Recent years have shown a remarkable advancement in making neural technologies accessible, transcending the confines of clinical settings, with companies introducing neural hardware once limited to specialized environments. Concurrently, scientific research has made significant strides in demonstrating the effectiveness of neurofeedback as a closed-loop system, enabling individuals to regulate neural signals consciously. While studies focus on individual-based learning, emerging evidence suggests that NF can facilitate neural synchronicity among multiple individuals. To optimize NF and achieve favorable neuro-behavioral outcomes, recent investigations propose integration of immersive interfaces that provide a holistic and meaningful learning experience. However, a disconnect between scientists and designers …
Tools For A Warming Planet, Beth Ferguson, Sara Dean
Tools For A Warming Planet, Beth Ferguson, Sara Dean
IASDR Conference Series
We live on a planet in flux--warming waters and land, chaotic weather, and unknown futures. Our adaptability and ingenuity are crucial to our collective survival, and our planet’s ability to thrive. In response to this condition, innovative new tools for understanding, engaging, and responding to our current and future environment are needed. Tools for a Warming Planet is a crowd-sourced collection of 50 tools that engage in the urgency of climate change. This community archive and living lab was created by using print and digital submission tools shared by a variety of art, design, and cultural institutions. The collection represents …
Ux Design Approach To Guide Parametric Product Customization: A Case For Eyeglass Frame Design, Yibo Jiao, Heekyoung Jung, Alejandro Lozano Robledo, Brigid O’Kane
Ux Design Approach To Guide Parametric Product Customization: A Case For Eyeglass Frame Design, Yibo Jiao, Heekyoung Jung, Alejandro Lozano Robledo, Brigid O’Kane
IASDR Conference Series
We propose a parametric customization process that provides step-by-step instructions for end-users to personalize product shapes by adjusting pre-set parametric values. This pictorial presents the process of structuring the parametric model of eyeglass frames in Rhino Grasshopper as a case study to demonstrate the proposed process through iterative design explorations. A user experience (UX) design approach was applied to construct user interaction workflows, screen mock-ups, and digital interfaces for a web-based service that guides the parametric design process. By simulating the user experience with high-fidelity screen mock-ups, we engaged multiple stakeholders, including product designer, service and UX designer, marketing professional, …
Pedagogy Of Experimental Design: Scientific Research Methods In Architectural Education, Assia Crawford
Pedagogy Of Experimental Design: Scientific Research Methods In Architectural Education, Assia Crawford
IASDR Conference Series
Bio-design is a growing field in architecture that focuses on integrating biological processes and systems into the design of buildings and urban environments. This approach draws inspiration from nature and seeks to create sustainable and regenerative structures that can adapt to changing environmental conditions. Architecture students are increasingly becoming involved in the design and execution of bio-design experiments, leveraging their interdisciplinary knowledge and design skills to create innovative solutions that integrate biology and design principles. This allows students to explore new avenues of research and to develop a deeper understanding of the intersection between design and the natural world. This …
Exploiting Co-Design, Game Thinking And Citizen Science In A Workshop-Like Experience For Stimulating Reflections With Teens, Chiara Ceccarini, Tommaso Zambon, Catia Prandi
Exploiting Co-Design, Game Thinking And Citizen Science In A Workshop-Like Experience For Stimulating Reflections With Teens, Chiara Ceccarini, Tommaso Zambon, Catia Prandi
IASDR Conference Series
Teenagers are constantly overwhelmed with information and activities, both considering school activities and their free time. How can we actively engage them in educational experiences to stimulate discussions and reflections about social issues? To answer this question, we conceived a workshop-like experience where we put into practice three well know methods and concepts, such as co-design, citizen science, and game thinking. The final output of the activity is a low-fidelity prototype of a mobile application, co-designed by a group of students. By taking advantage of open-ended making to engage participants in the ideation of a gamified/game-based citizen science application, we …
Domestic Infrastructure Of Food: Thoughts On Community Engagement Through Food, Furniture, And Architectural Exhibition, Leyuan Li
IASDR Conference Series
Over the past decades, the attention towards fresh food ingredients has promoted the emergence of growing vegetables in domestic spaces and sharing homemade ingredients with neighbors. The introduction of producing and exchanging food in domestic territories not only creates new forms of recreation, but also foregrounds inhabitants' anxieties concerning food security and community engagement, especially amidst global unrest during the pandemic. Within this imperative context, the pictorial essay intends to introduce food as a collective medium and a social act. By showing a series of representations and photographs of an installation project, the essay speculates on the performative and spatial …
Picturing Interactivity: Design Exploration Of A Highly Interactive Picturebook, Nicholas Vanderschantz, Claire Timpany, Kristy Wright
Picturing Interactivity: Design Exploration Of A Highly Interactive Picturebook, Nicholas Vanderschantz, Claire Timpany, Kristy Wright
IASDR Conference Series
Picturebooks and interactivity are two critical features of early learning in the home and during education. Picturebooks afford opportunities for shared reading and learning through active participation by each reader. Picturebook research has explored a range of concepts, yet very little research to date synergises these investigations using a lens that will help to design transformative interactive books that positively impact shared reading. This research offers the design rationale, and process followed to develop a highly interactive printed picturebook. The design considerations employed are presented in our paper and serve as inspiration for designers developing books that may support multiple …

Proceedings Of Iasdr 2023: Life-Changing Design, Daniela De Sainz Molestina, Laura Galluzzo, Francesca Rizzo, Davide Spallazzo
DRS Conference Volumes
This volume is the proceedings of the 10th biennial congress of IASDR, the International Association for Societies of Design Research, hosted by the Politecnico di Milano, 9–13 October 2023. With its overarching theme of “Life-Changing Design” and its diverse thematic tracks, IASDR2023 presented an exceptional opportunity for researchers, scholars, and practitioners to engage with the dynamic landscape of design research. The conference served as a platform for robust discussions, knowledge sharing, and the exploration of innovative solutions to society’s complex challenges. By examining these thematic tracks and their intersection with the central theme, “Life-Changing Design,” the conference contributed to the …
