Digitizing The Aura: A Systems Update For The Contemporary Art World, Emilie Trice
Digitizing The Aura: A Systems Update For The Contemporary Art World, Emilie Trice
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the digital tide of the last several decades, the material, metaphysical and economic properties of art have evolved in response to the ever-accelerating growth of cybernetics. The contemporary art ecosystem (CAE) has long been considered “the last unregulated financial market”; then cryptocurrency was invented. Now, blockchain technology has entered the cultural zeitgeist and could radically innovate numerous industries, including the art market. The CAE itself is a network, a system that operates within fundamental parameters and, in that sense, it shares much in common with the philosophies underlying computation, such as systems theory, complexity theory and emergent consensus mechanisms. …

Battleground; Invasive Procedure; Inadequate Protection Poster Series, Anne Giangiulio
Battleground; Invasive Procedure; Inadequate Protection Poster Series, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
These three posters were designed to bring attention to the injustices women face at the hands of men around the world every day—in terms of unequal, gender-biased laws, and inadequate protection under the law that compromises women's safety. My process is to look to everyday objects and see the irony and relationships in them and how they may be linked to ideas in a way that draws the audience's attention. Viewers have been very caught off guard by these posters. This poster series earned a Silver Award in Graphis Competitions Poster Annual 2022
Chalk The Block 2020 Poster, Anne Giangiulio
Chalk The Block 2020 Poster, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I designed this poster for the annual Chalk the Block event which will hopefully take place in October of 2020, as it has the past 10 years, in downtown El Paso. For the art vendors component of the event, I organize a group of students from my 'Graphic Design 4: Typography' class at The University of Texas at El Paso. Their posters are judged and selected to be on sale in a downtown outdoor booth for the weekend event. All proceeds from the sale of the posters go directly to the student designers.
El Paso Women's History Coloring Book Cover, Anne Giangiulio
El Paso Women's History Coloring Book Cover, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I was asked by the women of the C.L. Sonnichsen Special Collections Department of The University of Texas at El Paso Library to design this cover for El Paso Women's History Coloring Book Cover, Volume 2, A Women's Sufrage Centennial Project. The coloring book will soon be distributed to schools and libraries around the city of El Paso. During this process, I learned that the colors of the U.S. women’s suffrage movement were white, purple, and gold!
The Tedium Is The Message, Anne Giangiulio
The Tedium Is The Message, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I designed this cross stitch with French knots in response to the #StayHome mandate at the start of the Corona Virus pandemic hitting my city around the middle of March, 2020. Using graph paper and Adobe Illustrator, I designed the layout that I later implemented on 14-count Aida cloth. The point of using an age-old craft technique for this poster is due to how much time counted cross stitch takes, something that staying home with nowhere to go makes possible. Its title is a spoof of communication thinker Marshall McCluhan's famous phrase, "the medium is the message" introduced in his …

I was contracted by the local strategic planning firm Helix Solutions to design a Tribal Injury Atlas for New Mexico and Southwest Colorado. The report provides an overview of injury among American Indian and Alaska Native people living in New Mexico and Southwestern Colorado. Topics covered includedeaths and hospitalizations due to injury. Furthermore,it looks at both the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey and theNew Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey to describerisk behaviors within the American Indian/Alaska Native(AI/AN) youth populations of the two states. The reportalso draws upon aggregated New Mexico Behavioral RiskFactor Surveillance System data to present injury-relatedrisk behaviors in …
Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2019 Year-End Report, Anne Giangiulio
Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2019 Year-End Report, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
This project earned first place, Annual Reports category, in the 2020 Print Awards, presented by Adobe. https://www.printmag.com/post/the-best-graphic-design-of-the-year-announcing-the-winners-of-the-print-awards I designed this Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2019 Year-End Report for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, a Puebloan Native American tribal entity located in the Ysleta section of El Paso, Texas. With a focus on the traditional foods of the tribe, the report features photos and text that document the creation of time-honored recipes created by various tribal members and the stories that accompany them. To achieve this, we worked with a Tiguan photographer whom I art directed during the cooking or baking …

The Oceans Above Us: An Augmented Reality Experience, Chris Nalani Dimeo
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Augmented reality holds the potential to be the new fabric of our everyday lives.
Also known as AR, augmented reality is any technology that superimposes graphical information over a real-world environment, whether it be through a smartphone screen or visually projected onto the environment. Though it has existed in various forms for decades, augmented reality development is still widely considered the work of experts in technology-related fields.
In November 2019, however, Adobe unveiled a new augmented reality development platform, Project Aero, along with boasts that the app’s intuitive design and integration with other Adobe programs would place AR creation into …

