What's Growing On? Raising Awareness Of Florida’S Declining Citrus Industry And Its Economic Impact, Emily Gail Snyder
What's Growing On? Raising Awareness Of Florida’S Declining Citrus Industry And Its Economic Impact, Emily Gail Snyder
Masters Theses
The adult population of Central Florida fails to understand the consequences of the decline of the citrus industry in the state of Florida resulting in lost jobs and wages, lost tax revenue, and a loss of acreage due to the increase in housing and infrastructure from the influx of people moving to Florida. The decline of the citrus industry in Florida is a large problem that not many people recognize as an issue. With nearly 6.9 billion dollars earned for the state of Florida along with the support of approximately 33,000 jobs, the citrus industry is a major contributor to …
Narrative World Building: Creative Applications For Gamification In Study Abroad, Ashley Lear
Narrative World Building: Creative Applications For Gamification In Study Abroad, Ashley Lear
Publications
This study examined a cohort of 12 study abroad participants taking a course on video game topography and narrative in Salamanca, Spain, to determine how inhabiting and co-creating narrative worlds as part of the coursework might impact the experiences of the students inside and outside of the classroom as they engaged in mandated and optional cultural engagement activities, such as museum tours and excursions to historical sites. Students completed two gameful learning activities: 1) they co-created their own narrative game world in a group game proposal assignment drawing upon research from storytelling through game environments, and 2) they created independent …
What Does One Billion Dollars Look Like?: Visualizing Extreme Wealth, William Mahoney Luckman
What Does One Billion Dollars Look Like?: Visualizing Extreme Wealth, William Mahoney Luckman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The word “billion” is a mathematical abstraction related to “big,” but it is difficult to understand the vast difference in value between one million and one billion; even harder to understand the vast difference in purchasing power between one billion dollars, and the average U.S. yearly income. Perhaps most difficult to conceive of is what that purchasing power and huge mass of capital translates to in terms of power. This project blends design, text, facts, and figures into an interactive narrative website that helps the user better understand their position in relation to extreme wealth: https://whatdoesonebilliondollarslooklike.website/
The site incorporates …
Aesthetic Approaches To Symmetric Functions, John M. Campbell
Aesthetic Approaches To Symmetric Functions, John M. Campbell
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Symmetry is often regarded as an integral aspect about aesthetics. This motivates the pursuit of interdisciplinary studies based on the use of subjects in mathematics concerned with symmetry in conjunction with aesthetics. What is referred to as a symmetric function in the field of algebraic combinatorics is an abstraction based on polynomials that exhibit a symmetric property, and this leads us to pursue an algebraic combinatorics-inspired exploration based on aesthetics. In particular, we use different bases and transitions between them to create aesthetically pleasing visualizations of symmetric functions. We see that these visualizations in turn raise new and interesting questions.
Afterlight: Game Design And The Power Of Narrative, Elio Hollenbeck
Afterlight: Game Design And The Power Of Narrative, Elio Hollenbeck
Undergraduate Research Symposium
In the last few decades we as a society have watched the evolution of games as a storytelling medium. From Candyland to The Last of Us, all games use some form of narrative to bring players into the world of the game. Over the course of the last six months, I’ve been developing a tabletop card game with the working title of Afterlight. In this presentation, I will be explaining my process as I’ve worked on designing and refining this game. I will also talk about why I feel game design can be an effective way to engage people with …

One of the most influential K-pop groups in the world is Bangtan Sonyeondan, abbreviated as BTS. Comparison Of The Religious Meaning Of Water Festivals In Thailand And Laos, Tang Lin, Darmoko Darmoko
International Review of Humanities Studies
Both Thailand and Laos are predominantly Buddhist countries, following Theravada Buddhism. Influenced by Indian Buddhism, both countries celebrate several similar festivals, such as Songkran, Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, and Vixakha Souvana. Among all these celebrations, Songkran is considered the most lively, and this is the focus of this article. The article compares and analyzes the culture of Songkran in Laos and Thailand, including the festival's themes, cultural significance, and activities, to highlight the similarities and differences between the two. The cultural significance found in the Water Festival primarily stems from Indian cultural influences, while the differences in meaning are attributed …
