a Master of Research, uses both pseudonymised questionnaires …
Preparing For The Pluriverse: Embracing Critical Self-Reflection In Service Design Practice, Shivani Prakash
Preparing For The Pluriverse: Embracing Critical Self-Reflection In Service Design Practice, Shivani Prakash
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper explores how service designers in the public sector can embrace a lens of cultural plurality in their daily design practice. When designing for public services, a gap between the cultural assumptions of the designer and diverse residents is going to emerge. If this gap is not addressed, service design risks enacting harmful oppressive structures. This study develops a process model based on a research through design approach. It describes how a generative feedback loop of critical self-reflection negotiated within design practice could support designers to begin embracing cultural plurality along with concrete examples. The process model addresses the …
The Unfolding Of Textileness In Animated Textiles: An Exploration Of Woven Textile-Forms, Alice Buso, Holly Mcquillan, Kaspar Jansen, Elvin Karana
The Unfolding Of Textileness In Animated Textiles: An Exploration Of Woven Textile-Forms, Alice Buso, Holly Mcquillan, Kaspar Jansen, Elvin Karana
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Designers of textile-based interactive systems tend to treat woven fabrics as static materials and lack deeper understandings of how the textile can be designed for responsive behaviours in artefacts. As a result, in most studies across design and HCI, textiles are employed as substrates for computational, biological, or smart materials. This narrow view limits the potential of textiles that can be programmed to express responsive behaviour through their inherent material qualities. Our paper aims at bridging this gap in the design of animated textile artefacts. We present woven textile-forms where textile structures are programmed to tune the behaviour of low-melt …
Material Metaphors: An Approach To Collaborative Knowledge Production In Transdisciplinary Sustainability Research, Daniela Peukert
Material Metaphors: An Approach To Collaborative Knowledge Production In Transdisciplinary Sustainability Research, Daniela Peukert
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The integration of different forms of knowing and bodies of knowledge, as well as collaborative forms of knowledge production, seems particularly significant for the core of scientific work and in inter- and transdisciplinary processes in sustainability research. Nevertheless, collaborative knowledge production in heterogeneous teams brings up specific challenges. This is where existing methods for group negotiation processes, strongly based on language and text, reach their limits. To fill this gap, design-based methods can be used. They expand the mode of language and text to include the visual-haptic dimension, which allows access to other levels of thinking as it appeals to …
What Legal Design Could Be: Towards An Expanded Practice Of Inquiry, Critique, And Action, Dan Jackson, Jules Rochielle Sievert, Miso Kim, Sankalp Bhatnagar
What Legal Design Could Be: Towards An Expanded Practice Of Inquiry, Critique, And Action, Dan Jackson, Jules Rochielle Sievert, Miso Kim, Sankalp Bhatnagar
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Our theme track call for papers invited contributions that explore the role of designers in advancing legal design as an expanded practice of inquiry, critique, and action. Our core motivation for this theme track is our vision for a baseline world where everyone possesses agency to use the law and is equipped to both assert legal rights and question or change the role that law has in and on our lives. We are here deliberately challenging the emerging norms of legal design practice and theory because we feel achieving universal legal agency will entail working with a different attitude toward …
Design As Posture: Developing Enlightened Subjectivity With The Philosophy Of Yoga, Estelle Berger
Design As Posture: Developing Enlightened Subjectivity With The Philosophy Of Yoga, Estelle Berger
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This research aims at supporting designers in developing a both embodied and reflective posture in practice – referred to as “enlightened subjectivity”. A dialogue is set up between the Samkhya, an early Buddhist philosophy at the basis of Yoga, and the design discipline. Grounded in practical experience, this inspirational framework allows approaching the sense-making process occurring in practice, through perception, understanding, action, and relation. This is sustained by professional posture, the specific way in which one invests their activity, giving it substance, meaning and justification. Implications for design education relate to increasing awareness among designers on their own posture, and …

Visualizing Stories Of Sexual Harassment In The Academy: Community Empowerment Through Qualitative Data, Tommaso Elli, Adam Bradley, Uta Hinrichs, Christopher Collins
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper presents the design report of an experimental data visualization art-work that deals with sexual harassment in academic environments. The visualiza-tion employs a qualitative dataset of stories of abuse and aims at nurturing emo-tional involvement by creating connections with the people behind the data. In the paper, we outline our theoretical background, considering previous research on anthropomorphic and artistic visualizations. Successively, we disclose our de-sign approach and discuss the visualizations’ capability to nurture reflection, stimulate conversations, and empower the community of people fighting against sexual harassment in academia and beyond.

Designing Transformative Futures, Ann Light, Colin M. Gray, Kristina Lindström, Laura Forlano, Dan Lockton, Chris Speed
DRS Biennial Conference Series
What makes the design of futures sufficiently transformative? Worldwide, people are aware of the need to change and keep changing to address eco-social challenges and their fall-out in an age of crises and transitions in climate, biodiversity, and health. Calls for climate justice and the development of eco-social sensibilities speak to the need for dynamic and provisional engagements. Such concerns raise age-old issues of inequality and colonialist destruction. Our designs carry the imprint of this current politics, wittingly or unwittingly, into worlds to come. This conversa- tion asked how might we respond fluidly to coming uncertainties, questioning our own practices …