Beyond Interventions: A Case Study Of The Denver Art Museum’S Native Arts Artist-In-Residency Program, Madison Sussmann
Beyond Interventions: A Case Study Of The Denver Art Museum’S Native Arts Artist-In-Residency Program, Madison Sussmann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Denver Art Museum’s Native Arts Artist-in-Residency Program is an inter-departmental project dedicated to the collaboration between the museum, artists, and visitors. The residency and the physical studio were established to formalize artist involvement in the museum. There is no written mission statement for the program, but visitor engagement is central to the organization of the program and experience of the artist. This thesis explores the question: What can the experiences of the artists and museum professionals involved in the Native Arts Artist-in-Residency program tell about the residency’s contribution to critical museology and decolonization? Through exploring the definitions of critical …

Exhibitions
Each spring, current LMU art students are invited to enter the Laband's annual juried student show, Young Contemporaries. In 2020, our show went virtual due to Covid-19 and all artworks were judged remotely by two professionals from Los Angeles's art world. The exhibition featured work from all the disciplines taught in LMU's art program including drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, painting, ceramics, graphic design, and new media. This exhibition—the 36th Juried Student Art Exhibition hosted by the Laband—provided an excellent first professional experience for students and celebrated our students' boundless creativity and the mentorship provided by LMU's art faculty.

Pattern Research Project: Emblems Of Colonialism - High Chest, Stephanie Wilburn
Pattern Research Project: Emblems Of Colonialism - High Chest, Stephanie Wilburn
Pattern Research Project
The Emblems of Colonialism project is a part of the broader Pattern Research Projects created by design history and design studio faculty members, Emily Smith and Dr. Sara Reed. Students in VCU Interior Design were asked to examine a pattern or motif used on a decorative object or surface during the colonial era in the Americas. During the 15th through 18th centuries, a period of colonialism forced new relationships between European countries and places in what is now known as North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. This project explores how colonial era patterns reveal power structures, othering, and the …

Senior Art Porfolio: Exploring Old Family Photos, Rhiannon Cooper
Senior Art Portfolios
This body of work is an experimentation of mixed media as well as an interpretation of my personal family history. This work has sprouted from my early childhood days when I would visit my great-grandma every week and she would show me old photos and tell me stories about them. Even today, I ask my grandparents questions about photos I find and they tell me new stories.
Color, texture, composition, and the contrast of abstraction and realism are key elements in the making of my work. The more realistic features are used to highlight what it is that I find …
Erotic Elders: Getting Freaky Over Fifty, Bruce Marlow
Erotic Elders: Getting Freaky Over Fifty, Bruce Marlow
Senior Art Portfolios
My senior art final is a booklet featuring illustrations of couples over fifty in varying scenes of sexual intimacy with comedic twists. In my eyes, sex should not be treated with such seriousness, and instead is something that should be laughed at, as it is a hilarious experience filled with pinched nerves, weird faces, and off-putting bodily noises. Learning to laugh at the things that make people uncomfortable is an important way to normalize them and allow others to talk about it without judgement or shame. With this work, I intend to poke holes in the idealized image western society …
Make And Break Details: The Architecture Of Design-Build Education, Claire Nicholas, Arlene Oak
Make And Break Details: The Architecture Of Design-Build Education, Claire Nicholas, Arlene Oak
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
In the imagination of prominent architects and architectural theorists, the detail figures as both a promising and perilous element of built form. This paper explores the tension of the “make or break” qualities of the architectural detail(s) in the learning and doing of design, through an ethnomethodologically informed ethnography of North American design-build architecture education. The discussion parses three episodes which highlight the generative qualities of the detail, in terms of its pedagogical value for architecture, and as a heuristic for the study of design practice. As both the material process of joining disparate elements, and a locus for complex …

ARTIST STATEMENT
Currently my work consists of designing characters from the ground up and slowly turning them into a form of entertainment for people to watch. My work creates happiness, joy, and a new sense of escape from everyday life. From backgrounds to small details of a storyline, I hone in on the details of the characters personalities and their emotions to keep the story and characters consistent. I use Adobe products to create the colorful images that I present to the people, but I am not afraid to get hands on with any projects and work with pencils or …
