Material Analysis And Conservation Treatment Of Louise Nevelson’S Sculpture Dawn’S Image, Night, Kaela Nurmi
Material Analysis And Conservation Treatment Of Louise Nevelson’S Sculpture Dawn’S Image, Night, Kaela Nurmi
Art Conservation Master's Projects
Louise Nevelson’s large-scale, matte black assemblage sculpture Dawn’s Image, Night, 1969, is owned by and currently on display at SUNY Buffalo State College. The paint layers exhibited significant amounts of dust, some damages, vandalism, and unsightly fingerprints. Extensive scientific analysis and archival research were utilized to design an appropriate treatment and long-term preservation plan. Methods of analysis include: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, microchemical testing, and xray fluorescence spectroscopy. The project also addresses the ethical considerations surrounding the prior removal of original components for safety considerations, repainting as a possible treatment, and the overall obstacles of treating a …

Looking For Beauty: Humboldt’S Plein Air Community Shows Why Art Matters, Cm Phillips
Trade & Scholarly Monographs
This historic publication serves as Humboldt County's first anthology of painters. It showcases a snapshot in time of thirty-seven members of Humboldt's Plein Air community—from beginners to world-renown professionals—in an avant-garde design that blends layers of paintings with commentaries about them, photographs of the artists, and responses to the prompt, "Does art matter in this crossroads of our time?"
Now more than ever, it is an important question to ask. In this book, you'll find answers from thirty-seven different artists, with each response as unique as Humboldt's thriving Plein Air community. In he words of Plein Air painter Steven Taylor, …
Post-Digital Curation: The Contemporary Flaneur, Technology And The Artist Book, Jared O’Sullivan
Post-Digital Curation: The Contemporary Flaneur, Technology And The Artist Book, Jared O’Sullivan
Postgraduate
This project identifies and examines the emergent themes in the original photographic work of Australian photographer Jared O’Sullivan from 2009 – 2019 and reflects on the curation and production of a retrospective artist book that celebrates a decade of professional practice.
The exegesis explores how the creation of an artist book retrospective can illuminate underlying themes in past works and how curation as method facilitates the discovery and communication of these new insights into practice. Referencing the works of Charles Baudelaire, Walter Benjamin and Susan Sontag, the literature review explores the effects of technology in relation to photographic theory and …

Rupturismes: Art Sonor A Mallorca, Un Poc De Context, Antoni Pizà
Rupturismes: Art Sonor A Mallorca, Un Poc De Context, Antoni Pizà
Publications and Research
Analog Matters: Labels, Cassettes, And Alternative Economies In Argentina’S Independent Music Scenes, Maria Agustina Checa
Analog Matters: Labels, Cassettes, And Alternative Economies In Argentina’S Independent Music Scenes, Maria Agustina Checa
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a multi-sited ethnographic study of current cassette production and circulation in Argentina. It analyzes the work of independent labels that record music available online onto cassette tapes, incorporating a variety of music styles. I examine practices of production, circulation, and exchange, and the alternative economies performed around cassettes, with particular attention to the materialities constituting these processes. Through cassettes, I conceptualize and trace "relational value," a notion to understand objects with different kinds of social agencies valued for their abilities to generate connections. Relational value is a theoretical construct that emerges from the ground-up approach to studying …

The research activities conducted for this publication were funded by the Irish Research Council.

This study aims to determine the factors causing the threat of extinction and the strategy of maintaining the sinrili tradition in the Makassar community. This study is based on library research with a descriptive approach. The results of this research reveal that the factors that cause the threat of extinction of the sinrili tradition in the Makassar community are:(1) Work as a singer is not considered as a main profession in Makassar, and is only seen as a side job. (2) The development of modern music which is more attractive to the younger generation poses a challenge to this tradition. …

Cooking activities in the traditional kitchen or in the domestic area—which are supposed to be the domain of women—are interpreted as an obligation as well as a form of a woman’s service to her family, spouse, children, and even other people who are close to her life. In other words, cooking in the domestic area is an undefined job. Regardless of the fact, when cooking shifted to the public space, it turned into a professional job, a work area which was later known as the professional kitchen. People who work in a professional kitchen are given the title professional chef. …

Membaca Persoalan Hijab Dan Otonomi Perempuan Melalui Epistemology Ignorance, Saniyah Pertiwi, Naupal Asnawi
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Apart from its religious values, the hijab has currently developed into a lifestyle. The issue concerning the hijab in Indonesia has evolved over time with a fascinating complexity that is worth to be examined. The Indonesian people who have the habit of questioning the decision to wear or not to wear the hijab illustrates that the choice of Indonesian women is not considered as a personal matter. This research will discuss how the phenomenon of “questioning the decision to wear or not wear the hijab” is based on the epistemology of ignorance, which investigates and explains how ignorance is formed …

Negotiation Discourse of Femininity Through Disney Princesses’ Movies. Femininity tends to be explained as a condition ‘to be a woman’, making it an ideology that gives limitations to women. Mills uses discourse theory to explain femininity, stating femininity is a process that is constructed and negotiated in every interaction. Disney Princesses show changes through times and each animation film, showing a negotiation of what defines femininity. The data collection was carried out by qualitative method narrative study, with Performativity of Gender by Judith Butler and Negotiation Discourse of Femininity theory by Sara Mills. Sawer: Melampaui Ruang Dan Meluaskan Jangkauan Interaksi Pada Pertunjukan Dangdut, Michael H.B Raditya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This article deals with the issues of sawer that have appeared over time, both in live and online performances. This topic is interesting because sawer is intertwined in the interaction and participation of two active subjects, namely the singer and her audience. In live performances, the exchange between singers and their audiences happens in the same space and time. On the other hand, accommodating sawer in online dangdut performances is a challenge. However, in 2020 there was a lot of interaction and participation—and even sawer—in online shows. I believe this is not the first glimpse of this phenomenon because online …
