An Exploration Of The Black Female Cosplay Experience, Geneisa B. Ragin, Geneisa Ragin Nov 2022

An Exploration Of The Black Female Cosplay Experience, Geneisa B. Ragin, Geneisa Ragin

Honors College Theses

Cosplay is the practice of dressing up as a fictional character whether it's from a television show, video games, or even a book series. Many people participate in cosplay to show their dedication or admiration for their favorite character and sometimes cosplay a character that helps reflect their own character or personality. This thesis will mainly focus on the experience of being a Black female cosplayer in pop culture, social media, conventions, and other places where people can share and communicate. In this thesis’s research, participants' answers about their experiences were centered around their inspiration to start cosplaying, their ways …

Gamification In Education: A Study Of Design-Based Learning In Operationalizing A Game Studio For Serious Games, James Hutson, Ben Fulcher, Joe Weber Nov 2022

Gamification In Education: A Study Of Design-Based Learning In Operationalizing A Game Studio For Serious Games, James Hutson, Ben Fulcher, Joe Weber

Faculty Scholarship

The gamification of learning has proven educational benefits, especially in secondary education. Studies confirm the successful engagement of students with improved time on task, motivation and learning outcomes. At the same time, there remains little research on games and learning at the postsecondary level of education where traditional pedagogies remain the norm. Studies that have been conducted remain almost exclusively restricted to science programs, including medicine and engineering. Moreover, postsecondary subject-matter experts who have created their own gamified experiences often are forced to do so on an ad hoc basis either on their own, teaching themselves game engines, or with …

The Market For Classic French Modern Art Prior To 1940, Robert Jensen Nov 2022

The Market For Classic French Modern Art Prior To 1940, Robert Jensen

Art and Visual Studies Presentations

Using a quantitative methodology based on auction and sales prices, the paper describes the high-end market for paintings between 1895 and 1839 (paintings selling for $10,000 or more), especially in reference to what the author describes as "classic French modern art." The paper compares prices between Old Master art, classic French modern art, and contemporary art during this period, and asks why classic French modern art sold for prices nearly as high as Old Master art did during this period, especially when compared to contemporary painting.

We Are All Connected, Behnoush Tavasolinia Nov 2022

We Are All Connected, Behnoush Tavasolinia

LSU Master's Theses

Upon personal reflection, I have discovered that economic, cultural, and social issues have become very important in my life. As an Iranian graphic designer, I used current events and responded to Iranian stories to reflect that people’s problems anywhere in the world affect other people’s lives worldwide. My thesis investigation aims to reveal the global connection with commodities by focusing on Iran’s economic inflation to create a conceptual and visual representation of impacted consumables. Persian rugs and tile designs are the centers of the culture and symbols of the Iranian people. I used graphic design to illustrate tiles utilizing economic …

Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements Nov 2022

Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements

Postgraduate

The representation of disability in creative media is problematic. There have been several tests proposed that analyse disability representation within a media text, in an attempt to determine if a media text represents disability appropriately. In this thesis, I discuss several existing tests of disability representation within media texts, identifying problems in each. I propose a new test for disability representation to address these problems. I then apply the test described in this thesis to media texts within the spheres of film, television, fictional literature, comics and games. Using the qualitative method of autoethnography combined with discourse analysis, I will …

Unity, Nicholas D'Angelo

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Community health is vital to increase the lifespan and quality of life of the people on our planet. We must unite to fight disease through education and implementing quality healthcare. This piece was created prior to the pandemic, but its message is so incredibly pertinent in these troubling times. We must encourage patients and one another to take precautions such as wearing masks and getting vaccines in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19.

IdeaFest: Interdisciplinary Journal of Creative Works and Research from Cal Poly Humboldt

There are two major bodies of work I generate: one is based on three-dimensional clothing construction, and the other is allegorical figurative work. Both bodies of work display their own poetry. Working with materials such as: Forton MG resin, fibers, bronze, found objects, etc., I feel that possessing knowledge in as many mediums as possible is necessary so that one can achieve a “vision” that is a basis for communication. It is my desire to start a dialogue about women’s issues, cultural change, and contemporary miasma. S.O.S. addresses a variety of related issues: bearing witness to our current times, social …

Iterating The Design Process Using Ai Diffusion Models, Josh Vermillion Oct 2022

Iterating The Design Process Using Ai Diffusion Models, Josh Vermillion

Creative Collaborations

These studies span research and creative work to interrogate the generative capacity of text-to-image diffusion models that leverage artificial intelligence to produce architectural concepts, ideas, and imagery. These systems can generate an enormous amount of imagery in a very short amount of time based entirely from the written word, and we are still just beginning to understand how these digital tools might augment and/or disrupt, both, the design process, and design pedagogy within the discipline of architecture.

These AI models occupy a quickly evolving technology space with tremendous implications for how we design, as well as how we visualize—and verbalize—our …
