In The Light, Z Sarkissian
In The Light, Z Sarkissian
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
In The Light, a first-person adventure mystery video game, seeks to explore the process of grief and its effect on memory through experimental level design and game mechanics. Through atmospheric, experiential storytelling and a soundscape derived from my own home videos, I aim to guide the player through my own personal experience of learning to grieve the truth behind traumatic memories with the goal of supporting those who have been through similar struggles in life. Additionally, I aim to experiment with the idea of games as a space for memorialization; my project attempts to utilize the video game artifact as …

NEBO: A Literary Journal
Nebo, Volume 1, Issue 1 (Spring 1983), marks the beginning of a new era for Arkansas Tech University’s literary journal, as it transitions from its former identity as The Five Cent Cigar to Nebo. Published biannually by the English Department, Nebo takes its name from both the Chaldean god of writing and the iconic Arkansas landmark, Mount Nebo, symbolizing the journal’s dedication to creative expression and literary excellence.
This inaugural issue showcases poetry and fiction from both emerging and established writers, featuring works by Howard Nemerov, Dana Gioia, and Lily Peter, among others. With this transition, Nebo affirms …

Beyond Rules And Tools: Imagining A Design Approach To Metadata Management Training, Rebecca B. French
Beyond Rules And Tools: Imagining A Design Approach To Metadata Management Training, Rebecca B. French
Libraries
Professional development offerings for cataloging and metadata practitioners primarily focus on "rules and tools" - the standards, guidelines, and software applications commonly used in the field. These areas of knowledge are important and foundational, but professionals also need competence in synthesizing this information to solve metadata problems. In this presentation, I will explore design epistemology as a way of understanding metadata management. I will apply design concepts and methods to reimagine metadata training and provide suggestions for on-the-job training approaches that support the development of these harder-to-teach skills.
Personal Design, Political Design, Dark Design, Catherine Harper
Personal Design, Political Design, Dark Design, Catherine Harper
Arts and Design
The western-feminist slogan ‘the personal is political’ (Hanisch, 1970) emerged in the late 1960s, connecting women’s varied experiences of, for example, reproductive autonomy, pay inequality, childcare/household labour, and domestic violence, with social and political issues. These include social justice, civil rights, abortion access, gay and women’s liberation, the dismantling of systemic racism and structural oppression.
As an Irish, feminist, auto-ethnographic artist-designer-writer-academic, my lived experience of three decades of political violence and social repression in Northern Ireland (1967-98) and the different but no less complex cultures of the UK (1996-2022) and Egypt (1922-), is informed by deliberatively, intentionally designed activism for …

The Maine Career Exploration (MCE) Program was a two-year, $25 million pilot initiative launched in 2022 by Governor Janet Mills as part of the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan. The program aimed to connect young people aged 16 to 24 with Maine’s economy through paid, age-appropriate career experiences that matched their interests, while also expanding career exploration opportunities in schools and communities and building long-term infrastructure to sustain these efforts. Managed by the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, MCE distributed funding across three main streams: the Maine Children’s Cabinet Career Exploration Pilot Project, the Maine Department of Education’s …
Fragility And Strength In Times Of War: A Series Of Embroidered Watercolors, Alisha B. Whitman
Fragility And Strength In Times Of War: A Series Of Embroidered Watercolors, Alisha B. Whitman
Theses
This final project report follows the production of a series of embroidered watercolors that explore how war disrupts and can destroy the values which people manage to somehow both hold dear and take for granted. These values, such as peace and freedom, are fragile, and yet they can provide great strength in dark times. This dichotomy is explored through this body of work using the materials of painted paper and thread as symbols of both fragility and strength. Choosing to work with materials and methods historically seen as feminine work add additional meaning to that symbolism. Additionally, Jewish iconography and …
From Digital To Print: Investigating Ink And Paper Combinations In Photographic Printing, Jacquelyn Lily Bostock
From Digital To Print: Investigating Ink And Paper Combinations In Photographic Printing, Jacquelyn Lily Bostock
Graphic Communication
The significance of this project lies in its potential to deepen the understanding of how paper choice influences color reproduction in printed photographic works. As digital photography continues to advance, the demand for high-quality physical prints remains strong, requiring photographers and designers to carefully consider how materials impact the final image. This research provides valuable insights into how different paper substrates—specifically silk text stock and satin text stock—affect color accuracy, vibrancy, and tonal subtleties when printed using a standardized color management workflow.
By highlighting the interaction between printer limitations and paper characteristics, this project helps photographers and print professionals make …

Gather: Combating Food Insecurity With Accessible Solutions, Claudia Maldonado
Graphic Communication
t Throughout my college experience, I have met countless students struggling to maintain a healthy lifestyle, in large part because they do not have the resources to cook healthy meals, are on tight budgets, lack transportation, and simply do not have the time. Through my senior project, I aim to address the issue of food insecurity for college students by completely redesigning and prototyping a concept developed collaboratively with my team members, Callie Russo and Reilly Yuen, during the UX Fest SLO competition (Maldonado, Russo, & Yuen, 2024). This intuitive app, Gather, would link food-insecure college students' CalFresh profiles to …
Moonlight Matcha Process Book, Adrienne Liang
Moonlight Matcha Process Book, Adrienne Liang
Graphic Communication
As matcha continues to rise in popularity across the United States, there are significant gaps in consumer awareness regarding its health benefits and cultural significance. Moonlight Matcha, a fictitious brand developed for my senior project, seeks to bridge those gaps by educating consumers about the wellness benefits of matcha while featuring a modern, appealing design that resonates with a broad audience. This project has been especially meaningful because it allowed me to explore the full process of building a brand from the ground up – from brand strategy and storytelling to packaging development and user experience (UX) design. It brings …

Under The Veil: Women's Head Coverings In Tudor England, Savannah Toth
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This thesis seeks to discover and analyze the agency and meaning of the role of women’s head coverings and veils within the context of Tudor Christianity, society, and the fashion world of English culture. By observing the usage of the veil through various lenses, this thesis examines the nuance of the veil as an object and actor in Tudor society that enables yet prohibits personal choice for women. This research uses various sources such as Tudor paintings and portraits, surviving pieces of garments, and written accounts to paint a picture of the impact and significance the veil had in every …

There are challenges in functionality, navigation and aesthetics with the current Cal Poly University Housing portal. There exists a need for a redesign of the portal to be more intuitive and user friendly for students. By conducting research with students and University Housing staff to gain a full understanding of the current issues present, an improved interface that reflects the needs of Cal Poly students can be produced. The goal of this self-guided senior project is to provide a streamlined experience that allows students to easily complete their main task with minimal effort. This paper outlines the redesign process of …

ReLeaf is an innovative project that explores the dynamic intersection of sustainability and functionality in cannabis packaging. This project explores the urgent need for environmentally responsible solutions in an industry often reliant on single-use plastic. This project uses an innovative lens to research current eco-friendly packaging using kraft paperboard tubes, ultraviolet glass jars, and post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics. This project aims to create a packaging solution that meets industry safety standards while appealing to eco-conscious consumers by prioritizing recyclability, biodegradability, aesthetic design, and compliance with safety regulations. The branding strategy, embodied in the name “ReLeaf,” emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of …
