Futile Attempts, Melissa Graveson
Futile Attempts, Melissa Graveson
The Tuxedo Archives
I don’t know why I remember waking up one morning, and getting ready to go to the mall when I was five years old. The morning started just as so many others had. I crawled out of my bed, reluctant to leave the warmth, and comfort, it provided. Soon after I made it over to the dresser, where I found an outfit to wear. The shirt and pants I put on were indicative of a child’s wardrobe. These items were not unique, or original, by any means. Having put on traditional children’s clothes I then moved onto adorning myself with …

Moving about my ways
Finding problems, new goals, and even battles,
But finding a way for success!
Feelings change constantly like hours of the day.

a joy I can’t express.
I’m at a loss for words

I get to his office tired. My prefect dark ringlet curls dripping wet from the rain. I start to his office not paying attention to the fact that his secretary is trying to stop me.
“Miss Brown,” his secretary is saying, “he is on a conference call right now. If you wait I can let him know you are here.”
“I don’t have time to wait David.”
“Miss Brown,” he shouts at me, but I am already at the door to Joe’s office.
As I walk in, I swallow hard.
“So we are going to build this building in stages,” …

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Lynne Hall, an occupational therapist, educator, and quilter based in Kalamazoo, MI, provided the cover art for the Winter 2020 issue of The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy (OJOT). “Four Patch Posy” is a 45” x 55” quilt made from cotton. In her 50th year of occupational therapy practice, Lynne’s philosophy is rooted in lifelong learning and service to others. The quilt aesthetic provides Lynne a creative medium to serve in her community. With her person-centered approach, Lynne facilitates human potential in the clients, students, and community members she serves. Success in both occupational therapy practice and quilting require a …

Along the coast of Peru is one of the driest deserts in the world. Here, under the sand, the ancient Peruvians buried their dead wrapped in gorgeous textiles. As organic material keeps almost forever when stored without humidity, light and oxygen, many of the mummies excavated in the last hundred years are in excellent conditions. And so are the textiles wrapped around them. Their clear colors are still dazzling and the textile fibers in good condition. Textiles were highly valued objects in ancient Peru – used for expressing status and diverse messages in these non-literate but highly organized and very …
Assessing Undergraduate Fashion History Research Via Content Analysis, Justine De Young
Assessing Undergraduate Fashion History Research Via Content Analysis, Justine De Young
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
Undergraduate art history students are often asked to write research essays on specific artworks, but that research is rarely considered publishable or reliable. This article analyzes undergraduate student essays on fashion history to determine whether the research produced can be considered reliable according to generally accepted art historical standards. It employs content analysis to make those determinations in addition to the instructor's own standards and those governing the Fashion History Timeline, an open-access hub of fashion history research. The article investigates the impact of a multi-stage writing and revision process on student writing outcomes and on student grades. Finally, it …
Understanding The Student Perspective Of Art History Survey Course Outcomes Through Game Development, Joshua Yavelberg, Kelly Donahue-Wallace
Understanding The Student Perspective Of Art History Survey Course Outcomes Through Game Development, Joshua Yavelberg, Kelly Donahue-Wallace
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
This heuristic, design-based research study examines student perceptions of their learning experience in the art history survey course as manifested through a game design process. With the purpose of improving upon the lecture model of the standard art history survey, two sections of a capstone class of interdisciplinary art and design students—who had all taken the survey as part of their degree programs—selected learning objectives and designed games to accompany the introductory class. The researchers used the game design process to understand first how students perceived the survey class, its learning objectives, and the students’ experiences. Then the investigation addressed …
Turning And Turning, Nicola Stephanie
Turning And Turning, Nicola Stephanie
Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores Nicola Stephanie’s works in painted and shaped canvas, which investigate sensation and visual awareness of motion. Inspired partly by clothing forms, her vocabulary of color, shape and surface articulates a sense of the body and its boundaries. These spatial drawings evoke perceptions of gravity, rotation and orientation.

Hey Boo, I’Ve Been Lonely. What’S Good With You?, Khari Johnson-Ricks
Theses and Dissertations
I explore the interlacing macro and micro implications of capitalism on interpersonal relationships. In an attempt to reconcile that problem I use storytelling, painting, and performance to imagine radical futures when love safety and abundance are easier to access.
Will Wonders Never Cease: Jess’S Translations, 1959-1976, Lily Goldberg
Will Wonders Never Cease: Jess’S Translations, 1959-1976, Lily Goldberg
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines Jess’s series of Translations paintings (1959-1976). It argues that, in subject matter, painterly technique, and conceptual approach, the works are shrewdly self-referential and grapple with many of the primary concerns of postwar American art, questions of appropriation, authorship, figuration versus abstraction, and selfhood and identity.

Feminism And The Staged Uncanny, Jessica C. Mensch
Feminism And The Staged Uncanny, Jessica C. Mensch
Theses and Dissertations
In my Thesis, I work towards a new definition of the uncanny and show the transformation of its sense in the modern period. I will then show how this transformed sense appears in the media of mechanical reproduction—stage theatrics, photography and film—and, then, specifically in my art practice.

The Potency Of Emptiness, Kennedy L. Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
I investigate language and neurology by integrating intangible personal experiences with painted manifestations of rupture within structures. I utilize a hyperbolic translation of white and black to investigate the dismantling of a structure as an explicit quotation of space, matter, existence, and mind.

Through painting I seek to claim the gutter-line experience of non-location, articulating feelings that have migrated and keep on migrating. This paper describes my own looking for the presence of something that titillates and invites curious attention but always remains partially obscure.

This book documents the paintings and drawings executed by Louis Agassiz Fuertes during the Field Museum of Natural History’s seven-month expedition to Ethiopia (Abyssinia) in 1926–27. He also executed 34 pencil drawings, which illustrate 13 species of mammals and 11 species of birds, plus numerous miscellaneous sketches and small watercolors. This book identifies and describes the biology of all 69 species of birds and mammals illustrated by Fuertes and includes 32 color reproductions of Fuertes’s watercolors that were published as a …
Excavating A Future Vision Past: Mike Davis’ City Of Quartz, William Blick
Excavating A Future Vision Past: Mike Davis’ City Of Quartz, William Blick
Publications and Research
When Mike Davis published City of Quartz in 1990, his work was widely praised by many and dismissed as liberalist hysteria by others. The reflections it contains on architectural design as a reflection of sociopolitical tumult still strike chords today. This article sets out a reexamination of the text through hindsight, using contemporary and subsequent reviews to consider how the book was relevant at the time of its publication, how it may be relevant today and how it has had a profound impact on sociological and cultural studies.
